DD (15) has a patch of really dark hair on the back of her right hand. It's become pretty prominent since she went through puberty, and she's self-conscious about it. She's used depilatories to get rid of it temporarily in the past, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for how to best have it removed permanently. I'm off to google it, but thought I'd check here too to take advantage of the Peas' all-encompassing knowledge.

I would take her to get the laser done. Laser is so much cheaper than it was 20 years ago, especially for a small area. Good luck!

It's such a small area (as opposed to getting full legs done, etc.), but it is where everyone can see it, so I don't blame her for wanting to get it removed.

I don't know about the laser hair removal but I would like to know more as my DD (20) has shown interest in it too.
Hope you get good info.

It could be a sign of a hormonal imbalance. I had that, and once my gyn put me on medication, I didn't have to wax my eyebrows and hairs above my lip every two weeks.
I had no idea that periods weren't supposed to hurt.
I've never had permanent hair removal, but the women I've talked to that had it said that it was worth it--it works best on dark hairs. My hair wasn't dark, so I wasn't a good candidate anyway.
I use the Oil of Olay depilatory kit. Everything else made me break out--even the "sensitive" wax at Aveda. I use a q tip to put it under my eyebrows, and it works extremely well. I have little hairs all around my eyebrows. They are really light coloured and difficult to tweeze until they get dark and hairy overnight. I also have a scar on one eyelid where the wax burnt me.
If the Oil of Olay didn't work so well, I would get permanent removal as well.
The local coupon mailers I get in the mail always have deals on the ads by different cosmetic surgeons and spas. I also see them in the free local magazines that I see at doctor's offices, etc.

This is something I'm going to look into for my 18 yo dd. She gets a couple of small warts on her shin on one leg and the dermatologist told her to not shave or wax (because it may cause them to spread). She uses Nair but I worry about that weekly chemical overload on her legs. Plus it makes that whole end of the house stink.

I'm currently waiting for my 6th and final pre purchased underarm laser treatment. It's worked really well getting rid of almost all the hair. It's not a permanent solution but has made it so thin and sparse that I have very little to shave. Prior to this, even shaving left a dark shadow on my underarms. I'll probably have some maintenance done in the future when more grows back. I think if you keep it up, eventually it becomes permanent. Cost was $99 for 6 sessions through a groupon at a new spa.

I had laser on my underarms about 5 years ago - love it. I need to have it again because 6 sessions wasn't quite enough to eliminate it, but it really slowed the growth and made it so when I do shave, you can't still see a dark patch (light skin and dark hair). Highly recommend laser. It does have to be done over the course of maybe 6 - 12 months, so in the mean time she could wax (make sure that won't interfere with laser, for mine I had to shave the day before going in). I'll be doing another round soon.

Don't wax while doing laser. The laser needs to zap the hair to kill the root of the hair. Shaving prior makes it less painful and doesn't waste the heat/energy burning the hair outside the skin.
