The sixth grade list includes: 8 two pocket folders - with vertical pockets - assorted colors "vertical pockets" What on earth are they describing? I'm all too familiar with THIS kind of folder because I get a dozen every year. Yes, I get that the paper is vertical, but the pockets themselves are horizontal. But now it sounds to me like they're looking for a different kind. Can you think of another kind? What do you think? I'll get the usual ones unless you can show me some other kind of "vertical pocket" folder. Exasperating.

Does anyone remember PeeChee folders? The peach colored folders with different sports players on them. They had vertical pockets. That's all I can think of.

back in the day trapper keeper folders had a slanted vertical pocket. Could that be what they mean?

Vertical pocket folders are exactly like the kind you have been buying, but instead of the pockets going horizontally across the bottom, the pockets run up and down along the vertical edges. They shouldn't be too hard to find.

Okay! So the Peas taught me something new! I guess he wants MEAD/Trapper Keepers. You know, I've never even looked at these. I've always walked right past them because they never fit the budget! Thanks everyone!

Why would a teacher care about the orientation of the pockets? School supply lists drive me batty!

When I was at Walmart last week, they had folders with both kinds of pockets...in the same folder. It was crazy! A vertical and a horizontal pocket on each side.

Why would a teacher care about the orientation of the pockets? School supply lists drive me batty! I'm a teacher, but I don't require this. My best guess is that maybe it is better for the papers? I honestly have no idea.

Staples should have these in your area for around $2.50 each. HTH

I honestly have no idea. Who knew papers were so sensitive. I feel badly for mistreating them all these years in horizontal pockets! Glad the OP solved her mystery. I wish I would have thought to ask the peas my school supply list conundrum. I finally gave up looking for 10 tab dividers - I found 5, 8 and 12 but none of the requested 10. Two stores later, I bought two 5s and called it good. My daughter is convinced her history teacher will be horrified.

Thanks everyone! No, I don't think that's what he wants. He wants folders where the pockets go up and down- rather than horizontally. Look at the picture here on this link vertical pocket on the right, horizontal pocket on the left

Vertical pockets keep the papers from falling out of the top of the folders. This is handy if the teacher takes the whole folder home for grading and for when you accidentally pick up your binder upside down.

My daughter is convinced her history teacher will be horrified. I sometimes wonder if the teachers update their lists when different items start appearing or disappearing. It is like the box of 8 (or hell 16) crayons. They are hard to find and two to three times (if not more) the price of a box of 24. I get it. The 24 box doesn't fit as well, the kids only need the colors in the 8 pack and the others are distracting, there isn't storage room... seems to me this is an area where the teacher can figure something out for the parents. 10 tab dividers are another one. A quick search on Amazon brings up a couple by Avery and one by Basicz. The tabs are smaller and go all the way down a page. I think a middle/high school student should be able to figure out which tab is which even if they repeat once.

I just bought 2 packs of 5 dividers. It didn't occur to me to look for a pack 10.

I bought my DD's folders as soon as Target put them out. Every single year they run out of them so I get them as early as I can.

Those folders would hold papers in a bit better!
I just got DD's first supply list and it was very boring and the first thing I thought to myself was, "I won't have anything to contribute to the annual pea thread about obscure school supplies!" I was really bummed out!

The only thing weird on ours was they were very specific about the brand of headphones they wanted for computer lab. Never seen folders like that..good luck!

I would call the school/teacher and ask for clarification before spending a bunch of money on possibly the wrong kind of folders.

My son is a junior in high school, so other than 5 spiral notebooks, 6 folders with prongs (no specification about orientation), mechanical pencils (his preference), and he likes the G2 pens...nothing of note. So I spent a whopping $7 on school supplies.
He's had the same Land's End bookbag for 6 years, had to send it back to have the zipper fixed one time, but otherwise, it has held up great. Last year, he needed that expensive TI calculator, but it will last through high school calculus class.
Guess I have nothing to contribute.

I've got one in high school, beyond having to buy a couple of required summer reading books, I don't have to buy anything else. We have a couple of unused notebooks from last year, about 4 different backpacks from years past to chose from and extra left over pens and paper. This momma isn't buying a darn thing. lol

I went to buy my DD's first school supplies. Kills me. Anyway, I knew enough to buy the Ticonderoga pencils, even if they were more expensive, so thanks, Peas!!

Similar to the crayon count, my stumbling block has been 8 ct Crayola Markers. Has to be Crayola (brand specific is killing me this year!). They sell 10 ct at Target. In Target brand they sell 8 ct but since I need 4 packs (yeah, don't get me started on that) Target is all sold out. I have finally resolved that I am going to get the 10 count and remove the pink and gray markers that cause the teachers distress
