I have a bunch of metal cabinets and bookcases in my classroom. I'd like to paint them so they look nicer. I'm limited in what I can do - I can't really take them outside so I don't think spray paint is an option.
im assuming they would need to be lightly sanded. Maybe primed? Any suggestions for methods that are fairly quick and easy and could be done inside the classroom before summer break?

I was going to suggest spray paint.
I don't know how well regular paint would work.

I think you can get metal paint in cans to apply with a brush. I think I have seen Rustoleum in cans.
Also, you could set up a spray tent with drop cloths, but then you need a good ventilator mask.
Or empty them, take them outside and spray. Clean and organize as you put them away.

Put cardboard on the floor and use larger pieces of cardboard (from a fridge? ) to make a 3 sided area and then be careful when spray painting. You may need to spray primer on frist.

An alternative to painting would be covering them in contact paper, fabric or decoupage. There are some cute ideas on Pinterest - and some look good even if you only do the cabinet and not the drawers, or vice versa.

I have spray painted metal file cabinets & furniture before. Cleaned them with a TSP solution and very lightly sand, place on cardboard and spray light layers. Many light layers will given you a nice even finish and minimize overspray. If you can't move them outside, set up a drop cloth (old sheets are perfect) tent and open the windows.
Buy a spray paint nozzle grip along with the paint (about $5). I have never painted a primer first.

There is something called magnetic paint that only adheres to metal, or so I have been told. You can use it inside.
