My next-door-neighbour's daughter and her family are visiting from Belgium at the moment. She called me this afternoon to say that they had tickets for the badminton at the Commonwealth Games today that they weren't going to be able to use, and was I interested in them? DS was nodding vigorously, so I told her that I was. Just as I was about to thank her for her generosity, she interrupted me to say that she had paid £50 for two tickets, and she would like me to pay for them! I kind of stammered that I wasn't sure, and she suggested that DS should come over for them, and we could discuss payment later.
DS went over - I was still speechless - and she urged him to make me pay the full cover price, as it wasn't a huge amount of money. (Big enough, when it wasn't budgeted and it's two days before payday!) When he reported this to me, I just took the tickets back and said that tonight wasn't going to work for me after all.
If she hadn't demanded the full price, I would probably have offered her £20-25. (These are fairly wealthy people.) I still can't get over her cheek!

When I have tickets I can't use and I offer them up, I don't expect payment at all. I hope nobody buys them from her.

Tacky. I'd have returned them too. The least she should have done was immediately mention how she was looking to sell them. Instead she kind of implied she was giving them away. Sneaky and tacky.

I agree with freecharlie, but beyond that, if I were going to charge for them, I would make it very clear up front. Before the other person commits! You did the right thing returning them. Bet she ended up getting nothing for them.

Bet she ended up getting nothing for them. Exactly, there a difference in selling and gifting something and it should be made upfront so there is no confusion. I'm sorry she did that.

That is pretty sucky. She should have said that she was trying to sell them first off.

The way she asked if you were interested before telling you she wanted you to pay for them was a little underhanded, IMO.

A. She should have asked up front if you were interested in buying the tickets.
B. Whether she is wealthy or not has no bearing on the value of the tickets if she wants to sell them.

You did the right thing! It's almost as if she tricked you.

You handled that very smoothly. She should have given you the tickets.

I agree that you did the right thing. I can't believe she wasn't upfront about wanting to sell them.

Wow, that was cheeky. She should have said that she wanted to sell them first. I hope she was stuck with them.

I agree that she should have made it clear from the beginning that she expected payment for them. But asking full price is not tacky. We self football tickets here all the time and people are glad to get them at face value.... I would say it would be tacky if she ask more than face value.

She should have been clear from the start. By adding the price after you said yes, it put you in an awkward position. You were right in returning the tickets.

Oh dear. It would have been much nicer if she had thought to mention *selling* the tickets to you right at the beginning. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you to go.

Okay, I totally thought the thread was going to be "she offered me tickets but they were for badminton." I didn't know that it was really a "go see it played" kind of sport elsewhere in the world! Another thing I've learned from the Peas.

That was a really cruddy thing she did to you. I'm glad you returned the tickets and didn't allow her to take advantage.

I'm glad you handed them back and aren't out the cash for them.

DS went over - I was still speechless - and she urged him to make me pay the full cover price, as it wasn't a huge amount of money. And I think this is even worse, involving your son this way. I hope he wasn't too disappointed.

That's terrible. The first words out of her mouth should have been, "I have tickets and was wondering if you would be interested in buying them"

Agree totally - she should have just given you the tickets. You certainly don't put people on the spot like that.
