Anyone familiar with it? I'm looking for a better camera than I currently have (which is an old Canon Powershot that does do pretty decent photos). I'm a bit picky because I used to use a high quality SLR then never found a dSLR I loved.
My logic thus far:
My main need is to be able to take some better shots of DS in the gym (gymnastics). So I need a good zoom that doesn't particularly get pixelated too terribly.
Everything I see recommends an equivalent of a 400mm zoom/f2.8. This is not a cheap lens for a dSLR. This particular camera has a fixed Leica lens that goes up to this zoom.
I do like that although it's bigger than what I have, it is still more portable than a dSLR and a few lenses.
I don't have a ton of money to spend - in fact, this is a little over my ideal price point, but I can make it work. (In general, prices on this seem to range from about $650-$700.)
Reviews all seem pretty good, but of course, are not from people I "know."
I'm wondering if this is (a) really as good as reviews indicate, and if (b) I'll be sorry I didn't hold out for a lot longer to get a dSLR or something.
Any input is helpful!

Would you have any interest in used? B & H has one listed, along with several others in this category. I have ordered most of my equipment used from B&H or Adorama. Read the description carefully and check the condition listing. I have never been burned. In fact, a few of the things I have ordered "used" were actually new and had never been out of the box. Double check - but for most items you have a 90 day return warranty. I didn't check to see if Adorama had any. I see that B&H is closed for Passover - but I have found if you find something you want in the used section of either store - buy it. If you go back later, it will already be sold. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Panasonic+Lumix&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&usedSearch=1&Top+Nav-Search=

Check the reviews on dpreview.com. I would expect this camera to give you what you want. It does amaze me that the new high end point and shoots can now match what is available in the dslr world for thousands of dollars more. Don't miss today's photo ops for a dslr "some day" The base line dslr is going to be $700 then you'll need another $5000 in lenses. Go for the high end point and shoot. Take good photos today!

I have been reading reviews and seeing sample photos, and it seemed like it would be perfectly good for my needs, but... It's good to hear someone else say it! I told DH that I'm going to pull the trigger on one of the used ones - that way I can still justify the extra battery and extra memory card I like to have, plus a tripod. (I used to have a really nice one and got rid of it in a closet purging session - now I'd love it!)

I have an older LUMIX and their optics are amazing. They don't make a bad camera in the lumix line.
