My hubby and I are planning a trip to see my family (in Michigan) next summer and are planning to stop 1 night in Niagara. I'm a planner and gathering info nice and early. I've been to Niagara Falls a couple of times but never as an adult. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel on the Canadian side. I'd love to have something near the falls but also don't want to break the bank, IYKWIM. Also, dh said he went to the Ripley's museum when he was a kid so we're going to do that. If you could only do a couple of things, what would you do?

We stayed at the Marriot right on the falls and loved it!
You must do the Maid of the Mist if you do nothing else.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn a few years ago with friends. It was just a short walk to the falls and a good location overall (and a good deal!)

We ate at this restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was one of the best meals we've ever had. Treadwell

We stayed at the Doubletree a few blocks away from the Falls last week. Nice hotel for a reasonable price. I'll definitely stay there again.

If it was just dh and I, we would stay as close to the Falls as possible. When we went with the kids about 15 years ago, we stayed at something like a Comfort Inn (can't remember exactly) and did all the kitchy touristy stuff like Ripley's and the wax museum and the funhouse, etc. They loved doing all the stuff that in so many other locations we would've said "no" and they still talk about it to this day (as adults).

In 2010, we stayed on the 33rd floor of the Embassy Suites, (falls side). It was absolutely incredible! I would stay there again in a heart beat. Amazing!
As for what not to miss on a one day trip:
Maid of the Mist and Journey Behind the Falls (you get up right next to the Falls about half way down. It was awesome!)

There's a nice butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls. And a botanical gardens right on the same site. You could go to Queenston to see a site from the battle of 1812; it's really just a nice open big green space now with a big old tower. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a very pretty little town although quite touristy. There are lots of wineries in the area that you could stop in at for a tasting, shopping, or a winery tour. PS -- it is spelled Niagara.

Last weekend we stayed at the Courtyard Niagara Falls. It was relatively cheap $130.00CDN, very clean, am indoor and outdoor pool, nice fitness room, arcade and the Keg restaurant on site. It was a 5 minute walk (pushing a wheelchair) to Clifton Hill and Casino Niagara.
I would recommend the butterfly conservatory and botanical gardens attached. We also really liked the Sky Wheel. A slow moving fully enclosed ferris wheel in the middle of Clifton Hill. We did it twice, once during the day and once at night. Even my mom in a wheel chair loved it. Maid of the Mist - now called Hornblower Niagara Cruises is also a must do. My family also thinks a trip to the Hershey store at the bottom of the hill by the Casino is also a must do
For breakfast I would recommend the Flying Saucer on Lundy's Lane. We ate at TGIF's and the Outback this time. They were ok, typical chain food and tourist area prices. I would recommend Mama Mia's for Italian food and if you just want really good pizza try Franks. My dh grew up there and really misses the pizza.

For my 50th birthday last November, my mom, sis and I went to the Falls for an overnight and stayed at the Sheraton on the Falls. It was pricier than some of the more modest motels and hotels but totally worth the money for the view alone. We had a room overlooking the American Falls, and could also see the Canadian Falls.
I've been to Niagara countless times over the years, as we live nearby, but that was a special experience. Opening the window and looking down on the Falls and hearing the rush of water was wonderful. The Sheraton has some of their pricier corner rooms that overlook the Canadian Falls as well.
They have a buffet dining room with a spectacular view and decent food.
You can get packages that include winery tours, buses, admissions to attractions on Clifton Hill, etc. which makes the room prices more reasonable. Some include spa visits or dinners.
The number one ranked hotel there, I believe, is the Marriott Fallsview, and they have an indoor water park as well.
Dh and I plan to go for a weekend later this year or next year, and will stay at the Sheraton.
