We have long suspected ds is allergic to popcorn. He avoids it all costs now.
Last summer he had a ton of gastro issues that resulted in a lot of medical testing. None of which were for allergies.
Yesterday wr we had corn on the cob for the first time of the season. About an hour later he was having stomach issues again. Not as bad last summer or when he eats popcorn, but he could tell it was starting.
Here is the strange part though....he has ate canned corn year round with no issues. Could it be that canned corn is that overly processed that it does not make him react?
* We are getting him tested in a few weeks for allergies

I don't know about the canned corn, but I have not been able to eat corn for about 30 years. Within minutes I am in pain and in the bathroom. Also anything made with corn syrup, or high fructose corn syrup. I can eat a few chips at our favorite mexican restaurant, but can not have their rice, which has a few kernals of corn in it.
I can eat cooked apples, like pies, applesauce, etc., but don't eat raw apples, so wonder if you are on to something.
Hope he gets some answers.

They were leaning towards allergy due to the inflammation in his intestines. Does that sound right?
Can an intolerance develop into an allergy?

If it is something like diverticulitis, I would guess that the canned corn might be OK because it's softer and doesn't leave the same type of roughage in his digestive tract.
One thing of curiosity, I have read some things where it's suspected that a lot of corn allergies/sensitivities are not actually to the corn but to residues of Roundup. Although even the organic stuff is often showing some residues of it, it might be worth trying that as a test, too.

You can have food allergies that are not your typical anaphylactic reactions. My DD has several food allergies that all involve projectile vomiting after ingesting the allergen and never swelling/airway issues. We saw a peds allergist and he explained that there are different mechanisms involved in some food allergies that make them present differently. Food allergies can be difficult to skin test and processing the food can also make a difference. For example, raw banana creates a horror movie scene for DD but when she accidentally ate a processed applesauce that had banana hiding in it... Amazingly no issue. Corn is a big trigger for diverticulitis & diverticulosis, but it is a mechanical irritant in the colon, so that seems pretty quick to trigger that sort of a reaction if that were the case.

I have a corn intolerance. Thw pain and stomach issues I have after eating it are pretty nasty. I have never tried creamed corn. I can't eat popcorn, corn on the cob, corn relish, cornmeal, tacos or tortillas. So I wouldn't even dare try creamed corn. i just avoid any corn based product. I used to like it and it didn't want to be friends with my stomach, but now I would say it seriously hates me.

I am allergic to corn..but the cooked corn doesn't bother me. corn on the cob..will swell my soft tissues and I can't stand to walk by the grocery store bin if people are stripping the husks..the particles in the air will start me sneezing and my sinuses swell...so allergic reactions can be all over.

My stomach does not like corn on the cob, but handles canned corn just fine. It also doesn't like more than a handful of popcorn. For me, I don't think its an allergy, just that my gut doesn't like it. My gut also doesn't like quiche (though it likes all of the ingredients just fine) and it doesn't like beans.

You can have a food sensitivity without having an "allergy". Read up on leaky gut and hat may shed some light on the situation. Sensitivities can cause inflammation and all kinds of problems in various areas of your body. Some of the symptoms could be immediate and others could take longer to show up or be a result of the chronic inflammation.

Arielsmom--the apple allergy is a reaction to the allergens from pollen being on the raw fruit. I have a true apple allergy--cider vinegar, cooked apples, baked goods containing applesauce... You can have an allergy that isn't life threatening. My apple allergy causes my sinuses to swell. Continuing to eat apples COULD cause my allergy to become life threatening. I'm anaphylactic to oranges and latex--they're in the same family, and I had a lot of nurses and doctors poo poo my latex allergy until it became life threatening. It's happened to enough people that most hospitals are now latex free. I knew someone who was allergic to corn. I never realized it was in so many foods!

Gastric distress is a symptom of anaphylaxis.

There is a difference between allergy & intolerance. My sister is corn intolerant. She can't have any sort of processed corn or corn products - corn starch, corn syrup, dextrose, etc. She can, however, eat it out of the garden.
They discovered hers by analyzing hair samples (but that's been over 30 yrs ago, don't know how they do it now).

This sounds like the reaction our DD has, too. She had extensive allergy testing at about 18 and discovered the corn allergy. She can eat one piece of corn on the cob, but not 2. And not 2 days in a row. She's also allergic to oranges, which I've never heard of before.

When I was a child I was diagnosed with a corn allergy and at the time was told I'd likely outgrown it. I still can't eat it today; it tears up my stomach. I hope the doctor can give you more advice.

I have an allergy to fresh pineapple and plums. I can eat cooked or canned pineapple with no problem. The allergist said that the cooking/processing breaks down the proteins and then the allergy doesn't impact me. (My pineapple and plum allergy is just a really itchy mouth and runny nose. I have a true anaphylaxis allergy to tree nuts.)

I knew someone who was allergic to corn. She also had to be very careful about cosmetics and other skin products because sometimes they had cornstarch in them.
