Please share this with your teens or anyone else you know might use this. Absolutely heart wrenching.
One family's heartbreak

There are more than just this one. Any chemically modified 'drugs' from the internet are not controlled and you never know what they really are. Most go by a combo of numbers and letters. Kids think the same combo is the same thing, but it's not.

I hadn't heard about this drug. Well, I'd heard about synthetic marijuana just not under that name.
What a shame that he had been in rehab for heroin use, and had been 'sober' for many months, only to die from something that he probably thought was not dangerous.

This is all over my facebook feed. I just hate that these kids think that because they can buy something at a convenience store it is safe.

This is not new and its very scary - I studied it in college a few years ago in a training class for counseling those in drug treatment programs. I was shocked at some of the things we learned - like girls soaking tampons in alcohol etc,. Scary stuff with devastating results.

My DD is a student at LU and is so very saddened by this......I wish he could have gotten the help he needed to fulfill whatever was missing. RIP Connor.....
eta: and this sentence makes me so very sad "A propensity toward addiction also emerged in their son, whose biological mother apparently had not remained sober during pregnancy." ...with tears running down my face......dear Jesus, hold Connor tight in your arms now that he is with You. No more tears, no more pain.....

How awful. And sadly, it isn't new. My oldest son was telling me about friends who used it a few years ago.
I learned about this from Law & Order:SVU, believe it or not.

I sat here and cried reading this article. I am so sad for this family. That is how it affected me. The part of his mom getting his 19-year old footprint almost did me in.

My boys are 22 and 24. Even though they are grown, I still worry so much about something happening to them from a dumb choice.

My boys are 22 and 24. Even though they are grown, I still worry so much about something happening to them from a dumb choice. My DS is 28. We have always been extremely lucky with his choices. He was in high school marching band and ran with the high achievers who weren't into drinking or using drugs. He has maintained those friendships now in his adult life. They drink but haven't ever dabbled in drugs. We thank our lucky stars every day. I pray for families who deal with addiction. I can't fathom how hard it is. 30+ years ago I had a friend whose brother was a young dentist from a wonderful family and he died from getting bad cocaine the night before he was going into rehab. It was quite a shock to us as we had no clue. The conjecture was that perhaps his supplier was afraid he would give him up.

Interesting thing happened today.... I asked my 16 year old if he had ever heard of Spice/K2/whatever and he was looking at me like I had a third eye on my forehead. He said "you mean like cilantro?" I guess I didn't explain my question well enough because he then made the *mooooooootherrrrrrr* face and said something about smoking oregano. Not three minutes later he sat up, looked at me and said "you aren't going to believe this." Apparently, his girlfriend had texted him an article about two teenagers from her family's hometown that had been hospitalized this week for having issues with smoking this stuff. And BOOM. Mom is smart again and we had an interesting discussion about smoking weed.

DH is the Commander of the Air Force Drug Testing Lab, so we talk about drugs a lot at our house. He was explaining to me why Spice was so much worse than pot because of the way the synthetic THC reacts with your body chemistry. Unlike Marijuana that has other components that mellows the affect, Spice is unpredictable. It's 5th generation stuff that is on the streets right now. So that's how many times the makers have changed the formulation, to keep ahead of the laws.

Thanks for sharing! I immediately talked to both my kids about this (19 and 15) and they had both heard of Spice...apparently a lot of younger kids are trying it too

I saw this on FB the other night and it made me cry. I can't imagine what that family is going through.
I always tried to impress on my sons that just trying drugs once can either hook them for life or kill them. I am very thankful that they made better choices and never experimented with drugs. I had to watch two of my brothers destroy their lives because of drugs, so I was determined to try to sway my sons the other way.
My heart aches for that family, and so many others.

We have a major problem with Spice here where I live. It has become very popular with kids even in middle school.

As a nursing student, I had a patient in the psych unit that had smoked this she was extremely incoherent and at 21 was not able to care for herself. She could not even do basic hygiene. That was a rough day for me.

Ugh Just came back to finish the article, I need to talk to DS18 about it and see if he's heard about it.
I do talk to my kids a lot about addiction. Both sides of the family have a history of addiction. Alcohol, drugs and gambling. I stress to them, don't even try anything once. Since we have a family history of it, they are more likely to become addicted.
Heck when DS18 had his wisdom teeth pulled they gave him percocet. He took it once. His resting heart rate is normally 45- 50 because he's a runner. The perc dropped it to 37, he has never been so scared in his life. He refused to take it after that. He stuck with Advil, and he even hates taking that.

I took the time to talk to my three tonight about it. Mostly because I wanted DS to hear it......he's at the age where kids do things without realizing the possible consequences....
