That is what my sister asked me yesterday! She sent me this fb message: what should I do with my pictures? I have all these albums that take up soooo much room. How can I just condense them and keep them safe at same time? are those cute picture boxes ok? Here I am trying to get my photos out of those boxes and scrapbooked and she wants take them out of photo albums and put them into boxes! She said she had 12 or 13 albums and they take up too much space. I just don't get it! Julie

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw your thread! I used to have all of my photos organized in magnetic albums. If I had thought about it, I would have put the pics in page protectors and left the albums until I got them scrapped.
Now I have boxes of photos I can't even enjoy looking at.
Now my mother has always kept hers well organized in boxes. Each pack of photos has a tab with the subject and date and they are stored chronologically. It can be done I guess as long as you don't really want to sit down and look at them.
I have so many scrapbooks that completed albums are on my bedroom floor. I have no place to put them. I probably have close to 100.

Are they scrapbook albums or photo albums? I can see her point if they are scrapbook albums that are bulky. People lose interest in hobbies and want to claim their space back.

I would think no one would ever look at them if they were taken out of the albums and put into boxes, and if no one is ever going to look at them why bother keeping them at all? Just saying.

What about getting them scanned so she can at least view them easily and reprint if desired?

she could always remove them from the 'crafty' artsy pages and fit them into the divided page protectors; that way she would have (6) 4x6 photos per page, which would cut down on the album space she would need. I agree that it does sound strange, but if she doesn't like having all the albums there due to space, then putting them in divided page protectors will at least allow someone to still look at the photos easier than if they were put into boxes.
Odd as it might sound to us scrappers, I do think if that's what she wants to do, then she should do it... they're her photos, after all. (except for perhaps labeling the photos with who is in them and a little detail about the activity / timeframe.) <--- this whole process of removing them from the albums still sounds pretty involved to me, though.

If she can scan or photograph the pages, then she can make them into photobooks, which are much thinner. Then at least they could still be enjoyed. That is one thing I am considering doing, but more for sharing with my kids. I did a family album for each year. A digital cooy would let the kids decide if they want to use them to make their own custom photo books, with their pages and selected family pages.

If they were left out on a shelf, my family would grab boxes and look through them. However, they probably wouldn't get put back in my carefully curated order, which would drive me nuts.
