If you watch MSNBC’s Morning Joe, you know that Joe has been predicting Trump’s success for some time. I evidently didn’t tune in soon enough, so I didn’t know why.
The other day I visited Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) blog – haven’t been there in a while, and discovered that Scott (who endorsed Obama in 2008) was explaining Trumps actions and why they were successful in a most helpful way.
It seems that Scott is a student of Persuasive Techniques. I capitalized it because he has studied this type of behavior extensively and just wrote a book on the topic. He says he doesn’t necessarily agree with Trumps views but he finds his mastery of these techniques absolutely fascinating. To get a taste of what I am talking about, last August, Scott said the following:
I know many of you hate Trump with the fervor of a thousand burning suns (and I haven’t been a fan) but if you take a step back and look at him through this lens, you might find it as interesting as I do. He says Trump is playing 3D chess against 2D opponents.
Here is a link to the current entry. blog.dilbert.com/ If you want to go back to when he first started writing about Trump and work your way forward, you would want to go here. Clown Genius
I’m still working my way through his entries, but I thought some of you might be interested in taking a look at Trump from another perspective as well.

very interesting. I am going to have to go and read through that when I have a chance. I do agree that the politicians and media who cover them just can't comprehend why Trump is "successful" and if anything are covering him totally wrong if their goal is to knock him out. They can't seem to move outside the mindset of what they know/want to believe. I am not a huge Trump supporter, but tend to be more systems vs goal oriented perspective, so he doesn't seem as crazy to me as to some.

One of the things he talks about are what he terms Linguistic Kill Shots. When he said that Jeb Bush was "low energy" that was it for Jeb. Because he made a connection in your brain with Jeb's physical characteristics and his label:
One of his linguistic kill shots was to label Clinton as lacking stamina.
I don't know about you, but the whole political season just got a lot more interesting for me with this new view of the terrain.

I think that is giving trump more credit than he actually deserves. Maybe I need to read more but I don't see how trump is a systems thinker. The ideas that he has seem to be very simple, not thought out and don't take all parts of the "system" into consideration.

I think I'm to the point where I want Trump to run against Clinton for president. I'm ready for the Republican party to implode and start over.

I don't really care if there's some insidious method to his madness. He's still a disgusting clod of a human being and I think he'll blow up the world in the end, if we give him the access he seeks.
I see no reason to reward his horrifying behavior and I really cannot understand how anyone would think he'd make a successful president.

The fool comes to California which happens to have a huge Hispanic population. He gives a "speech" in LA. He starts going on about the high crime rate in LA then he mumbles oh yea we are building the wall.
It does not take a rocket scientist to understand what he meant. It is totally irresponsible for a presidential candidate to suggest that the reason for the high crime rate is due to undocumented folks. And when he builds his wall everything will be better. That is simplistic view on a complex problem. Actually two complexed problems crime in general and immigration.
Unfortunately there are bigger fools who buy into his garbage.
He has achieved his "success" by exploiting the fears of some people. That type of "success" is not the kind one should be proud of or admired by others.

Very interesting! I am a consultant who deals with politicians. We try to help them think and act in a more businesslike way when compiling budgets and so on. I fear the politician who has all the typical political "me first/ after me the storm" stuff down. I fear the business person who has the same business-grounded skills as his first port of call. Combine those into someone with Trump's particular brand of crazy, including the absolute conviction that he is always right, even in fields where he has absolutely no experience and that is someone to truly fear.
ETA: as a person on the spectrum who detests labeling persons with mental challenges of any kind, I usually avoid the word crazy. Not this time.

I find the psychology behind events fascinating, so thanks for that link. There's been something about this whole Donald Trump show that seems off to me (I've watched passively rather than feeling engaged either for or against), and this might just help me put my finger on it.

I heard on the news this morning that after the big demonstrations, after he had to (apparently) jump a fence and come in the back the way to get his podium, Mr. Trump say something to the effect of 'he felt like he was sneaking across the border/wall.' Pretty darn inflammatory if you ask me.

Pretty darn inflammatory if you ask me. On the local news they showed videos of Trump getting out his car and scrambling to get across a grassy hill to get to the back entrance. I thought it was pretty funny. To bad the protestors didn't have that spot covered.

he had to pull to the side of the freeway, go around some highway barriers..go though a fence, and then cross the old bayshore hiway to go to the back entrance of the hotel-- he left via the same route. the motorcade was parked on the side of hiway 101..just south of the airport. it is not a way that anyone but the CHP would authorize...

I have noticed the phenomena of linguistic kill shots. Not just Low Energy Jeb, but also Lyin' Ted, and Cheatin' Hilary. But I viewed these more as middle school taunts, rather than linguistic kill shots.
