How do you keep your cell phone dry and sand free at the beach or on a boat? I rarely do either but we're going on vacation where we will be at the beach and going kayaking and I don't know what to do with my phone. Not bring it at all? Leave it in the car? Is there a container or contraption where I can bring it and it will be safe if I fall out of the kayak and into the ocean?

I put it in a ziplock bag for either. I can still use it for everything but photos/calls.

There are waterproof bags, look in your cellphone accessory aisle at Target/Walmart, etc. Normally though, I just bring sandwich size bags to the beach to keep our phones in them, mainly to keep sand out.

I double Baggie mine at the beach. Going kayaking I probably wouldn't take it.

As a coastal Floridian, I will tell you that I've been lucky so far by keeping my phone in a ziploc bag except for when I need to use it. DH has been bugging me to break down & get a Lifeproof case AND a Lifeproof life jacket (that allows them to float in water). So far I haven't. We have a dry box (large tupperware container) that we use on the boat, so it goes in there while we're boating. Sometimes I pull it out to take pix, but then I put it right back in. Of course, when we cruised and stopped in Haiti, I decided that I HAD TO HAVE a photo of the mountains from my vantage point floating in the water. I popped my phone into a waterproof bag (one specially meant for phones) and paddled back out to the water. By the time I got to my spot my phone was vibrating like crazy. Within 1/2 hr it was so hot that I couldn't hold it & had to wrap it in a towel. It was frying from the inside out b/c a few drops of salt water had gotten into the "waterproof" bag. So.... I won't do that again without having every. stinking. thing. backed up (which you can't do on a cruise unless you use your laptop offline or some other combination). I'd backed up before leaving home but lost everything from the time we left home until we got to Haiti (departure from the port, photos of our pristine room, etc.). On a kayak I'd think that putting it in a small tupperware container that seals tightly and would float long enough for you to get to it would be good. Or in a very well sealed ziploc. There just is no guaranteed way, I'm sorry to report. Have a great time!!

I always take mine to the beach, but knowing me, if I were doing anything in a small boat, I would end up in the water LOL, so no, I wouldn't take it. On the beach or on a boat the size of a catamaran? I certainly would. I've never had any issues with those places. I've never put mine in anything. Never even crossed my mind. :-P

I am at the beach all the time. I keep my phone in my beach bag in a pocket. I have an as old as dirt iphone that has been to the beach for years and I have never had trouble with it getting sandy. If I think it is looking hot and bothered, I stick it in a ziplock in the pocket of the cooler (too cold is probably not good either.) On the boat it goes into a ziplock in my beach bag. I think as long as you are not digging a hole in the sand and burying it like a bone you are fine.

There are waterproof pouches. I've seen them at Walmart and at boating stores. A couple weeks ago when I went kayaking, I put my phone in a ziplock and then put the ziplock in my drybag. But my phone is old and if it fell overboard and drowned it wouldn't be the end of the world. If I had a new phone, I'd get a waterproof case and probably tether it to myself.

I bought a waterproof pouch/bag at REI. They came as a set, so I have a small one I keep money and the car key in, a medium one for my phone and a larger one for my Kindle.

Lifeproof cases are pricey but worth it for peace of mind.
