Hey ladies, DH and I will be in town to observe the Ironman in a couple of weeks. Prices to stay in The Woodlands are really high that week-end so we are looking at staying farther out. We don't know the area well at all, any recommendations as to which area we stay in? Also, we will be spending all day in The Woodlands and would love some food recommendations. Great food, price not an issue. Thanks in advance eta: Especially in City Center as we will be on foot almost all day Saturday. But we will be coming into town Friday and staying through Sunday so need other area recommendations as well. We decided to stay in Conroe so if there is someplace fantastic there would love to hear about it! We we love all kinds of food except sushi and German and will be eating out at least 2 times for each meal.

I think you'll find it easier to travel from and to Conroe but the traffic will suck either way.

What about Kingwood to the east? That's on the other side of the Intercontinental Airport.... I think 99 is fully open but I might be partial toll road? It might be easier coming from the east rather than north or west? When I come into town I do some work up that way but haven't gone west from there. But I usually stay in the Galleria/Uptown area.
Just another option....

Thank you ladies! keithurbanlovinpea I'm glad you mentioned the traffic because we assumed it wouldn't be that bad on early Saturday morning except for the event area. We will leave earlier! @luvspaper I assumed the closer to Houston proper the worse the traffic will be, and I was looking for an area with more direct routes. Is that not the case?

Conroe is probably the best choice.
The Goose's Acre on The Waterway is a good restaurant to eat at.

The event area has really bad traffic that weekend because it usually coincides with Dave Matthews Band and prom.

My very favorite restaurant is Tommy Bahamas on Market Street. I think you will need reservations on the weekend of Ironman.
There is great shopping on Market Street and it's all in a walkable area.
A new area w/ a lot of good restaurants is Hughes Landing. Escalante is an upscale Mexican restaurant in that area that is very good. There are lots of other good choices in that area as well.
Black Walnut has good food and a very diverse menu. I especially like to go there for brunch.
Torchy Tacos is great for a quick casual meal.
I think Conroe is a good choice, but I'd keep checking on rooms in The Woodlands. They have built so many hotel rooms in The Woodlands in the past few years, you might find a deal at the last minute.

We've gone before for the Ironman and I remember bad traffic but not THAT bad. We tend to get there really early in the am and score great parking and just eat wherever we happen to be when we are hungry. But with Prom...reservations for dinner for sure. Thank you for the recommendations ladies, off to check out the menus!
