Good Monday morning ladies!! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Well another one bites the dust here. DD#2 woke up this morning feeling sick. This gives me zero hope at all that I'll be missed by this bug. I'm thinking that my turn will come no later than Thursday. This bug is really getting to me at this point. At this point, I think I'd almost rather get it sooner rather than later and be freaking done. Weigh in was this morning...officially down to 199.2...that's down 7.2 lbs from last week. Ugh. Totally not cool at all. And unfortunately, it looks like this week will be much the same with the bug still here. In a couple of weeks, I'll be able to celebrate being in one-derland. Right now, there is just no celebrating in me. I hope you all have a great Monday!! You can do this ladies!!

brandy327 keep the courage. When everyone is sick it can feel like life will never be normal again. I think your weight loss is fantastic and hope you'll celebrate that soon. I had a good weekend and got plenty of exercise. My challenge in the coming week will be eating carefully at a work potluck and a graduation party. I usually have self control on such occasions, it's just that sometimes there aren't many good choices. I don't want to get derailed this week. Good luck to all.

Oh brandy327, I am so sorry to hear you have another one down. Oh no. I know you are frustrated. I will be praying! I am down another 2.2 lbs. for a total loss of 24 lbs. So excited. Hoping to have another great eating and exercise week. I feel so good that I really have no desire to splurge anymore. But I also allow myself one piece of cheesecake each week and of course my ice cream each night. That keeps me happy, happy, happy. Have a great day everyone especially you Brandy!!!!!

Congrats Patter ! This is going to be a week of craziness. May always is for a teacher. This week is also teacher appreciation week. That means lots of treats to resist. I am also going to a banquet tonight as the guest of a former student. Hopefully the food choices will be so ethic I can work with. Have a great day everyone!

Patter - congrats on the weight loss tuesdaysgone - usually what I do is eat a small healthy meal before the party so I'm not starving and can take my time to make good choices. Usually I go for the veggies or salads first and then take a little of whatever looks the best...lol. Back to school for ds and back to work for me after a 4 day weekend. I did really well this weekend with eating and exercise and hope I can keep it up this week. No gym for me this morning since I knew I would need more time to get ds up and out the door. I am going to try to go after work today or at least take a long walk to get my steps in. Have a great day ladies!

Oh brandy! I am sending healthy thoughts your way. Bugs be gone!!! I am staying on track with my new "cut out the crap food" eating routine. I have developed a rather strong liking for tuna and avocado on a whole grain roll for lunch which is decidedly better than Nutella sandwiches on white bread that I may or may not have had before!!! I have also stopped eating anything after dinner which was a big challenge for me. Such a hard habit to break. Keep up all the good work healthy peas!

I hope the bug vacates your house quickly brandy327! Nothing worse then waiting to see who falls next. Last week was rough with eating. Way too much eating out and crap snacking. One positive was a did better with drinking water. I HATE water so it is really hard for me to get in enough. I drank 1 liter every day last week. I know that it isn't enough, but it is a huge start for me. Even with all of my crappy eating I did lose 1.8 lbs. I signed up for 2 dietbets that end in May. I have about 9 lbs to lose in four weeks so I have to get my butt in gear! Hope everyone has a great week.

Hello everyone. Last week I pretty much took a break off of exercising and dieting. I am back at it today! As of Friday I was down a lb but it is back today of course. The kids start baseball games today so eating healthy will be even more of a challenge. I am going to try to have things packed as well as planned as much as possible to avoid eating out and concession stands. I do usually get a few more steps in when we go to games, so at least that is good. brandy327 I hope the flu is done soon! At least there is an upside in that you lost several lbs. Patter congrats! Hey everybody! So sorry to hear the sickness is still strong at your house brandy327 - that has to be so frustrating! Busy week for me again, today I have to get errands done this morning and a bunch more baking done for the golf course for my delivery to them tomorrow. So a long day as well. I may wake DD#1 up and bring her along for company on my errands. Not much to report in the way of food & weight - weigh in day was yesterday for me, and I did keep pretty much on plan all day. The possibility of making my next mini goal of 10 more pounds is keeping me on track for sure. Happy Monday all!

I am REALLY struggling with staying on track since getting back from vacation. Not sure what's going on with me. Did "only" 4 yoga classes last week (Due to bad weather, and canceled class), and should be back to 5 this week, unless something happens. It's a busy week. I have 5 months to get back down to NO MORE THAN 140 (Yeah, I know the scale doesn't matter as much, but it's moving in the wrong direction, and I have GOT to get going back down hill) by mid- October. Let's DO this!

Interesting article on weight loss and the Biggest Loser in the NYT today. Basically, your metabolism slows after weight loss (grr) and in the case of the contestants, it is STILL significantly slower than it should be 6 years later! Crazy. So all this stuff about increasing your calories for maintenance is frankly wrong. It's been known that your metabolism slows after weight loss... don't know why I never heard that before! It explains why it is so hard to keep it off.
Good luck to those with events coming up and healthy thoughts to Brandy's household!
Hit the 9 lb mark this morning. Hoping I can hit 10 and maintain that and maybe a little more by the end of the month. Lots of travel this month. Driving 10 hours to see dd perform this weekend and then Hawaii at the end of the month!

There is still so much to learn and I have a lot of questions after reading the article. I'm wondering if the way that they lost the weight matters (creating huge calorie deficits that most people can't sustain). If the types of food they eat/macros matters? How can we naturally change leptin levels for the better? I personally think that our hormones play a bigger part in our weight than we credit them for, and the types of food we eat affects our hormones. So it isn't all about calories in vs calories out. It is much more complicated than that.

melissa I also read that article and was a little depressed. I actually wish they had discussed the effects of the rapid weight loss for the Biggest Loser contestants in the article. I do believe I have a slower metabolism than other people -- my husband and his entire family have metabolisms like jack rabbits. It is hard not to compare myself to them but I've had a lot of practice! Ha! But as depressing as the facts are, it is true I'm a slow loser and I know maintaining my weight loss is going to be even harder than losing it. I just hope that the habits I've formed over the years will help me maintain. But I don't have any other options than to try.

Thank you so much for the well wishes ladies. DD that's home today seems to have gotten the "light" version. She's only been sick once and said she doesn't feel horrible...whereas dh when he had it on Friday looked like death warmed over. OMG I have never seen the man so sick in the 20 years I've known him. She's watching movies and just laying on the couch. I'm going to have to run out at some point and buy some more wipes. I'm going to read that article here in a few mins. Thanks for the link!

I thought the article was depressing as well. However, there are a lot of people on the 5:2 site who have maintained their losses for quite awhile so I am looking to them and their successes rather than getting too down and deciding to just give up, especially when there are so many variables that haven't been explored in this article.

Thanks! I will read it shortly but since it made everyone depressed I am not sure I should rush. LOL! I lost my weight about 6 years ago, and really only gained a lot of it back last year due to my daughter's health issues. You can maintain! I know my downfall, and I paid for it dearly last year. I just have to not give into that downfall when I get so, so overwhelmed. I also quit weighing myself, and I think it's something I need to continue weekly for life so that if I creep up, I know it, and I take action and not let it get out of control like I did ignoring the issue last year. KWIM?

I don't think anyone should be surprised the Biggest Loser contestants can't keep the weight off. The show is so unrealistic. No matter where you end up weight-wise, you are not going to be able to maintain that lifestyle forever. I do wonder if the rapid weight loss contributed, but when you look at weight loss surgery patients, they have large amounts of weight loss over a short period of time (albeit not as short) and have a much higher success rate. Are they more motivated? Or, is it hormonal? I don't think there are easy answers. And I really had no clue about the decreased metabolism after weight loss of any kind. I don't understand why that is not talked about more!

I don't understand why that is not talked about more! I agree! I also try to keep this saying in mind, "Don't do anything to lose weight that you wouldn't be able to maintain in the long run." I have a friend who has lost a lot with Isagenix last month and she keeps trying to convince me to join her. She has linked to lots of success stories and it is tempting, but obviously I am not going to do that for the rest of my life. I just made the tortellini sausage skillet that someone posted last week. I didn't have to leave until later so thought I would make it now then DH and the kids can warm it up before they head to the game (I will meet them there). It is sooooo good! Has anyone found other recipes to share recently?

Losing weight that quickly isn't healthy and I have to wonder if that's the problem.
I would like to see the same researchers look at a group of non-biggest looser contestants who lost large amounts of weight and see if they have the same metabolism issues.

I'm not going to read the article- I don't want to be depressed! You can drive yourself nuts reading- I know I have. Trying to decide carbs or no carbs, how much protein, calories, etc. Exercise? I know it's all trial and error with me. Still trying to decide about all of this protein. I am starting to bloat again and I hate it! I'm wondering if I'm eating too much fruit? I have started having cottage cheese with strawberries and one other fruit (banana, mango, or apple) each morning. Not a whole banana, mango, or apple - just a few pieces. I am tired of eggs! I still try to have them 3 times a week. Anyway, I bought some Culturelle today- maybe that will help. Do most of you eat fruit everyday?

I'm having difficulty erasing the results of a 3 lb gain from a crazy roadtrip Twizzler and ice cream binge. It's been a week, and I've only lost 1 of the pounds.
This weekend, I stupidly decided to purge my freezer of my compulsively saved bananas, and made 4 loaves of banana bread. This decreased my freezer hoard by 12 bananas, but I ate at least an entire loaf all on my owneeo. I could seriously tell the sugar was affecting me because I was sleepy and lethargic. Sugar really does me no good at all.
But I did walk over an hour each on Saturday and Sunday! My legs seem firmer and smaller, I think. I'm sure I'll need to switch and try something new for exercise when it gets hot out. I have a treadmill, but tend to watch the clock when I'm on it. I just really lack confidence about any new fitness endeavor. I've never been athletic.

I know it's not completely the same because I haven't hit my goal weight, but I've maintained my loss over the course of the years. I've continued to lose and it HAS taken me 13 years to lose 150 lbs (which I figured out what my total loss was this morning)...and yes, I have had bouts where I've put 10-20 lbs back on, I've been able to somewhat easily take it back off. Regardless of what the article says (which it is most definitely discouraging), I think that weight loss IS maintainable. For me, I'm realistic to the fact that it will NEVER be easy and I'll always have to watch what I'm eating and I'll probably have to exercise til the day I die...but if that's what I need to do to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, well I guess that is what I'll have to do.

And once it gets warmer here, I won't walk outside either...actually once the bugs come out then I'll be done. LOL

Well, I'm glad I got my walk in tonight before the crazy thunderstorms that are coming through right now! My goals for May are: -get 10,000 steps minimum daily -track every darn morsel that passes my lips--dear Lord, it was not pretty today! Let's just say I got into the chocolate and the chocolate won. Sigh... -lose 20 pounds total by the end of the month. I think they're pretty realistic goals. I REALLY didn't want to get my walk in tonight. I have a standing appointment with a fellow teacher to walk Monday and Thursdays. She was concerned the thunderstorms would start during our walk so we cancelled. Drove my dd to ballet and wrestled with whether I should or shouldn't go on my own. I decided I needed to keep my commitment to my May goal and go until my fitbit buzzed signalling 10,000 steps. Got home, changed into my sneakers, grabbed my headphones and out I went. By the time I got to 10,000 steps, I was in such a good groove, I kept going. Got 2.5 miles in by the end. Less than I'd normally walk with my friend, but more than if I'd not done anything at all! Overall, I'm pleased. Now, the chocolate and I need to have a come to Jesus meeting...or maybe that's the chat I need to have with myself.
