I'll preface this by reminding you I'm English! Lol. So my pronunciation would be: Bear-ee-an Jem-ee-uh Bry (rhymes with eye) onna.

These are some student names I have a hard time pronouncing correctly. How would you pronounce them? Berean Jemia Briyonna Here is how the first one is pronounced. Leave off the "s" that makes it plural www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp3YKt4PQ3AThe second one I would pronounce Gem I ah and finally, Bri (long I) on ah

No one got the first one! This poor girl informed me today that I had been saying her name wrong all year. I said Buh-REE-un. Nope, it's Buh-RIN. Or almost b'RIN. Maybe you could have mentioned that back in September? Second one I keep calling Juh-mee-uh, but it's Juh-mye-uh. In my defense, I have about twenty girls whose names end in -mia, and they're all pronounced -mee-uh (including just Mia). And she stands near Tamia, whose name IS pronounced tuh-mee-uh. I get one or the other of them wrong at least once a week. Last one is Brye-ON-uh. Same excuse as above. Every other Brianna, Briana, Bryanna, Bre'Anna, etc. in school (and there are multitudes) pronounces the first syllable Bree. Don't get mad at me because your mom is illiterate (haha). We've got like three weeks left, girls, and you're all in the 8th grade. Better luck in high school!

And this is why one should never name their child something that people can't pronounce. <Said in my best old lady voice.> And if my parents DID give me such a name, I would certainly tell the teacher how it is pronounced in September!

The first one is from the Bible, so I have heard this word and pronunciation my entire life.
Burr-EE-un
Other peas have gotten the correct pronunciation for the other names.

OP said it is pronounced similar to Brinn. I immediately thought of Berea College - thought maybe mom or dad was an alum.

Oh dear. I thought I was pretty good at weird names with my five years of subbing, but I only got one out of three (the middle one.) I agree with you that the girls should speak up and tell you how they want their names pronounced, but politely tell. Not say it in the most exasperated voice possible and then roll her eyes at you for not reading her mother's mind. Which is totally how got corrected every time I got a name wrong.

It really doesn't matter how any of us would say these names. What matters is how each individual prefers their name to be pronounced.
I grew up in an area with a lot of unusual ethnic names. Different branches of the same family would pronounce their last name differently from the others.
Same goes for first names. One "Lara" might pronounce it "Lar-A", but another might be "Lair-A." Each is valid.

From the viewpoint of someone with an unusual name that gets mispronounced constantly, I'm wondering if you asked these kids how to pronounce their names in the first days of the new school year. If not, then I really don't understand your defensive tone. You and I may not like their names and find them difficult, but they are the names given to them. That you're still getting names wrong once a week this far into the school year is a problem as far as I can tell. Would you have such a hostile attitude toward kids from Finland or Japan or Uganda who might also have names that are unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce?

That you're still getting names wrong once a week this far into the school year is a problem as far as I can tell. Would you have such a hostile attitude toward kids from Finland or Japan or Uganda who might also have names that are unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce? Of course I asked them. Or more specifically, when I took roll for the first weeks, I always said, "Correct me if I pronounce your name wrong." If you don't correct me, how am I supposed to know? These are 13 year olds, not kindergarteners. As for the others - I have over 300 students and my average choir class size is 60. If you're very quiet and hang in the back, it's quite possible I don't say your name that often, and if you corrected me back in September, I've forgotten since then. It's not personal. As for my international students - and there are many - in my experience, once you are familiar with the rules of spelling and pronunciation for those languages, you're good to go. It's only the English-speaking students whose families give them names that are spelled or pronounced in nonstandard ways. I get that it's frustrating to have your name constantly said or spelled wrong. My first name is Kristine. When I tell people it's spelled "with a K" I frequently get Khristine. My married last name also has an unexpected spelling and pronunciation, and my maiden name was so hard it was misprinted on my college diploma. I never got upset or huffy when my teachers misspelled or mispronounced one of my names as these young ladies do. In any event, I was going more for dry humor than hostile. Sorry if it came across the wrong way. It's been a long year.
