I have just gotten home from work, where I have consumed nothing but liquid all day...Guess what I am doing and what club I am joining? Yep! You guessed it! I am prepping for my very first colonoscopy! Kudos to me! Ugh....I hate the thought of this prep. The procedure doesn't bother me. I will be out and that is fine. It is the next 15 hours I am worried about. How fast will it hit me? How quickly will I be able to get the bathroom? Do I have enough wipes? How about A & D Ointment? I am drinking my first 8 0z dose of prep and I have heeded all the previous read warnings. I've got the first dose over ice and the rest chilling. I am drinking my it with straw to bypass my taste buds! Thanks for all the hints these past years...... Thank for allowing me to join the club!

Be prepared for giant long and loud farts when you are done with the procedure. Why the ever loving hell they make the spouse or friend stay with the patient during that time is beyond me.

Welcome to the club! It really is one of those clubs that nobody wants to join.

The prep isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think I was done in 3 hours or so then went to bed and had a good night's sleep.

Once you it kicks in don't expect to be able to leave the bathroom between doses. In fact take the rest of the bottle in the bathroom. Oh and some magazines or tablet to pass the time. Good luck.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm going to get one when I'm 40 because of a family history of colon cancer. Yea me!

Can I recommend that you not use wipes. Use a squirt bottle, every time you need to use the bathroom, 'wash' the rectal are with warm water from the squirt bottle. Then PAT to dry, do not wipe. You will need to use the bathroom a lot, and the less you wipe the better you will feel.... if you know what I mean. I used a plastic bottle with a squirt top, and it worked beautifully.

I thought the prep was the worst. I ended up vomiting a good portion of it. Yep, that was me pooping and vomiting at the same time. It wasn't one of my finer moments!
My instructions wanted me to drink way more than my body could handle and it needed to find its way out.
After my "episode" I did end up getting a pretty good nights sleep!
Good luck to you tomorrow!

Ugh, so sorry yours was that bad. It does seem like a god awful amount of liquid. I have 32 ounces, to be drank/drunk in 4 8oz servings...as I type this I am half done.

Glad you are getting it done! I was not lucky and it lasted a lot longer than 3 hours; but in the notes from surgery she said the prep was excellent and it made it easy to look around so that's the important part.
My biological father had colon (and stomach) cancer so I had my first one earlier this year at 42. Of course my family history scars me, but this is one form of cancer I feel I have a bit more control over. If that makes sense? Dr said I had a lot of polyps for my age, some large so coupled with my father's history she wants to see me back every year. Done. Snip 'em out while they are small.

You have my condolences! I was trying to schedule DH to finish fixing someone's appliance today and she was very adamant that he try to come before 3:30, since that's when she had to start her colonoscopy drink. She was afraid it would start working to quickly and she'd be running to the bathroom while he was there!

If you have the giant jug of stuff, just know that once things are "clear", you can stop drinking it. The nurse at my Dr office said they want you to drink at least half of it. I think I had one glass beyond half.

I know it's "too late" for the OP, but wanted to add my testimonial for Prepopik again. (2) 5 oz drinks. Easy Peasy. Good luck, OP! It'll be worth it to get the exam completed and off your list of things to do for a while. www.prepopik.com/?gclid=CK3tqcTgvMwCFcUdgQodQ5kA4Q

And I had to do it the night before and the morning of.

My condolences. DH had his last week. He stocked up on yellow and orange jello and popsicles and chx broth. He made it through with an A on his prep. I haven't joined the club yet (next year for me). I'm younger than all my friends and I've heard ALL their stories. Most are hilarious. I've noticed lately (in my group) is that all that stuff that was "taboo" to mention in our 20's, 30's and 40's is regular conversation now. Good luck. I hope all goes well.

Everything was way easier than I expected. My instructions were to take 2 Dulcolax tablets at 3 pm. Mix the half of the miralax w/32 oz of gatorade and drink 8 oz every 15 minutes until it was gone. Then at least 5 hours before my appointment I had to do the other half of the miralax. I never had a time where I was like i have to go now. It almost felt like I had to force myself to go sometimes. I got the wipes and everything but never even used them because it was kind of non-eventful. I had no gas after my colonoscopy that day. I felt fine and could have driven home with no issues after the procedure. My appointment was at 10:00 and I was home by 11:30am. I work 2nd shift and easily could have gone into work but I had taken the night off because it was recommended. I did eat as soon as I got home. I took a nap but it was just because I was tired after getting up at 3 am to do the other half of the miralax. Good luck. It really wasn't that bad but I am happy I don't have to have another one for 10 years. ETA - the worst part was the taste of the gatorade. I really don't like any flavor of gatorade. Having a bite of popsicle before I started to drink the 8 oz and after I finished it helped with that taste.

I would have liked a couple of dulcolax instead. Mine has a yucky taste that really isn't masked by the cold or straw or squirt of lemon mio. Maybe I'll try some Gatorade with my AM dose.

I just had my first scope last week. I drank a 10 oz. bottle of magnesium citrate at 1pm and it was almost 3pm before I had any "action". I was beginning to think it wasn't going to work! I drank another 10 oz. bottle at 7pm and things really kicked into high gear about that time. I took 5 little bisacodyl tablets at about 9:00pm. I tried not to wipe but I'll tell you what, I was so sore before it was over. I think it was the hemorrhoids that came out (yeah, OMG, I can not believe I'm typing this on the internet....) anyway, it burned so, so badly it brought tears to my eyes every time I had to go. That was the only bad part, really. Once I got all the stuff out of me, I was in bed by 10:30pm and slept all night. Sore bottom was gone by the next night and my scope showed nothing by hemorrhoids. Good times. Good times. Man, mid-40's are AWESOME!
