Well I just had my 1st one on Monday morning. Everything was way easier than I expected. My instructions were to take 2 Dulcolax tablets at 3 pm. Mix the half of the miralax w/32 oz of gatorade and drink 8 oz every 15 minutes until it was gone. Then at least 5 hours before my appointment I had to do the other half of the miralax. I never had a time where I was like i have to go now. It almost felt like I had to force myself to go sometimes. I got the wipes and everything but never even used them because it was kind of non-eventful. I had no gas after my colonoscopy that day. I felt fine and could have driven home with no issues after the procedure. My appointment was at 10:00 and I was home by 11:30am. I work 2nd shift and easily could have gone into work but I had taken the night off because it was recommended. I did eat as soon as I got home. I took a nap but it was just because I was tired after getting up at 3 am to do the other half of the miralax. Good luck. It really wasn't that bad but I am happy I don't have to have another one for 10 years. ETA - the worst part was the taste of the gatorade. I really don't like any flavor of gatorade. Having a bite of popsicle before I started to drink the 8 oz and after I finished it helped with that taste. Wow! Your prep sounds easier than most. I just drank 32 oz of grossness. I would have liked a couple of dulcolax instead. Mine has a yucky taste that really isn't masked by the cold or straw or squirt of lemon mio. Maybe I'll try some Gatorade with my AM dose. I think I missed some words when I was typing...hahaha. I had to do the tablets 1st at 3 pm. At 5 pm I had to do 32 ozs of gatorade and the miralax powder. Then at 3 am I had to do another 32 oz of the gatorade and miralax concoction. Each time I did the 32oz i had to drink it 8 oz at a time every 15 minutes.

Glad you are getting it done! I was not lucky and it lasted a lot longer than 3 hours; but in the notes from surgery she said the prep was excellent and it made it easy to look around so that's the important part. My biological father had colon (and stomach) cancer so I had my first one earlier this year at 42. Of course my family history scars me, but this is one form of cancer I feel I have a bit more control over. If that makes sense? Dr said I had a lot of polyps for my age, some large so coupled with my father's history she wants to see me back every year. Done. Snip 'em out while they are small. My niece has 27... The most her sr had seen.. And all were precancerous. She is a heavy smoker

This club sucks! The only benefit to having a feeding tube is that I can push the prep through my tube and don't have to drink liquid death. Now that I'm done bragging... Bottoms up. Bombs away. I wish you an easy (and it will be)procedure and normal results. Hang in there. It's almost over.

I really like that my doctor is so proactive. I will be meeting with a nutritionist through their office to attack it that way, and having a colonoscopy every year as opposed to every 3 or 5. It makes me feel more in charge and confident that I am doing what I can to keep it under control.

I have never had one. I'm 62, and I am with Kaiser. They are really big on preventative care, but I've never been told I needed this. They do send a kit to my house where I am to get a sample of poop on this little wand and it goes into a liquid of some type. You mail it in and get your results via mail in a week or so.
I hope that is an adequate testing procedure and I'm not developing problems without knowing it. Not that what you all are describing is making me envious in any way. I think I had better bring this up at my next appointment.

Lexica, IIRC it is recommended you have your first at 50 and then one every 5-10 years if no issues are found.

You know, it's not the worst thing I have been through. The prep is unpleasant and you have got some great advice here. Just know it is one day and will not last forever.

Lexica, IIRC it is recommended you have your first at 50 and then one every 5-10 years if no issues are found. I have heard that too. I turned 50 when I was with another insurance group. I scheduled the visit, but the doctor wouldn't see me until I had some other health issues worked out. My regular doctor at the time thought I had heart issues so I was doing the stress tests and a -heart Catholic? Is that right? Damn, I can't remember the name of the test where the feed the thing through your groin to get a visual of your arteries in your heart. It turned out that my heart was extremely clean. The doctor was quite surprised that it was so good for my age. By the time all that junk was dealt with, I changed jobs, so I never got in for one. I see my doctor every 3 months and get bloodwork done, so I will ask him what the deal is.

Our city has banned flushable wipes and our doctor recommended Balneol. It's a lotion that you put on toilet paper and use instead of a wipe. It's really soothing.

I know it's "too late" for the OP, but wanted to add my testimonial for Prepopik again. (2) 5 oz drinks. Easy Peasy. Good luck, OP! It'll be worth it to get the exam completed and off your list of things to do for a while. www.prepopik.com/?gclid=CK3tqcTgvMwCFcUdgQodQ5kA4QI knew there was a pea recommended one and couldn't remember. I didn't really have a choice. Thanks for the luck....3 more hours!

The prep isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think I was done in 3 hours or so then went to bed and had a good night's sleep. You were lucky! I have never had a "good" prep! The last time was awful! I was still going to the bathroom on the way to the procedure after starting it a 12:00 the afternoon before! I stopped 3 times in route to the doctor! Maybe I was just full of it!! LOL!
The next time I am not going to drink the whole container of that vile drink!

Can I recommend that you not use wipes. Use a squirt bottle, every time you need to use the bathroom, 'wash' the rectal are with warm water from the squirt bottle. Then PAT to dry, do not wipe. You will need to use the bathroom a lot, and the less you wipe the better you will feel.... if you know what I mean. I used a plastic bottle with a squirt top, and it worked beautifully. And, if you do use wipes, don't flush them even if they say they are flushable. They don't break down in the pipes and will cause you great plumbing problems in the future. Good luck on your prep and procedure. It's not that bad, really. I am a complete and total sissy and I survived it!

I just had my first scope last week. I drank a 10 oz. bottle of magnesium citrate at 1pm and it was almost 3pm before I had any "action". I was beginning to think it wasn't going to work! I drank another 10 oz. bottle at 7pm and things really kicked into high gear about that time. I took 5 little bisacodyl tablets at about 9:00pm. I tried not to wipe but I'll tell you what, I was so sore before it was over. I think it was the hemorrhoids that came out (yeah, OMG, I can not believe I'm typing this on the internet....) anyway, it burned so, so badly it brought tears to my eyes every time I had to go. That was the only bad part, really. Once I got all the stuff out of me, I was in bed by 10:30pm and slept all night. Sore bottom was gone by the next night and my scope showed nothing by hemorrhoids. Good times. Good times. Man, mid-40's are AWESOME! Yep! They sure don't tell you about all the fun stuff you get to do as a grown up! Don't be embarrassed, we all over share here. I used some A & D and didn't have too much burning...3 more hours and I'll be done. Thanks for the support!

Be prepared for giant long and loud farts when you are done with the procedure. Why the ever loving hell they make the spouse or friend stay with the patient during that time is beyond me. I am feeling extremely lucky after reading all the replies. Mine seemed to go so easy, way easier than I was expecting. I dodge the bullet and didn't have any farts right after the procedure. I was asked if I wanted my friend to come and sit with me and I asked how long I had to stay. I was then asked if I felt okay and if I could get dressed, I said certainly. So I got dressed and they walked me down to the waiting room and made sure my friend was there. l am sure that I had to stay in the recovery area at least a specific amount of time, but it seem quick. I also admit that on my last dose of the Prep I did throw up a little of it. 32 oz was just too much liquid for me at that time, and by that point the taste of the blizzard cherry Gatorade was just gross.. Hopefully danor98 is close to being done with the whole by now. Hope all went well and that it went better than you imagined. ETA - I just saw that danor98 posted a couple hours ago that she had 3 hours to wait. So while it is not almost done, hopefully she can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I had my first one at 39. Prep was ok, and the actual procedure was great. Best sleep I had in a long time. I honestly don't remember getting home. I know we stopped at Sonic afterwards, I was starving. I have no idea what I ate, if we ate there or brought it home. LOL Slept good that night, too!
I have to go for another. I need to get that scheduled this year.

Thank you, compeateropeator. I just got home about 30 minutes ago. Seriously the worse part of the whole ordeal was the awful headache I woke up with this morning. The prep, while not pleasant wasn't hideous either. Waited a while, lovely sedated sleep and then I woke up with my head screaming. My husband realized, after I said it many times that my head was an issue. The nurse got me a Toradol shot and within 20 minutes I was dressed and out. Thank you all for your stories and chuckles. Those of you that haven't gotten your screening done.....go do it. My report was all good and clear, aside from some slight diverticulitis I am good for 10 years!

Hey! Welcome to the club! It's much better than joining the OTHER club, where you have to be a member for a long time and the treatment is much worse. Prep is bad, but not awful. Next time I need a colonoscopy I'm doing the one that doesn't have the long prep. I've had friends do it and swear it's the only way to go. You spend a lot of time in the bathroom night before. Just the way it is. End in sight tho, so tolerable. Day of--easy peasy. You feel nothing, you remember nothing. It's just over and you move on with your life. Very nice.
