Anyone want to share living room photos? I have a 12 x 15 living room. I want new furniture, but I can't decide on a dang thing. I am tired of the overstuffed, too big leather furniture I have. I've searched Pinterest, furniture sites and google, but I just can't decide what I need. Here is a layout of what I am thinking of doing, as well as the current furniture below that. I've already given the loveseat away, so in the picture below, there is nothing currently in front of my picture window. Any ideas are appreciated. I lean traditional, but I want a more casual and airy feel now.

question. Do you watch a lot of TV? How will you feel about turning your head sideways for a long time to watch a show?

What is the primary function of the room? Entertaining guests? TV room? The runaway room (the room you run to for peace and quiet to read a book-or maybe I am the only one who has that kind of thing? )

I think you're right in getting new furniture for that space. Because the furniture is large and all brown it does look dark and heavy and a bit overcrowded. I would make sure at least one of the new furniture pieces has exposed legs to lighten things up a bit and give the illusion of lightness. If you want casual and airy, I would repaint a lighter color on the walls and go with lighter and more sheer curtains. It's hard to tell how dark this room actually is but it might benefit from some more lighting such a floor lamp.
Also, there is too much space between the two sofas, which makes conversation awkward. Instead of placing two sofas opposite each other, I would do an L-shaped configuration with sofa-love seat, love seat-love seat, or sofa with two smaller club chairs placed on the wall where you located the tv cabinet in your drawing. Or if you don't want your tv cabinet in front of the 12ft window, just reverse the configuration and have the sofa in front of the window. I personally would do a small square or round coffee table with this configuration, but that's just me.

Thanks for the responses. It is primarily used for tv watching (not huge tv watchers) and entertaining. I do plan on the new tv stand having taller legs so that there is space underneath for the cat bed. He likes to be enclosed when he's sleeping.
I did have the tv on the long wall opposite the window with the sofa on the window wall. I liked that configuration but the hubby did not. The tv can not go in front of the window as it goes almost to the floor and I hate TV's in front of windows.
I am going to repaint-probably heirloom white to match my dining room. I am ready to lighten up the space. The curtains are actually sort of sheer and they are staying. Custom made=$$$$$!
DH has already told me he wants to hang the tv on the far end of the room, but if I get enough opinions here to put the tv back on the long wall, maybe I'll win!

I immediately thought the same thing Freebird did--I wouldn't like the TV perpendicular to all of the seating. It just doesn't seem a comfortable way to watch TV. Is the wall with the bookcase too small for the TV? If so, I would have to have it on the wall that the sofa is on. I also agree with peano about the L-shaped formation--it's my favorite. I think it makes a nice conversation area and it insures that at least some of the seating has comfortable viewing spot for TV.

Pick a focal point and go from there. Don't forget about possible glare from the window.

I agree, you need smaller lighter colored furniture. We're in the process of re-doing our living room. One thing I've learned, don't go out and expect to find everything in the same day. Once you have one piece you absolutely love (for us it was the sofa and chair) take your time to find pieces to go with it and, make sure you take measurements and keep them with you. Furniture is stores looks tiny, but once they're delivered the suddenly seem to grow to twice their size.

Where to place the tv is tricky. If you mount it on the short wall by the window everyone coming in or by the room sees the TV and if your seating is oriented toward it, those watching will have their backs to the entry point into the room. If you place it on the long wall, you may get glare from the opposite window. The seating pattern would seem to be much better on the long wall though. I agree with another further up, I think an L-shaped sectional sized to the room would be much more appropriate.

I would put the TV where your bookcase is and a light-colored L-shaped section in the window corner with a big coffee table or ottoman in front. You could tuck a small chair in the corner where your TV currently is as well. If you want an inexpensive option, there's lots of blog love for the Ikea Ektorp sectional (for ex here: link). This is what I have in my family room, WHITE slipcovers and all. When it wore out (we LIVE on this sucker), we replaced it with exactly the same thing because we love it so much. Kids, dogs, etc. It works for us.

I agree with the others who have said that the seating should be directly across from the tv, and that you'd benefit from smaller furniture. My DH is an audio guy (it's both his job and his hobby - and the bane of my existence) and he hates sitting at an angle from the tv. Our landlords just listed our house, so I have some pictures of our current living room. It's probably about the same size as yours, although the pics were shot with a super wide angle lens, so it looks fat. But you can get the picture (no pun intended) of how it's set up. The TV is directly across from the sofa. There's usually a chair at the end of the rug closest to the photographer in this picture. It's in the bottom picture. (We're in the process of moving and DD wanted to have a chair in the family room, so it got moved in there.) But you can tell the scale of the furniture from the pictures. We bought the sofa and chair from a website before moving into the house, sight unseen. I've been really happy with the quality. I can't think of the website now, but if you want it, I'll dig it up. ETA: The website is Room & Board.
