I feel like i have a uti. Have not had one in 20 years. Ive been sick this past week with head cold and now feel like ive developed the uti. Ive seen the kits at the store for over the counter treatment/tests. Do they work?

I'm not sure what they contain as I've never seen them, but unless they have an antibiotic.....I wouldn't place my money on them. UTI's are bacterial infections. If not treated appropriately, they can lead to urosepsis which is a emergency situation.

I can't speak to the kits at the store. I can tell you that it's worth going to get antibiotics to treat it.
I had what I thought might be a UTI about 3 weeks ago. I drank more water and cranberry juice for a few days and felt better. Then I had a very stressful week when DB passed and that same Sunday I went to the ER in extreme pain. My "better" UTI had moved into my kidneys. You do not want that! Holy Hell! It felt like someone stabbed me in the kidneys for about 4 days.
Just go to the doc, if you can. Save yourself the pain and misery.

They aren't a cure, just a temporary pain relief. If you think you have a uti you need to have a urine test done to diagnose. If you just ignore it and treat the pain it can turn into a full blown kidney infection.

The OTC meds for the pain of an UTI do help, but they don't resolve the infection causing the pain. You need a prescription for antibiotics to cure the infection. Drinking lots and lots of water is also a good idea.

yeah, I thought the OTC stuff was only for pain relief too. don't chance it--go to the doctor and get it treated.

From experience they mask the symptoms very well but they don't treat them. Antibiotics are usually needed.

I have been able to head them off with 100 percent cranberry juice. No sugar. Straight juice. If that does not help, to the doc I go. But I have been more successful than not. Especially if early.

I agree about getting it checked out. You don't want to end up with a kidney issue.

I have been on an antiobiotic since Saturday for a UTI. My lower back and the back of my legs between my thighs and knees hurt like crazy when I move. The doctor said that will go away with antibiotics but after 3 days the UTI is getting better, but the leg pain seems to be getting worse to me. I have another dr apt on Friday.

AVO or whatever you call it works really well as a pain reliever until you can see your doctor. It does not cure it though. You need antibiotics. The pain killer will mask your symptoms and make you think the UTI is gone but in reality it's still there and it's slowly spreading to your kidneys.

Cystex is an OTC anti-bacterial that can work if you are well acquainted with the symptoms enough to start taking it immediately at the first sign of a UTI. It's not an antibiotic like you need an Rx for, so it may not be effective for you or your particular bug, but as someone who used to regularly deal with UTIs I can tell you I've had it knock them out after a few days.
It takes a lot of those pills and I'd say you're probably better off going to the Dr, but I got tired of needing to pay for a visit plus a UA/C&S every few months PLUS having to take an antibiotic that usually upsets my stomach and/or gives me a yeast infection. For me, the Cystex is a great solution. My Dr was not the type to just give me a PRN Rx for antibiotics, though some docs will for women prone to multiple UTIs.
Thankfully, I seem to have gotten over my propensity to develop them and haven't had one in a few years but I still have some Cystex on hand just in case.

You will need an antibiotic to treat a UTI. In 2013 I had a UTI but few normal symptoms of a typical UTI. Started on a Friday and by Monday night I was in the ER with a fever of 104 and had a heart attack.
It resulted from having Ecoli that spread to my kidneys. I was in ICU for 8 days and then a regular floor bed for 2 days.
Sometimes you don't know if a UTI is caused by Ecoli or another bacteria.
I do not wait around when I suspect a UTI and neither does my doctor!
