Today one candidate intimated that another candidate's father was involved in the assassination of JFK. Not to be outdone, that candidate responded by talking about the other's venereal disease.
Is this who we have become? Is this really what the American people are asking for?

Inappropriate on both counts. Especially the JFK thing. I do not think you can hold someone responsible for the actions of their forebears. If we do, a lot of us would be guilty of slaveholding among other things.
STD's irrelevant. The behavior resulting in them may or may not be pertinent.
I think the mud slinging, raking over the coals and invasions of privacy of candidates and their families and appointees and their families keep a lot of really good people out of government. (For instance Colin Powell).
To answer your question, I think we have always been somewhat like that. Periodically we strive to get away from it, but things seem to always end up back there again.

After watching "Race for the Whitehouse" on CNN, which looks at a variety of presidential races over the course of our country's history, this is actually nothing new. Doesn't mean I like it, but it's not new, sadly.

Have you read nothing about our historic presidential elections?
Shakin' my head here over the idea that this is something new.

Well in my lifetime, I've never had to listen to a candidate brag about the size of his penis or another one reference his venereal disease, so I would say that it's at least not normal in modern times. I'm not ignorant about historical elections but I'm sorry, it's ridiculous to say that what the candidates are actually saying themselves this time is just par for the course. Operatives spreading ugly stories about John McCain's kids, etc., that's normal dirty politics. This reality tv version we're living through right now is something different.

I've been around for a bunch of years and don't remember one candidate speaking like these losers. I find it absolutely disgusting.

I think it is sad that these are our choices. I have voted in many elections and have never felt like there just wasn't one candidate that I felt like I could support. I will just end up voting against the one I like least once it comes down to the end. I hate that.

I didn't hear about the venereal disease. Ridiculous.
Not surprising, though, especially in this era of reality tv. We are what we eat.

And it's going to get worse before it gets better. You think Trump vs. the Republicans is bad? Just wait for Trump vs. Hillary. I want to leave the planet until this election is over and done with.
And for the record, I think Trump's suggestion that Ted Cruz's father was involved in the Kennedy assassination is even more revolting than his usual very low bar.
I swear I would vote for Cruz before I would vote for Trump, and that's really saying something.

By this time I'm just rather bemused by it all. It boggles my mind that the two people with the highest negatives are the top runners in their respective parties. That's just some kind of weird disconnect.
Then I was reading about Sanders speech in which he was talking about the super delegates and how they should vote the way their state voted, but then somehow tried to make it so they voted the national trend. Or something. I couldn't figure it out. I'm really sick of that finger he's always jabbing in the air. By this time I just want to slap it down. (Don't criticize, we've talked about personal attributes that bug us before, like Cruz's weird pauses when he talks.)
It seems like about every 3 or 4 days we have two events: Trump says another outrageous thing and Hillary has to walk back or apologize for some comment or stance she has taken. After reading that thread on astrology, I'm wondering if mymindseyedpea could chart that for us and predict the next ones.
And then there's the "candidate x has to win this state or else ..." lather, rinse, repeat for the next state.
It's certainly one of the most interesting elections that most of us have seen - all the way around.
Yes, I know it's for the highest office in the land, but I just can't go around being outraged or shocked all the time.

This is where I wave around my oh, so useful Political Science degree (really, what was I thinking?). Anyway, in my own defense, I used to love politics. Can't say that anymore, that's for sure. Obviously, getting said degree I had to study all sorts of fun history, & followed politcs closely since getting that degree in *mumbles so my age won't show, 1992*. Lived oversea's in Asia & Europe for 10 years, where, really, politics can be knock down drag out fights. And I have to agree with Sarah, haven't seen anything like this. The amount of penis reference alone has been, something. Didn't think there was much that could make me feel anything for Ted Cruz, but when I read Trump's repeating of a story about Lee Harvey Oswald & Cruz Sr., even my black heart felt a pang for the man. And I'll agree with Lucy, I truly fear the level of distaste that will flow from Trump if he runs against a woman. That crap he spouted about Carly Fiorina will be the tip of the iceberg I'm willing to bet.

If the media would give the Libertarian candidate even a small portion of attention that it is giving the rest of the circus, I bet there would be a LOT of people who would consider voting that way.

Trump has shown he can say whatever he wants and it doesn't matter. Today showed that. The media eats it up and he wins. I'm totally disgusted at Fox & CNN. The protests don't help either. In fact I think they did just the opposite. It just makes Republican angrier. I'm so dang frusrated because I don't know where to go. . I wish there were other things Cruz should have been doing and been stronger about. I was ready to give up my Republican card. That still may be a .consideration because I can not morally in good conscience vote for Trump. I do think it will get worse before it gets better.

Yes, I know it's for the highest office in the land, but I just can't go around being outraged or shocked all the time. There are astrologers who looked at the natal charts of each candidate and predicted which one would most likely win come election time due to the astrological influence there will be with their natal planets during that time. Actually Dee the lady who played that mom on E.T gave her prediction of who it will be. I don't really participate in predictions because I like to keep the future as a mystery unfolding. I only heard Dee talking on the radio because my mom was here playing it. And I don't know of when the next days these political events that are to occur will be because I'm not into politics. But in the astrological sense as it is right now and will be till late June, there is not much of a forward influence going on. So anyone who is pushing, expressing impatience or demanding, may find more obstacles come their way. There is also an influence of miscommunication happening for the next few weeks. I don't know what is happening with the political events, but I'm guessing there are things being said that should have been reflected on more before they were said.

I wish the media would give any other party attention. I have always been annoyed by the waste of energy and funding that fuels the Rep. vs Dem. battles year after year, but this year, I'm disgusted by the way each of the major parties are fighting within their own parties as well. I wish there would be enough of an increase in 3rd party votes to make the Republicans and Democrats take notice. Because right now, each side clearly believes that we're a bunch of morons who will blindly vote for whichever major party we've always voted for, so they can do whatever the hell they want to do.

I think the Democrats can use Trump's own words against him without sinking waaaay down to his level.
There should be nothing scarier to The American people and indeed the entire world then an "unpredictable" President Trump who "won't take nukes off the table".
He has said he wants to be unpredictable and he has said he won't takes nukes off the table. I'm sure some smart advertising type could put together a political ad that shows him making those comments in a way to scare the crap out of people. As they should be.

Cause it's working. How is that nasty? I wasn't trying to be nasty. Sheesh. I was simply wondering if you know what was actually said because the OP doesn't really depict what was said and you yourself said you hadn't heard it. I actually thought it was kind of funny.
