using earbuds, it changes the way the buds seat in your ears, and the quality of the sound. It also clears the sidewalk if people notice your facial contortions while you check this out.

I would have to actually be using ear buds to test this. I am seldom listening to music while in public. At home I just hook my phone up to a speaker and torture my children with my NPR podcasts.
