Well I presume surfers wear them to protect their skin from scraping on the sand. Some people wear them for sun protection.

It's basically a shirt that protects you from the sun or reef. My family burns in the moonlight, so my kids will wear the 50 upf rash guards.

A top to wear to protect you from the sun. I like it because it has sleeves and I wear it over a swim top. Good for kids to and they often come in matching sets for kids. More and more kids are using them, mostly boys, but they are super cute! Plus they dry fast so they can wear them as a top after they are done swimming.

Surfers wear them because sand will stick in the wax on a surfboard and it's rough sliding on it while paddling or sliding off the board. Much cooler than a wetsuit in warm weather. They also keep you from getting a sunburn, so a lot of people wear them at the beach. Most dry out quickly, too. Much better than the T-shirts I wore way back in the days I had a board... those days are long gone, but they were fun!

I wore one from lands end last year when we went to Lake Tahoe & rode jet skis in July. We are Texans and the water was so cold! Rash guard helped keep me warm & protected my 50 year old skin from sun. Also wore it in Santa Cruz California when on the beach & on the whale watch boat..
My nearly 2 yr old grandson will wear one when he is in our pool or playing outside this summer...

they also don't stretch out when wet like a t-shirt.

People answered this question on that thread and even linked pictures, if you read the whole thread.
It's a shirt made out of swimsuit material.
Originally surfers wore them to protect their chests from their boards.
Now it is very common for kids to wear them. You can find them for kids at Target, WM, anywhere:
You can find them for adults at Old Navy, Lands End, Academy, etc.
They are extremely common here.

They have enabled DH and I to enjoy the sun for more than a few minutes at a time. We burn so easily even with sunblock. And when you're riding slides or tubes at places like Schlitterbahn the sunblock comes off a lot faster. Love them!
