I bought this dress with rewards coupons I had from shopping for DD at Old Navy: dress
I am short and quite chunky and will definitely wear a denim jacket or a lightweight cardigan over it. But I am not sure what to do about a bra. Strapless have never been that comfy but I can try again to find one that works. I'm thinking it's tacky to wear a bra with straps - even if I am planning to keep the jacket or cardigan on. Any other options? ETA - I bought the dress in black

If I have no intention of taking the cardigan off, I'd wear a regular nude colored bra.

A bandeau top would work.

I know I would have to wear a bra with that dress. I'd wear a strapless bra.
I never liked strapless bras until I found some from La Sezna (I know! NOT usually a good place to buy good bras from). The ones I bought have some sort of rubbery stuff on the inside of the band that help the bra stay up and in place. I prefer the ones that are molded as they have quite a bit of support.

Unless you have very perky boobs I think you'll have to wear a bra. I'm only a 34B and a dress like that without a bra would make me look droopy as heck. Either strapless, or if you're leaving the jacket on, thin straps would be fine.

I agree with Ashley. I found a bra that sounds like its the same as hers at Soma and my future dil just bought one at Marshalls.

Thank you all -
Hadn't thought about nude bra with straps - will try it on with that . . . silly me was thinking black dress, black bra, lol.
Will look into the bandeau option as well, that sounds comfy.
Googling La Sezna now and will look at Soma online also.
Thank you again!

What about a bra with clear straps? They won't show under a cardigan. I have a similar dress and wear it with a strapless bra that has the rubbery stuff that Ashley mentioned, I swear after half an hour it feels like that thing is trying to kill me

That dress is cute! If you don't plan on taking the jacket off then be comfortable and wear the bra with straps.

I am normally a bra-hater and I rip that thing off before I'm barely home and in the door, but I don't mind strapless bras all that much. The one I have now, from La Senza, I wore to a wedding and only adjusted it once, too. It stayed up very well.

If I were planning on wearing the jacket/cardigan the whole time, I'd use whatever regular bra with straps was most comfortable and made the girls look best! I wouldn't even worry about color of said bra in that scenario.

I have a dress similar to that and I CANNOT go braless. While I do not like a strapless bra sometimes you just have to wear one. I have one with removable straps. It came with 2 sets; one clear and one to match the bra. But I have also worn the dress to work where I knew I wouldn't take my jacket off so I just wore a regular bra. Much more comfortable.

I think my problem is I tend to wear it too tight for fear it's going to end up round my ankles. Stupid I know!! I used to work in La Senza btw, sad that here in the UK it's gone in to administration again.

It depends on the girls... Mine point south on their own... A bra is a must! If yours are pointing the way forward, you could go with out. Also, do they stop when you stop? If not, wear a bra!

i cannot go braless ever so I would say strapless (Wacoal makes a great one and will hold you up, Im a G and it supports me) or if you keep your cardigan on who cares about straps? Be comfortable!

It is really, really hard to pull off going braless. You have to have the right set of girls.
I've got a strapless bra from Soma that has the rubbery stuff that keeps the band in place. I love that bra! Otherwise, I'd look for a bra that has the straps you can change and try either nude or the clear.

Yep, my girls are unfortunately not the cooperative type and they both hang and point downward. One more than the other. Ugh.
La Senza didn't have the size I needed (refer back to the quite chunky description in the OP) so I ordered a strapless bra from Soma to try. For what I paid for it I am going to have to really love it or I will return it.
In the meantime I am going to try to wear the dress with a nude bra with thin straps for date night this weekend.
Really appreciate all the input!

Unless you've got rock-solid breasts that can stand up on their own, you need a bra with that kind of dress or you'll end up looking frumpy.

Based on what you said (not perky) than yes I say for sure where something with it. If you don't find a strapless you love or that helps than go for clear straps and wear a little shrug or something.

I wear bras all the time with dresses like this, AND a jacket. There is NO way I'm taking the jacket off so that others can see my "Thigh Arms"....and my boobs are not going to stay up on their own, that much is FOR SURE. After a very bad experience in college with one of those "rubbery" like strapless bras, I'll never again wear strapless! I still remember the pain of PEELING it off after a night of hot dancing and sweating! 35 years ago and I can still feel that top layer of my skin peeling away with the bra!

I thing your dress is cute. I'd vote for the strapless bra or goobernut's suggestion of a bandeau. If you go somewhere that is hot or get food on your jacket it would be nice to have the option of taking it off without showing bra straps, says the woman who recently had a waitress drop dishes and silverware that went sliding down her outfit.

I have had alterations places add straps too before. Then you could wear one?

You can also get a bra with transparent straps if you don't like strapless.

You can also get a bra with transparent straps if you don't like strapless. I think those straps suck. For one thing, because they're plastic transparent, they're kinda shiny and thus, quite noticeable. In addition, because they're plastic, they don't stretch or give at all and I think they dig into me. They seemed like such a great idea too!

You can also get a bra with transparent straps if you don't like strapless. I found one a couple of years ago at JCPenney that had regular straps and interchangeable transparent straps.
