Oh, I'm so pleased they haven't gone with that name. Good for a laugh but not for a UK polar research ship!

RRS Sir David Attenborough is a very good, very fitting choice.
To be honest, I can't believe Boaty McBoatface was even in the running. It sounds like a choice made in the movie Idiocracy.

I love it. Appropriate and heartwarming. ETA: UK Peas, isn't it his 90th this year? IIRC I saw something about celebratory programmes on the nature channel/s and so on. Well deserved

Boaty McBoatface was too funny. Sure, there was no way they would name it that, but it made me laugh. Also, I liked "I like big boats and I cannot lie."

I read that the research vessel aboard the ship will be given that name. Boaty is pretty cute for a yellow submarine, don't you think?

It was fun to pretend that they might go with Boaty McBoatface, but I think they made the right choice.

I actually disagree. I think that they should have run with it. If they had they could have had a huge twitter and Facebook following, and really gathered a lot of attention for the work they are doing. It was an awesome opportunity to create a fun and exciting way to grab public attention around the globe, engage kids in the reseatch, encourage science and learning for all. Merchanidising, children's books, etc. Could have added to research funding, which is always needed.
Disappointing decision, IMO, because frankly now no one will care about this vessel and the work they are doing. What a shame.

They still have the sub named that and can still many educational specials with that.

I think the RRS Sir David Attenborough is a perfect choice. One of my friends at work, whose brother lives in the UK, told me that Boaty McBoatface was a done deal! I didn't realise it was still up for votes.

Yes, it is his 90th on 8th May. Lots of his programmes on at the moment to celebrate the occasion. We have a pop-up Attenborough channel running this week, in his honour; all sorts of his programmes from over the years. I think he would single-handed lay be responsible for so many people's knowledge and love of creatures from around the world. Perfect name for the research ship.

I am really pleased that the research ship will named after David Attenborough - by the sounds of it he's not so well known in America, but I don't imagine there are many people in Britain (or the rest of the Commonwealth probably) that do not know of him, or hold a soft spot for him. But I am really delighted that the sub will be called Boaty McBoatface - as you say, it can lead to all sorts of spin offs. I can see children's television programmes, and newspaper/book cartoons about his adventures. I will be one of the first in line for a soft toy sub called Boaty McBoatface.

Merchanidising, children's books, etc. Could have added to research funding, which is always needed. Disappointing decision, IMO, because frankly now no one will care about this vessel and the work they are doing. What a shame. I disagree. The title of the ship is actually RRS (Royal Research Ship) Sir David Attenborough and it follows ships named Ernest Shackleton, James Cook and Discovery. These ships work with Royal Navy vessels, currently HMS Protector, to provide logistics and scientific support to the British Antarctic Survey. To run with the suggested name would have just made it into a complete farce, a big joke! The people who serve on these ships for up to a year at a time and on the Survey team don't deserve that! These ships do research on behalf of our Government so no contribution to funding from a commercial source could be accepted anyway. Naming the new ship RRS Sir David Attenborough honours one of the UK's favourite and well loved Naturalists on his 90th birthday. In my opinion, it's an apt and fitting name for the new ship joining the Royal Research Ship fleet. And a lot of us here do care about these ships and the work they are doing and the media report on the work they are doing!
