I don't think he's hiding anything. I don't think any candidate should have to release their tax returns. As long as they file a tax return annually that's all I care about.

He's being audited, right? So I look at it as being kind of like not speaking about a pending lawsuit - this isn't the time for that information to be public.
(I can't believe I just defended the man...)

I thought I heard him recently say that he was bein audited and that when that is done that he would release them. Is the audit done and he's refused to follow through with that statement?
I found it interesting that he also said that he gets audited every single year. I'm no fan of the man but that has to suck big time.

I guess the bigger question is, what happens if he's convicted for fraud with the Trump University thing that is going on. I admit, I do not know much about the case except former students say they were ripped off.
ETA: I don't know if it's true anonymous will come out with damaging info on him or not, but that will make things interesting!

I don't care about seeing tax returns myself, in general ... but it IS customary for candidates to release them. Trump isn't refusing on grounds of privacy, he's claiming it's due to audits. But when this first came up, the IRS released a statement that they had no problem with his returns being released to the public. So that's just typical Trump BS.
I guess it's some combination of he doesn't have as much money as he claims, he hasn't paid anything much in taxes and/or his charitable contributions are an embarrassment.
I've already heard that most of his charitable contributions are "in kind," such as donating a golf resort weekend to a silent auction. Not much in the way of cash gifts.

The Trump University thing is a civil case, not criminal, so he wouldn't get convicted, he would just face heavy damage awards to pay off people he's injured financially.

I was thinking about his charitable contributions today when this tax subject came up. FTR, I don't care about any candidate's taxes. When Trump was doing The Celebrity Apprentice, he would always match the funds given by whatever company was hosting that week. I don't know what account those donations came from, but unless they weren't really donated and just big talk for the show, it would be charitable. But I have no idea how his finances work, so I'm just kind of thinking out loud.

It's quite common for individuals to release tax information. Federal judges and others in positions of public trust are actually required to do so. Not only because of fraud issues, but to check for potential conflict of interests.
ETA: federal administrative law judges. They are also required to submit extensive yearly financial disclosure statements, all of which are reviewed by an independent agency.

I think he should release them. What I heard is that he doesn't want it really known how little he actually gives to charity,. He claims he is so generous, but most of it is not in cash or anywhere as much as he boasts.

Next they'll be demanding his birth certificate! HA HA HA! The fact is that Trump has demanded all sorts of insane things from prior candidates, but when it comes to something that everyone releases, he is not sharing. To me, that means he is hiding something. The fact that he is being audited doesn't bother me at all. I imagine he, like others of great wealth get audited way disproportionately to us regular people. But you can't ask/demand/insist that others be forthcoming and not yourself. Well, I guess you can, but you should be called on it!

I found it interesting that he also said that he gets audited every single year. I'm no fan of the man but that has to suck big time. If he is telling the truth. He doesn't have a very good track record with that. He also files bankruptcy four times alone just in his Atlantic City casino over a relatively short period of time. That could be a factor. I was audited for the year my mom died. It bit my butt hard. I didn't know I had to file on what I inherited. I was 23 and a full time student. I had no clue what I was doing.

Irony, thy name is Donald Trump.
Remember when he offered to donate $5 million to charity if President Obama released his college transcripts, even though no president ever had before? I remember the transcript thing getting support here.
(If that gambit had worked, we wouldn't be questioning whether he makes charitable contributions, right?)

I find the whole tradition of candidates releasing tax returns frankly bizarre. And living in a country where ALL tax returns are public (just log on to our equivalent of the IRS' website, and you can find every tax return ever recorded) I find it odd why candidates don't release them.

(if only....)

Interesting, the Washington Post had an article on this, this morning. For those of you who don't like the Post, this is the Pinocchio section and it's equally attacking to both sides. It gives a lot of interesting facts about releasing your taxes and fact checks statements Trump has made, like the times he has said he'd release them if Obama showed his birth certificate. Here's the article. WaPo Fact Check article on releasing tax returns

Maybe it's not how much he donated to charity, but which ones he doesn't want the American people to know about.

I find the whole tradition of candidates releasing tax returns frankly bizarre. I don't get it either. What's the point? Why do people care? What does their tax return have to do with their candidacy? Doesn't that breach the public/private persona barrier?
