I had dinner last week paid $15.10 then added $3.90 tip to make it $19.00. I just looked at my bank statement and I was charged $27.10! I called the manager and read off what was on the receipt. He called me back after he found their copy and said "well, you have a little kick up at the bottom of the 3 and it was put in as $13.90". Seriously. So, I nicely said "the total at the bottom was $19. There is also no way $13.90 + $15.10 = $27.10. I wasn't looking for excuses, mistakes happen, just take care of the bill." He then tells me he'll credit me the difference and I should really watch how I make a "3". Here's the really funny part...I am a first grade teacher and pride myself on my printing!!!  |

I would take my receipt and march in there and say show me how my "3" has a kick-up.

It sounds more like someone wrote a number one before your three and he's being a weasel and won't admit it.
If it's a chain restaurant, I would consider complaining to corporate about tipping fraud. It's theft.

If it was a chain, I'd call and complain just to make sure they had record of it. Schemes to steal $ from restaurants are rampant. His attitude would make me suspect there's something going on and he's in on it. But my DH was a restaurant manager for years before he made a career change, so I've heard a lot of stories.

I check the statements pretty good, but I don't bother keeping the receipts. Maybe I should now.

I always keep restaurant receipts - mostly because I use my business card to pay for them, so I need to enter them into my accounting program and balance it with my bank statement.
Haven't caught an error yet - but good to know to check!

How does $13.90 plus $15.10 equal $27.10? I suspect something is up as well. I could get that it was input as $13.90, but the numbers just don't add up. Either something hinky is going on or someone needs a calculator.

If the restaurant won't fix it, go to your card issuer and have them help you.

I keep telling DH to make sure he does not leave room for a one when he's adding the tip on any credit card slip. Putting the $ close to the number is supposed to help prevent those pesky additional ones. I always check the statement too.
