Tortillas. They are soooo amazing from scratch but not worth the time.
I nearly always make baked goods from scratch but agree about the Ghiradelli brownies. They are the best ever.

Thanks, YooHoot! What brand do you buy? I used to love heating the homemade ones up straight on the burners on a gas stove. However, I now have a flat top stove.

Another one for pie dough... I have made awesome pie dough.. its just not worth the time.
Fresh pasta is another one... the ROI is just not there.
Pretty much every thing is better homemade but I dont have the time so I mix it up.

So many many things. Life is too short ..... ! This. (But I do like to cook/bake) Regarding cornbread. I always make it from scratch. I make my Nana's recipe using only 1/4 cup sugar, so not too sweet. My Mom has always used the Jiffy mix. It's OK, but never ever buy Marie Callendar's mix. YUCK! It's too smooth (fine ground cornmeal?) and way too sweet.

Yellow cake Fresh pasta Ketchup Flaky pastry dough Pie crust...I can make it, but mine isn't so much better that I'd rather spend the time to do it.
And my favorite thing EVER: rice in a bag! Either the Uncle Ben's pouches, or frozen from Trader Joe's.

Pie Crust is something I'd rather buy in the refrigerated section than make myself.
Bagels. I tried once, that was enough.
Sandwich bread.
Ice Cream. I have made my own and while it is amazing, it is a ton of work. Especially since DH prefers custard if it is homemade.

I work full time, so while there are things I'm sure would be worth the time and effort, I just don't have the time. I have made brownies from scratch, but boxed mix is just fine, too. I occasionally make a huge batch of spaghetti sauce and freeze it, but am totally fine with a jar of Prego.

Yellow Cake (but, always homemade frosting) Chinese Dumpling Wrappers Italian Dressing (Olive Garden or Zesty Italian)
Most other things I prefer scratch, even if I don't always like to take the time to make them.

I make my own yellow cakes, brownies, pie crust, mac n cheese and lots of the things mentioned. but then I grew up in a family with lots of food allergies and everything was made at home..even bread and mayo. I am the odd ball out.

Pumpkin pie. ONE TIME I cooked down a pumpkin for pie. Never again.
Brownies. They should be easy enough and they are easy enough to make from scratch. But they were nowhere near as good as any box mix.

@scrappy surfer !!!! SO glad you mentioned sourdough bread !!!! . I've been wanting to research the best recipes & was planning on asking about it here. You mentioned "feeding" it----I have NO idea what that means ---yet ! --- All I know is, even the great bakeries I've bought sourdough from just don't make it as sour as I like! Since I can't buy it, would LOVE to make some that tastes as YUMMY as the kind we had on a fun trip to San Fransisco a few years ago! . Also, as a child/teen, I got to enjoy it because my Dad has lotsa business trips to San Fran & would bring back a few loaves. a few loaves

Wow. Some of the things you guys list are things I would never, ever in a million years consider making from scratch. Tortillas. Pasta. Ketchup. Dumpling wrappers. Puff pastry. Sandwich bread. Never, ever, ever. I do use cake mixes (especially angel food ... I've never made one from scratch) and cookie dough and brownie mix (another Ghirardelli fan), but I also make those from scratch sometimes, too. Just depends. I never use grocery store frosting, though ... ICK. I make pecan pie and pumpkin pie ( jenjie, try again ... fresh pumpkin is easy to cook and tastes soooo good ... be sure you use baking pumpkins, not carving pumpkins) but never fruit pies or cream pies or lemon meringue. Those I buy. I doctor up jarred spaghetti sauce or make my own. I buy meatballs or make my own. I use onion soup mix or cream of mushroom or taco seasoning when called for, but I only make gravy completely from scratch. It just depends.

I agree with so many of these - bread crumbs, tomato sauce, pizza, fried chicken (though I do make awesome chicken tenders). I also don't make mac 'n cheese from scratch, because I prefer the blue box. It's one of those holdovers from childhood. Also, the type/ brand of cornmeal makes a difference. The King Arthur corn meal is my fav if I can find it. If you haven't, try making it with some stone ground (coarse) corn meal. Makes a huge difference! As long as my kids aren't the ones 'stone grinding' it. That was a huge hospital bill last time. they had both just had a segment in school on the Lenape Indians, they were in like 2nd & 4th grade, DD convinced DS that they should find flat stones and grind corn and sunflower seeds into flower. Went 'fine' until DD 'ground' the end of DS's pinky. Despite the doctors prediction, DS's pinky and pinky nail look fine now.

I just read all responses, and I have to add :
Brownies ---YES! Mix is WAY better!!!
Tortillas---I've TRIED...they're impossible!!! I I also get the raw ones at Walmart & cook at home ..SO yummy!!!! (I HATE the packaged white flour tortillas, but the packaged corn are yummy!)
Wow...condiments! I also never considered making those!
Wow...cottage cheese! I LOVE it, and never considered making it---but---yum!
Wow!...puff pastry! Another thing I'd never consider making from scratch; but if I tried, it probably wouldn't come out right (too delicate!!!) But I'll bet it'd be SO yummy homeade!!!!
I read SO many yummy things about COSTCO here!!!! I WISH we had 'em here !!!

Since I can't buy it, would LOVE to make some that tastes as YUMMY as the kind we had on a fun trip to San Fransisco a few years ago! . Also, as a child/teen, I got to enjoy it because my Dad has lotsa business trips to San Fran & would bring back a few loaves. a few loaves A sourdough starts with a fermented "Starter" it needs regular additions of flour and water (aka Feeding it) Yeasts from the air cause the flour/water to ferment. eta: you get a starter going, then use part of it in your recipe and "feed" the rest of it so it continues to ferment. Each time you bake bread you use part and replenish the other part. So it gets tangier and tangier as time passes. It also picks up different yeasts floating in the air which will slowly alter the flavor of the starter over time. The old yeasts keep growing as long as the starter if kept feed and not allowed to die. San Fransisco has a uni que natural yeast in the area and many of the bakeries have starters that are literally a hundred years old or older which makes for very tangy bread. As far as I know no one has been able to replicate SF sourdough outside of SF and without the help of a well established bakery. So don't be disappointed if your bread doesn't taste quite like what you got in SF. You aren't working with the same materials they have in the bakeries.

After always using boxed mixes, I was SO looking foward to my FIRST attempt at cornbread from scratch. The recipe included cornmeal, cream corn, SOUR CREAM (yum!!), etc. Well, it had NO flavor---NONE !!!! Luckily, I had a box of 'Jiffy' cornbread mix to the rescue!!! You are sooooo right. I have tried so many cornbread recipes, and NONE were as good as the mix in the box. Or the kind at the bakery. They have zero flavor! My daughter has actually asked me to stop trying to make it myself. Lol

Oh, so many things I could list here. Pie crust, spaghetti sauce, most salad dressings….. Big kudos to those who love to spend time in the kitchen. I've spent years wishing I were one of you, but I'm coming to peace with who I am. I cook, and I think I cook well, and a good amount of it is from scratch, but I'm really just not that into it. I've seen this line before, but I just came across it again today. It sums up how I feel: I only have a kitchen because it came with the house. Love that last line. I sooo hate anything kitchen related. The shopping, the prepping of food, cooking, clean up. Ugh. I need a sister wife for that!

You need a better cornbread recipe, because from scratch is much better than Jiffy! I'll agree with you on German chocolate cake frosting. Ummm...you need to share that recipe!
