pesto fresh salsa tzatziki I buy all of these at Costco and they are worth it. And I think each of these is so easy to make and much better fresh! Yes, easy but fiddly. I hate making fiddly things.

Raised glazed doughnuts. My mom used to make them and they were really good when she did it. But unless the oil is the exact right temperature they can turn out really heavy and greasy. So much easier to go to a decent bakery and buy them.
My DH would beg to differ with you guys on the homemade bread, from scratch brownies, cookies, cake and pie that I've been known to make! I love to bake though and have been doing it most of my life so I'll admit I've gotten pretty good at it over the years.

For me it's Lasagna...I loathe making it but loving eating it.
We have a local deli that makes the best lasagna. I will pay them whatever they charge just so I don't have to make it.

Brownies. Cake. (I live at high altitude and getting from-scratch cake to turn out and not fall in the middle NEVER works for me. Never.) Fried Chicken. Makes a huge mess.

So many many things. Life is too short ..... ! This. (But I do like to cook/bake) Regarding cornbread. I always make it from scratch. I make my Nana's recipe using only 1/4 cup sugar, so not too sweet. My Mom has always used the Jiffy mix. It's OK, but never ever buy Marie Callendar's mix. YUCK! It's too smooth (fine ground cornmeal?) and way too sweet. I LOVE Marie Callendar's cornbread! I use a copycat recipe of her cornbread. I only like cornbread if it is sweet. Hate the coarse, salty stuff that my MIL from SC prefers, and I'm pretty sure she hates the sweet stuff that I make!

I prefer almost everything homemade. I grew up with homemade food and bought food usually has an off taste, I swear it's the preservatives in it, or just a side effect of mass production.
In a perfect world I would make everything myself, but golly time just doesn't allow it. I love homemade pie crust but don't think I'd ever make my own tart shells. It's way too easy to buy a big box of shells from costco and call it a day.
Croutons are another thing that I prefer homemade but usually buy because of time issues.
I'm hoping to go back to being more of a Susie homemaker once our home in the country is complete. I've always said I was born in the wrong time era, I love the idea of a slower life where people were homesteaders and not much else.

Scrapintoee, I use both jiffy corn bread and yellow cake mix to make my cornbread and it is yummy. Close enough to scratch for me.

Milk. It is so not worth getting up to milk the cows, carry in the pail, pour in containers and refrigerate. Just kidding I would so do this. It would be worth it. I would have a cow for a pet and it would give me a nice gift. Just like the chickens!

I used to have a bread machine onion bread that I'd toast for croutons. It was the best ever. It only took about 2 hours for the bread and then a few hours for the croutons. I'd forgotten how much I loved those. I prefer homemade for most things. My parents didn't do much cooking from scratch when I was little. Jarred sauces, shake and bake, and canned veggies topped the menu. Bland was the main ingredient. I think that's why I prefer cooking from scratch as an adult. I can't make pie crust or chocolate pie. I prefer yellow cake from a box but other flavors from scratch. I'm intimidated by sauces and soups for some reason, so even when I do them at home, there's usually at least some store bought component. I've never tried to make cheese or yogurt. I did try to make ketchup once and it was the nastiest thing ever. DH likes scratch brownies, but only his mom's recipe. It's super cake my and not very chocolatey. I like a fudgey brownie, or peanut butter brownies. It's not worth the time to make two batches. And I definitely don't need two batches lying around waiting for me to eat them. Mostly I don't have time to make all the things from scratch that I'd like to. Also, with sweets (like the brownies), if I make them from scratch, I have a whole batch tempting me. If I buy one single serving, it's one and done, temptation doesn't last for a week. It's safer sometimes to go to the diner for pie instead of making one (even if mine is better). I like Paula Deen's cornbread. It's like what my grandma used to make.

I make the Amish White Bread from allrecipes.com several times a year. Sometimes I do rolls and other times I just make loaves because it's quicker. DH love-love-LOVES to make sandwiches out of that bread especially with leftover turkey on Thanksgiving! Try it, it's amazing. I can't believe how fast that bread disappears! I take shortcuts with box mixes too sometimes (and when I do I usually doctor them up) but I really prefer stuff when it's made from scratch.

I would have to say Brownies. Now that we have Costco here I buy the big box of Ghiradelli that has about 6 pouches in it. The kids love it and it is so easy.
ETA: I see I'm not the only one Merge ! My dd agrees with brownies. She's made them from scratch and a box and scratch just isn't worth it to her

Thanks, YooHoot! What brand do you buy? I used to love heating the homemade ones up straight on the burners on a gas stove. However, I now have a flat top stove. Lisa I buy raw Tortilla Land tortillas from Costco, 2 packs of 25 per bag. I put one in the freezer. It says not to freeze but I've never had a problem. We go through one or 2 bags per month. I have also seen them in regular grocery stores.

Tomato sauce... I won't buy spaghetti sauce but it's not worth cooking fresh tomatoes into sauce from scratch unless I have I hae a boatload of tomatoes (which I never do). I love jiffy cornbread too. Fresh sourdough from a starter is delicious but I never could keep up with feeding it. Fresh salsa is totally worth it, though. I made my own tomato sauce from scratch one year, and I totally agree with you that it was not worth it! Lots of time, lots of mess, nothing special.

Once upon a time I was considering giving puff pastry a go, then I happen to watch a Jamie Oliver cookery programme where he announced to camera that puff pastry was a faff to make and buying the fresh/frozen premade stuff from the shops was perfectly alright. Guess who still has never made puff pastry

Oh, so many things I could list here. Pie crust, spaghetti sauce, most salad dressings….. Big kudos to those who love to spend time in the kitchen. I've spent years wishing I were one of you, but I'm coming to peace with who I am. I cook, and I think I cook well, and a good amount of it is from scratch, but I'm really just not that into it. Very well said. I married into a family of remarkable cooks and tried to compete with my MIL and SIL for too long. I have other talents and I work on fostering those skills. Fortunately DH is satisfied with what meager fare comes from my kitchen.

Brownies. We like the Ghirardelli triple chocolate from a box better than anything I've ever made from scratch. Strongly agree. This is my go to mix. And they are close to $2 a box in my area, which I think is a steal.

I do make some of the things mentioned in this thread like pizza, salsa, bread, noodles for soup. But ketchup?? I don't know a single person who makes their own ketchup.

carrot cake. I had volunteered to bring it to a function, and then almost couldn't find a box mix. I was looking up a recipe on my phone at the store, and it had like 20 ingredients/steps and there was no way in hell. thankfully I found a hidden box.

There are things I'm willing to make from scratch but I just do not have the kitchen space for it!
I like making bread from scratch but in this kitchen, it's either frozen dough or just buy the damn bread.
If it's batter, I usually prefer to make it from scratch.
Dressing, condiments, sauce, pasta, pie crust, anything that requires a fryer or more than a 2 feet of counter space I have is just easier to buy.
DH would probably argue that sometimes, it's just easier to buy the beer instead of making it. He has had many batches that didn't taste very good, but he has had a couple that were really good.

Mine too. Now it depends on what I am doing-I either buy the premade frozen ones or the the refrigerated sheets. I had a recipe one time that made a shortbread like crust that was really really good, but promptly lost the little scrap of paper I wrote it down on and that was pretty much the end of my pie making attempts. I don't like jarred spaghetti sauces because they all tend to be too sweet or too chunky. But I am don't like to make the sauce myself and usually start with Hunts spaghetti sauce in the can. The garlic and herb version is pretty much a lightly seasoned tomato sauce-makes it easy to doctor up. But brownies? I have an easy recipe that ends up tasting similar to the box mix and I can throw in chocolate chunks or nuts if I want. It is my go to 'quick, I need to make something RIGHT now' recipe (it takes almost the same amount of time as the box) and the end results are really good.

I have made just about everything from scratch, including condiments (ketchup, mayo, bbq sauce, salad dressing) but I don't routinely do that right now. Mostly it's because I try to eat very little processed sugar and a ton of ingredients, and so many things come with too much of that in them. The homemade ketchup is the real stinker, though, and fortunately I have found Heinz low sugar ketchup readily available at one of my regular stores.

@scrubologist : have you tried Westbrae Natural Unsweetened Ketchup? The nutrition info is 1 tbsp = 5 calories, 0g fat, 1g carbohydrate , 0g protein and less than 1g sugar. It's amazingly good and well worth looking for (I get it at Whole Foods but lots of places carry it). HTH

So many many things. Life is too short ITA! I felt different when I was a SAHM and my whole day could revolve around cooking and prepping for meals, and dreaming of fun new dishes to try. Now, all the fun is sucked out of cooking & baking because it has become just another chore I have to do around my work schedule. Yep, all of that...but still enjoy made-from-scratch cake and frosting (preferably cream cheese!).

All of you claiming your love of boxed brownies really need to try Kami's recipe! I seriously have not bought a mix in 8 years. (I only know that date because she shared the recipe right before my son was born) With birthday cakes I usually use a box mix and homemade icing, especially for little kids who tend to only eat the icing anyway. We like the Costco pesto too!

lucyg one try at pumpkin pie was enough for me! I don't even really like it. That one attempt was made when I was a young bride trying to impress my new husband. He managed to choke down quite a few things with a smile on his face. Thinking back, it's crazy how proud he was of me for trying. "Wow I have a real wife!" He always always made a point to thank me for dinner, especially trying to model for our complaining kids, whether it was something special or just spaghetti from a box with sauce from a jar.
