My daughter will be graduating from HS and has picked a laptop as her gift. Only thing is, she insists she wants windows 7. Is it better to find a laptop with windows 7 or would it be better/easier to just get a laptop with win10 (way more choices) and buy a windows 7 disk? We want to spend around $500.

Windows 7 is very old now. She won't be able to get up to date programs, nor do things she will be required to do in college with that OS.
Has she chosen a college? You may want to wait until she does that. They may have requirements for her. Our dd goes to a college where each student is given a laptop to use throughout their time at the University.
Now, even though they are given one we got her a Mac. She uses that for class and it was good until she had a class that had different requirements.

I know that you can still get laptops with Windows 7 installed as that is what replaced Windows XP for businesses. I don't know if they still sell them in the stores though. I know that Dell will sell a system with Windows 7 installed. I am sure other companies probably do as well. Thing is, you would have to ask about the install of Windows 7.

A lot of businesses use it as it replaced Windows XP. They recently converted all the computers at my work to Windows 7. So, it's still pretty "new" here. ;-)

I would really encourage her to go over to the dark side and Windows 10. My kid did and it took them about a week and then they were comfortable with it.
All the colleges that DS looked at had an IT department that worked on students computers at no cost. Fabulous support when kids need their computers for everything! I'd check to make sure they support Windows 7--surely in 4 years, she would need that perk.

That's interesting that it can still be purchased. I'd be very concerned to get something that is older given how fast technology changes.

It's not that surprising considering how many issues Win 10 had when it was released last year. I'm still running into problems. I know many many people who are still staying with win 7 until win 10 has stabilized. It works fine with the software people use. I agree with checking the college requirements. My daughter's school also had great IT help available.

Thanks everyone! I let her know what you all said and she's willing to try windows 10 first (her brother has it on the desktop he built so he can help her out). If needed I can buy a win7 disk and downgrade eventually.
Most of the win7 laptops I've found are refurbished or business laptops (which seem to cost a lot more).

I went from an XP to Win 10. It was a learning curve, but I managed. I bought a Dell through Costco.com.
