lovegrowswild.com/2014/09/beef-bacon-baked-beans/We went to a cookout at a friend's yesterday - small group, 5 adults, 3 teens. I made this dish for the first time and y'all, it is excellent! There was not a bean left in the pot, everyone raved over it. The things I changed were that I used Great Northern white beans instead of Lima because I hate Lima beans for some reason, and I only used about 1/4 of a small onion because I also despise onions but use them for the benefit others. I did the crockpot version and may have splashed a little beer in once or twice when I came in from working in the yard. It is MUST try, the kids are still talking about it today.

Thanks - I'm always looking for a great baked bean dish.
I think I might have just the occasion to try it this week.

MMM looks good. I had a Great-Aunt that ALWAYS made this dish for summer picnics. I loved them. Don't know why I never make them myself. I think I will need to make some. Thanks for sharing

That's really similar to the calico beans recipe from my hometown church cookbook. I usually just make them on the 4th of July and they always go over well. I always shortcut the bacon and used the bag of precooked stuff you find in the salad dressing section of the grocery store. We're having people over for dinner at the lake this weekend. I should make them.

I've used virtually that same recipe for years only the cookbook I got it from called them "Best of the West Baked Beans." It is a sure crowd pleaser. And very filling on its own!

It is what my husband requests every time we have company or go to a pot luck. My nephew ate too many of them years ago and they gave him the worst gas on a 12 hour car ride home.

That sounds delicious, but more like a main dish than a side dish!

We got this recipe from our neighbor lady at the lake who had been making it for probably 50 years! It is SO good! We always make a huge crockpot full, and it always ends up empty. Everybody raves about it!

I won $100 in a national cooking contest (I think it was an honorable mention) back around 1982 for a very similar recipe. So delish. Hers looks a little dry, though ... mine was saucier. I must still have the recipe around here somewhere but I haven't made it in years. Just sort of forgot about it, I guess. Thanks for posting this!

Those look really good. I thought that baked beans were always made with a certain kind of bean. I don't even know what bean they're made from. I do like great Northern beans and pintos. I do also like lima beans, but I like the baby ones you get fresh or frozen, not the dried ones. My mom always just dressed up Van Camp's Pork and Beans. She'd add ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, molasses, and a bit of bacon. If she was just making these for a side dish for our meal, she'd just microwave them. For a cookout, etc. she'd bake them. I've never thought of putting ground beef in the beans. I do like them with bbq sauce. The ones that Smithfield's bbq makes are really good--they put their special bbq sauce in it. Their bbq sauce is very vinegary and spicy (their bbq chicken is the best), which is great with the sweetness of the beans. My dh always gets their baked beans as a side with his pulled pork dinner. Their potato salad is horrible. Dh forgot what sides I like when he got me a bbq pork plate and got me the potato salad last week. It was so horrible I had to spit it out. Just mushy and gross. (we always get the slaw as the other side-- their dinners are so large we make bbq pork sandwiches with the leftovers) I love dried beans. 13 bean soup is a favourite--with kielbasa. I sub black eyed peas when I can't find the 13 bean mix. It's really great with the kielbasa, chopped onions, and hot sauce. Has anyone tried Rancho Gordo beans? I've heard that they're wonderful, but I keep forgetting to order some. I could try these baked bean recipes with some of the beans--with just dh and I, I don't want to make a humongous pot of pintos or great Northerns. The only beans that I wouldn't mind eating a huge pot of would be lentils and black eyed peas. I also really want to try Yvonne's refried beans.
