My first day back to WW the leader told us all about simple start. When I said "so how do I count points?" she said "That's something you'll learn later" (even though you need to count points for the extra 49 points a week).
So I'm losing weight but I'm really not counting points so in a way, I'm really not "doing weight watchers". I'll keep doing what I'm doing but sometimes I feel like I need to count and I don't know how!
My leader's kind of a dud.

Did they tell you how many PP you should be eating per day or did they not do that since they are starting everyone off with Simple Start?
The minimum number of points you eat per day depends on your starting weight, but the minimum is 26, plus the extra 49 points you get each week. The receptionist will tell you your minimum points if you ask. You can calculate a food's points value by using the Pocket Guide, the book you can buy at the center (which you really don't need), or looking things up on eTools. There is a calculator on eTools, and also on the iPhone and iPad apps. You can also buy a little plastic calculator at the center if you prefer that method.
Did you get any program materials at all, or just the simple start booklet?

When you first join WW, they want you to try Simply Filling before you start counting points. With Simply Filling, you just eat Power Foods. Click here for a list: Power Foods You don't have to measure or count any points for power foods. Just eat reasonable portion sizes. When you are satisfied, stop eating. On Simply Filling, you get 7 points plus per day. These points are for NON-power foods. Like, if you cook your veggies in olive oil, you measure your oil and count those points plus. If you put butter on your baked potato, you measure/count the points plus for the butter. AFter trying this for a week or so, they will teach you to incorporate other foods (NON-power foods) and how to track the points plus values. If you have other questions, please ask! I'll be happy to help if I can!

[HASH]61redhead -thanks! I'm wanting to start counting points without going to meetings. I know I could just suck it up and pay for the online subscription, which I may do if I think I will stick to it!

@pink_Mochas - The online tools are pretty awesome! They have a recipe builder, where you can enter your recipe and calculate the points plus value per serving. There is a list of brand name items with Pts + values. There is a list of restaurant menus with pts + values. It is a really good tool!
You would probably start out with 26 pts + per day. That is the average of most of the people in my group. Lean meats are about 1 pt + per ounce. Like a 3 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast baked/broiled/grilled with no oil would be 3 pts +. Almost all fruits and veggies are 0 pts +.

I've essentially been doing simply filling for 8 weeks. I got my materials and my points allowance but no one taught me how to count those points or when that point value changes.

freebird - did you get the e-tools with your membership? Your Pts + daily allowance will change as you lose weight. If you have E-tools, you can look up the pts + values, or they should have given you a guide in your meeting.

The pts + values of foods is calculated using fats/carbs/fiber/protein. In the e=tools or mobile app, there is a calculator where you can plug in those four values for any package you pick up in the grocery store to calculate the Pts + value per serving. There is also a barcode scanner that will give you the pts + value when you scan the barcode.

My leader's kind of a dud. Your weekly point total should be on the sticker they put in your book. Then you can look up points either on line, from the books they have or you can look them up on the website. Are you doing the monhly pass? If you are then you can use the WW app or the online tools. They also have a little calculator you can buy if you aren't doing the monthly pass that you can figure points with if you know nutritional information. She should be doing the follow up the simple start session after every meeting where she could go over the point system with you.

Our leader is very open to individual questions - she will meet with members after she does the newcomer mtg, or invites you to attend that mtg and ask then.

I've essentially been doing simply filling for 8 weeks. I got my materials and my points allowance but no one taught me how to count those points or when that point value changes. The sticker in your book should tell you how many points you are allotted on a daily basis. Are you doing the monthly pass? If so, you have access to eTools as well - which will have a bar code scanner and a point calculator to help figure out points. If you are paying week to week, you'll need to buy the little hand held calculator that's like $5 or something. That way you can calculate points from the food labels (Fat, Carbs, Fiber and Protien). If you choose not to buy that, you'll have to use the little green book that came in your welcome kit and use "generic" points. But please don't think you aren't "really doing WW" because you aren't counting points. The Simple Start/Simply Filling program IS Weight Watchers. It's for people who don't want to count foods - and is more about eating less processed foods - more whole foods, fruits, veggies, etc. If you really want to count points, corner your leader and force her to help you. That's what you're paying for! Do you have options on meetings? Maybe try to change, if you can, and find a different leader. Sometimes it's not possible - but I will be honest, the Leader makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in meetings to me! If you don't relate to the meeting, or the group, you won't stick most likely. I finally found a Leader (actually 3) that I really like, and the main meeting I go to has a core group of people who come every week! It's fun! Good luck, and hang in there - it does work (I'm down 50+ lbs).

50lbs is awesome tracylynn! I stopped going to WW 10lbs short of my goal weight and I'm finding my old eating habits creeping back in. Thing is, I got braces recently and a lot of my favorite *go to* snack foods are hard for me to eat now. Salads, air popcorn, raw almonds - can't eat em anymore.

That is a definitely a bummer about the snacks. I have my go-to snacks as well, so I completely understand!! Good luck, you can do this!

The WW android app is so easy! You can scan barcode and it will tell you how many points it is, and you can add it to your log from there.

I've had braces and so have my kids; we have all eaten salad. I've never heard that you shouldn't eat salad with braces. For the record, we ate popcorn too. You just have to be careful not to eat pieces with the hard kernels that didn't pop all the way.

My leader's kind of a dud. The leader should have explained all this to you when you asked. Sounds like she is not all the great at her job. Did you get the monthly pass where you subscribe to etools? Etools is an excellent resource! But if you didn't, here are a few websites that might help explain it better for you: link 1

I eat a lot of fruit, popcorn, I usually have a box of WW Snack Bars handy just in case. Probably not much help to you! Edit - Oh, hard boiled eggs and cheese sticks as well!

Thanks ladies for the help. I do have etools. It's kind of a PITA to have my phone there ALL the time to count points. I miss the old days of the "slide". Plus my scanner on my phone doesn't work for crap. Grr. I need a new phone. The sticker on my weigh in only tells me my first points value, but they've never updated it again. Which I see is off by one since I've lost enough weight. Yes, my leader is kind of a dud. My group is nothing but little old ladies, me and one girl that's about 24.

I don't like eating lettuce or broccoli around people because I'm afraid of having green bits in my teeth. I do have it at home occasionally when I have immediate access to a toothbrush and a water pick.

My points on the sticker last week was off by one compared to etools last week, but it corrected itself this week.
