DD is going away to college this fall (about 100 miles away so, not far). She's always had our Lucy and we think would really benefit from having a pet all her own - cats are really independent and we think would work well with her life in college. She's going to have 5 roommates (who all ADORE cats) so there will likely be a lot of coming and going, they'll be in a house, she's sharing one of the bedrooms with a good friend, the cats will live in there with her and the rest of the house during the day. They are sister kitties and are coming to our house in about two weeks (they'll be about 6 weeks old at that point). I hate cats, but kittens are adorable. I also realize there's a big possibility that I'll end up with said cats so...I'll be getting used to that idea, lol. We think, due to past behaviors around kittens, Lucy may try to adopt them. If she does, and DD winds up taking them with her, we'll probably get her a kitten all her own. There's also the possibility she'll try to eat them. In which case we have a secure set up to keep kitties and Lucy separated until the move. So, not worried about that. It has been 20 years since I've been around a cat and that cat was old and trained. I haven't had a kitten since I was fiver years old in the North Idaho woods so, training wasn't really necessary. I've been reading up online and absorbing all the basic advice, but was just wondering from experienced cat people (as I am not one) what don't I know to think about or ask about? Thank you. Hopefully Lucy will love them...I'm dying to get pictures of that!

What do you need to know about kittens? I think you answered your own question there

Have several scratching options available (cardboard, carpet, rope-covered) and show the kitten to use them immediately and frequently. If you have long drapes, take them down - it can't end well, otherwise. Do not allow a kitten to scratch ANY furniture or carpet just because it's old - they can't tell the difference and you'll be upset when they scratch new replacements. A tired kitten is a calm kitten, so play, play, play with it!
