It's actually a diagnose my kid post, lol. He's 23, normally healthy, into fitness, etc. Is out of state part of the year working. While there he got sick, ended up in the walk-in type clinic on a Friday night (going on 4 weeks ago now.) He's not been the type to complain about illness/injury so this concerned me. The symptoms he mentioned were lightheaded/dizziness along with his stomach was upset. Clinic said virus, did an EKG but that is about it and sent him on his way. His symptoms didn't subside much and he was down and out for most of a week. He returned slowly to things, but still complained he didn't feel himself. He never returned to workouts (unusual). Seemed like the stomach part may have been being caused by the dizziness, but just a guess?! There was mention that the flu had been going around and someone told him he had the symptoms people were describing, BUT he can't confirm that nor did he have any symptoms other than what i've said and they don't seem to be the usual flu symptoms. So he returns home, makes an appt with his MD. MD tries to recreate how the lightheadedness occurs says he thinks he's just slow to recover from probably a virus and tells him to give it a month and see him again if things aren't better He's completely frustrated, says he'd be ok with a little lightheadedness if he were to go to stand up, but this can happen when he's still. This is his main complaint at this point other than the seeming fatigue that is going with it. He'll go mow the lawn or go to the gym and he's exhausted and completely annoyed by this. I'm very surprised the MD didn't at least do some bloodwork on him. So does anyone want to toss some ideas at me. Could it be inner ear and how would they tell (they've looked in his ears, but nothing odd.) It would seem he had some sort of illness the way it came on....but at this point i'm wondering about things like anemia? Doesn't really fit mono, but.... I'm also surprised given the area we live and his occupation that they didn't test for lyme. Am I overlooking things? His blood pressure is fine, been checked. He's completely frustrated by how he feels and I think even more so that he feels brushed off about his symptoms. Plus he has a job lined up so he really needs to be feeling well. He keeps complaining to me, i've told him to insist on bloodwork, but other than that i'm not sure what to tell him anymore.

How about trying a couple days of rest and fluids? Maybe he just can't kick the virus unless he give his body a chance. If that does not help, he can go back to his doc with more info. He could even keep a diary of when it happens relative to foods and activities and look for patterns.
Was he checked for an ear infection or inner ear problems? Disturbances in the inner ear can cause dizziness and nausea. Maybe a visit to an ENT?

I'd have blood pressure checked. Perhaps he needs to get a second opinion.

Does the dizziness and upset stomach happen all day or just in the morning?

There have been some exhausting bugs for us the last few years. Maybe it is just a thing... But Ménière's disease can be tiring. I too suggest a visit to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist.
Strange they didn't run blood work on him, can he return to his regular doctor and ask?

I was going to say vertigo too. My sister had it last year and the constant dizziness was debilitating.

I'd need more blood work results to comment. Something is not right. I'd rule out heart first and start looking at labs as a process of elimination.

Thanks everyone, you've given me some things to consider and will ask him a few questions. Seems it came on suddenly as illness, but he's just not recovering. ENT recommendations are good...i'll suggest that to him as an option.
And yes, the strangest thing to me is that they haven't run any blood tests on him. Seems like a very easy way to rule out a whole lot of maybe's.
Will talk to him today, think he's particularly frustrated that the MD didn't seem to take him as seriously as he'd like to be taken.

Walking pneumonia? The fatigue sounds like when I had this.

Have them check for POTS, which someone mentioned above. It is debilitating, my girlfriend was diagnosed with it two years ago. It's been hell for her, but she is finally on a medicine that is helping with her blood pressure.
Be the squeaky wheel and go with him if he needs support/help. Good luck!

Benign positional vertigo fits those symptoms and can go on for a long time. Maybe he could take some dramamine and see if it improves.

We saw this last year with our dd. She went on an antihistamine for a wk. Took one every day, and it finally went away. I think Dr's tend to rule on the lighter side, vs get all overly excited about something that will go away on it's own, esp in someone so young. 4 wks is awhile though. I would try the antihistamine and see if that does anything. What does he have to lose, and follow up with ENT.

It can take a while to get over a virus, but I agree it sounds like something is of. Definitely ask for some blood tests.

Sounds exactly like when I had Vertigo!! For some people, it is over quickly and for others a long time. Mine lasted several months. I have a friend who still gets it off and on for about 10 years now. She has medication she takes when she has an episode and it helps. The stomach part comes from the dizziness.

I have POTS as mentioned twice up thread. I just want to clarify that dizziness and lightheaded can happen with the slightest change in position.
The best check for this is to get a blood pressure machine and monitor his pressure when he changes position. By this I mean check it while sitting, should be normal, then have him recline just 45 degrees and retest. Keep doing that until you see what it's doing at every position. If it's POTS his pressure will likely become very low at some point.
Praying it's not POTS and just vertigo or something ENT related that can be fixed.

I was thinking pneumonia as well-the earliest symptoms I had were extreme fatigue and really bad stomach pain

He needs bloodwork run on him. Just some basics to start with. This could be as simple as a virus he is having trouble clearing or it could be more serious. Basic bloodwork will give some easy answers right away- is he anemic? Does he have an infection brewing? Is his SED rate high, indicative of inflammation somewhere?

My vertigo was caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency and low iron. I'm really surprised they didn't run any blood work.

Is he dizzy/lightheaded (feeling faint, sense of movement inside his head) or does he have vertigo (sense that his surroundings are moving; can be a spinning sensation, or feel like walking on a boat in choppy water)? If it's the latter, have him try meclizine, which is available over the counter as the less-drowsy motion sickness medication. Vertigo can occur for all kinds of reasons, and can stick around for a long time. Meclizine can help with the symptoms.
There are maneuvers that can be done to help with some kinds of vertigo. Epley maneuvers are just one kind. If you look online you can find lots of info, including ways to do it oneself, without having to go to a dr or physical therapist. It's worth looking into.
I also wonder about anemia, which could cause fatigue and dizzinesss; and mono, which can cause profound fatigue. I don't understand why his dr didn't at least do bloodwork to check for these two disorders.
