I posted yesterday that I was getting a cold sore and was looking for suggestions on treatment. I then went to Walmart to buy abreva but the line to pay was huge and I needed to get to work. So later I went to target. Bought what I thought was their version of abreva but later realized it isn't the same ingredients. I emailed my dr to see if he could prescribe something because by that time I knew it wasn't going to be pretty. He asked if I had tried abreva. I said I had in the past but it didn't do much. He now says he sent a prescription to target. I'm wondering if it is too late to do any good? Right now my whole top lip is full of cold sores. Not just one, several. I would like to help them heal faster but don't know if it will do any good at this point?

It might help them dry up faster, vs blister and weep. I usually try to take my med's at the earlies tingle. Just a tingle and I take it, and I don't blister, but just a dry area. If I don't take it right away, I usually get a blister, but it doesn't take a full week to heal, it drys up a bit faster. You might be too far past that stage though.

I'm not sure if he is prescribing a pill or cream but if it's a pill and are there side effects? I have some spots that are blistered and other spots that are swollen but I don't know if it will turn into a blister or not.

If it is Acyclovir it probably won't stop it but it should help it heal faster.

I have no side affects with the pills. The cream didn't really help me like it has others.

I swear by the pills. I was having problems with getting cold sores any time I was tired or stressed. About six months ago I started taking a pill daily (at the recommendation of my doctor) haven't had one since. They are amazing and I haven't noticed any side effects. The one time I forgot to fill my prescription I had a cold store 48 hours after the last pill I took. I was stressed and it popped right up.

Yea, I swear by the pill form also. Creams don't do a thing for me. You can have a side effect with any pill. What exactly are you worried about? to me, the minor side effects and not having a full blown cold sore are WELL worth it!! I take Valtrex.

I'm just wondering about side effects in general. When I had one of my kids, I broke out with cold sores like I have now. When I had the next one I asked about a prescription to be Proactive with it and I thought the doctor said that there were side effects or something else that detracted me from trying it.

Now that I think of it, I think it was really expensive when I inquired about it before. I just got the prescription filled and it was only $5. The pharmacist seemed like this is a high dose--2 tablets twice a day. Does that seem standard? I wish they would give refills in case I need it again.

I am sorry that you have broken out this badly. They really hurt!

If it's the generic Valtrex then that's the dose. 2 pills 2 X a day for 2 days is my dose.

That is probably right for you since yours are so bad right now. I have always taken the cream Zovirax and this time my doctor gave me the valtrex pill. It worked wonders and I was so pleasantly surprised at how quickly it worked.
Good luck to you!

I hate cold sores so much that I would take anything that I could that would bring the process to a halt, even if it shaved just minutes off of the misery embarrassment.
I've had a prescription for Valtrex for almost 2 years now and I carry it with me at all times. Of course, I haven't had a cold sore since. It figures, right? This is the longest I've gone without one-- though I did take some of the meds when I thought I was getting one. Nothing ever really happened. Was it the meds working, or was it not a cold sore in the first place. I'll never know.

Three days after my first post on this thread, I woke up with two cold sores forming on my bottom lip. Ugh. I took my 4 Valtrex pills today and I am hoping that they are better in the morning. I didn't even feel the tingle before hand, but I have also been taking percocet all weekend for pain from my uterine ablation.
Stupid stress. My husband is in Kansas City for the next three months and we will only see each other every three weeks. He is having trouble finding a room so he is still in the craphole Extended Stay. I had to have my ablation when he was not here. My body stressed out from the pain of the ablation.

I'm sorry to hear that you are so stressed and that you have cold sores now, too. My cold sores are mostly in that dry, scaly stage now. I wish there was something to make that phase to faster as well. Looks so bad and it painful. Also embarrassing when it starts bleeding randomly if the skin pulls off.

Abreva doesn't work for me and Valtrex needs to be taken the first day to work. Peppermint oil from Whole Foods works better than Valtrex and can speed up healing of existing outbreaks. If you have more than one cold sore, it's because you reinfected yourself. You should be drinking from a straw and not smearing chapstick/lipstick all over your lip spreading the disease from one side to the next. But if you do, be sure to clean your lipstick immediately. I just read an article yesterday that the virus can remain on your lipstick for up to two weeks, this article was in regards to trying on lipsticks in Sephora. Wash your pillowcase once it's gone.

I can't take the Rx meds for cold sores but I do take L-Lysine. It stops you from getting them.
Here's some info from webmd: Lysine is an amino acid (building block of protein). People use it to make medicine. Lysine is used for preventing and treating cold sores (caused by the virus called herpes simplex labialis). It is taken by mouth or applied directly to the skin for this use. LYSINE: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD WebMD › vitamins › ingredientmono-237
I take it every day and have not had a break out in years.
Giod luck and I hope they heal quickly!
