I found this today as I was going through some of my grandma's things. It was written by my great grandma Lucy Rutledge Scott. It's her father's account of President Lincoln's funeral procession.
For those who don't know Ann Mayes Rutledge was actually engaged to President Lincoln but she died before they were able to wed. I am also related to brothers John James Rutledge and Edward Rutledge. One signed the Declaration of Independence and the other the Constitution. Here is the letter from my great grandma:
My father was William A. Rutledge. His father was Washington D. Rutledge and a cousin of Ann Mayes Rutledge. They all lived in Springfield, Illinois.
In a letter my father wrote to me on February 27, 1942, several years before he died, he told of Abraham Lincoln's funeral as he remembered it occurred when he was ten years old. The following is a portion of that letter:
"At the time of Lincoln's death, when I was ten years old, I lived next door t the Lincoln home in a rented cottage. I remember well the Lincoln funeral. It was just after the Civil war and soldiers from all over the United States came to the funeral bringing their tents, muskets, and bayonets. They were tented in and around Springfield, Illinois. The funeral procession was over two miles long, with soldiers marching four abreast carrying their muskets and bayonets. They had him buried before the rear end of the procession had started marching.
I saw President Lincoln four times as he lay in the old State House, and I attempted to see him the fifth time when I slipped in ahead of an old woman who boxed my ears and threw me out of the line. I concluded I had seen enough, and stopped."

That is a fun piece of history! I really like the part about how he concluded he had seen enough of President Lincoln after the old woman boxed his ears!

What a treasured document you've found. Take very good care of it as I'm sure you will. So many people just toss things when they are clearing out after old people and your find is proof that it's well worth looking through everything.
