I'd have thought he was probably the decoy - the guy who 'encourages' security to follow while his buddies help themselves to as much as they can!! Yes, I worked retail when I was a student and the tactics were the same then!

The most disturbing thing that has happened to me at Target was Wednesday when someone *stole* my cart with my bags in it. ETA: My cart was empty except for my shopping bags.

Thanks all for the variety of replies. What I did: exchanged a raised eyebrow look with another woman nearby and went back to shopping. But I saw several others hurriedly put their stuff down and leave, which made me re-think my decision. We stayed in the store a while longer and nothing bad happened, so I feel justified. But I wondered what others here would do. I wonder how many of us answered based on the fact we have our own teenagers who fashion sense is some what suspect...? I live with a kid who wears a hoodie almost all year round-including the middle of summer in Florida because inside is ALWAYS cold. (I tote around a sweater myself.) Seeing a teen in a coat wouldn't have done more than raise an eyebrow (the same one I do with my own kid.)

^^^ oh, wait-- cadoodlebug, I thought you meant someone just "drove off" with your cart accidentally for a minute or two but that you got it back! Did they actually steal your stuff?? that's horrible!!

My first thought would likely be 'weird' and then would have thought that maybe he just watched 'Straight Out of Compton,' was listening to the soundtrack and emulating the the look. I figure anyone who stands out from the ordinary like that already has a lot of security eyes on him/her.

When I turned around, my cart was gone. So just the bags were stolen.

When I turned around, my cart was gone. So just the bags were stolen. That still sucks. First the bags had value. Second some places charge a bag fee or tax. It would seriously piss me off to have someone steal my bags AND have to pay 15 cents each for bags needed at check out. Sorry that happened to you.

Would have shaken my head in disbelieve and probably started singing the song in my head. This is a major song by NWA that caused some huge controversy. Dr. Dre did not even want to put this song on the LP, but after he and Eazy-E were harassed by the LAPD for shooting paintball guns, he changed his tune. If you want the history of the song and what it caused in the country in the 80's here you go. History of Song What I find funny is that Ice Cube (Member of NWA then went solo) is now a huge actor in movies geared towards kids.

Probably what ilove buble did, move to another department and roll my eyes. It's a song, pretty famous. A rescue cat guy I follow recently got slammed on Instagram for posting a picture of 4 hood cats lounging around an animal control truck with the caption "f the police". People were up in arms saying it was anti police- but ffs, it's feral cats around an animal control truck and the song is totally apropos and again ffs, it is cats! It's a song. A famous song. Back packs can be full of bombs and guns but usually aren't. I live in land of no target though and I desperately miss it, so there is that. I'd brave Isis to shop at target! Not even hyperbole. Not to hijack, but I know your pain. We were stationed at Yongsan for 2 years. For weeks before we moved back to the states, I had the same dream. I was in Target with my shopping cart piled high, kicking my heels in the air, telling DH, "I'm getting it all!" That and parking. I'd dream that I would park, then back up and go to another empty spot, just because I could. There was no parking there and it only got worse after the 9-11 improvements. I can remember asking a neighbor traveling to the states to bring me back bandaids. For some reason, they were never in stock.

I'm pretty sure that's a song. I feel like I heard it in some random movie once.
Anywho, we'd have probably left the store. No point in taking chances.

Okay, I'm sorry, but I still don't understand what everyone's so worried about. The world is full of annoying teenagers with obnoxious music. Do you people really leave stores and check for exits every time one walks in? How do you function in the world?
My money is on he was coming to work, or else he just wanted to use the rest room.

I believe you posted about that Trader Joes bag from Boston - because I didn't know that was a 'thing.' That really does suck. I take the 'subway' into downtown, and the loud cussy rap sing-a-long is a daily occurrence. If I saw this happen at Target, I wouldn't bat an eyelash, though I know tons of others who would really be bothered by it.

FWIW that sounds like every day I used public transportation in Chicago in the 90s, lol Public transportation was one of my first thoughts when I read the OP. I was thinking that he was probably on his way from somewhere or to somewhere and didn't come in his own car, leaving him no choice but to bring his pack in with him. Now whether he was dropped off by a bus, taxi, or a friend, who knows, but the general idea of him not having his own vehicle in the lot was the main point of my thought process. It could be anything, though. Some women waltz around with bags the size of small luggage and no one bats an eye. They could have a mini armory in some of the bags I see around! We have this idea in our heads that women need to carry everything but the kitchen sink with them at all times, but for some reason a guy just needs his wallet. I'm not sure why that is.

There was something different about this guy. For one, he was older - maybe mid 20s - and two, there was something very angry and purposeful in his demeanor. A random kid happily rapping his way down the aisle wouldn't even have attracted my attention. As I said, I didn't leave the store. But I did find his demeanor and choice of song - in that place and time - disturbing. The jacket and bag were concerning in the context of the way he was acting.

I am shocked at the number of people who say "better safe than sorry" and run away when someone a little different rolls through. Also, I didn't notice from your OP anything about him seeming "angry and purposeful." That may have changed my answer. Is it there? If not, then I stand by my response that some peas' answers constitute an over-reaction. ETA just checked ... you said he walked "quickly and purposefully" to the back of the store. That's where I got the impression he was arriving for work OR needed to use the rest room. I didn't get "angry" from your description.

I'm just thinking through it as I consider others' responses, wondering why I felt disturbed by him, and it came to me that he seemed angry. Maybe because he was rapping an angry song. I live in a diverse urban area, and teach kids who look just like that guy did. I am NOT one to be frightened just by the sight of someone different. I guess I wanted to examine my own response and see if my own attitude needed adjusting.

OK I have to be honest here..... If I was in the US and I saw someone as described in the OP I would probably shit myself and leave immediately. I would jump to the (possibly ridiculous) conclusion that he was carrying a gun under the big jacket or in the backpack. There are just too many mass shootings in your country for me to feel safe around a someone like the man Merge described. You can all scoff at me if you want, I don't mind!

I say trust your instincts. If you feel something is off, then walk away and/or leave the store. I've seen people act like that and they are fairly harmless. I've also seen people who act like that and they are looking for a confrontation. To judge others who choose to leave is unfair because you don't know what personal experiences they may have had that would cause them to have that type of a reaction.

Wouldn't even be a blip on my radar. I'm quite sure we have the NWA CD that has that song on it somewhere in my house. Plus, I live in Seattle. Sir Mix a Lot speaks about it on one of his old songs-"The girls got on bikinis - he got a fur coat on. What the f#%k is the weather like in Seattle?"
People wear randomly inappropriate clothing for the weather a lot around here.
