And DS (19), was our guide! He's been training as a guide and got certified for full fledged work yesterday with us as his inaugural run! Actually, he got certified AFTER our run, as he was being watched from other TL's from boats and the shore. He was STOKED to have us be his first official run without a TL on board, and that his Cert was approved. We tipped him well It was exhilarating and terrifying and I feel like I've been in a bar fight, but what a rush! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/thumbnailer/NnbtVFrfsxebcXP2Q5fu.png)

Boy that last picture terrifies me! I can't even tell for sure what is happening! I sometimes think that I might enjoy rafting but I think the reality might just be too stressful!

Boy that last picture terrifies me! I can't even tell for sure what is happening! I sometimes think that I might enjoy rafting but I think the reality might just be too stressful! That was us hitting a stalled boat in front of us. Cutbait is a BIG rapid on this course and the water was HIGH yesterday from all the rain and GA Power had the dam open while we were out. The boat flipped and stalled and boat after boat hit it and flipped. That was DS holding on for dear life. He was worried that it was bad that he lost us all on his first run, and he was desperately trying to hold on to the boat too! Luckily the boss was on the shore and saw what happened before us and the carnage that followed - and how hard he fought to save his boat! It really is scary and stressful…but after we were all safely back in a boat, we were all high-fiving and woo hoo-ing! LOL it was a terrifying and fun all at the same time! I did think I might die once or twice and I don't think I'll ever stop worrying about my son being out there all day long…but he will remember this summer his whole life!

And this is a great picture that kind of shows the river and scenery…ours is the longest urban whitewater course in the world, engineered for safety and maximum rapids. It is an absolute blast! That is part of an old dam in the background right behind a defunct mill. It's just insane scenery - blue herons and turtles and fish jumping, with old mills, dams and bridges and SO much history all the way down the course.

That looks like it would be a blast! And a little bit scary. Congrats to your son getting certified. Sounds like a fun job with a ton of responsibility.
BTW, you didn't happen to set your camera up on a timer beforehand, did you? You might want to scrap that, LOL.

I did some whitewater rafting when I was young and silly, near Pittsburgh. Now I don't think I'd have the courage. lol

Congratulations to your son and those are such amazing photos! I've always thought I'd like to try white water rafting (I'm an adrenaline junkie) and seeing those photos and knowing you just went through it makes me want to do it that much more. You make it sound like such a rush! I'm so glad you got to experience it with your son as your guide! Maybe I'll give it a try next summer once my shoulder is healed a bit more.

What a fun job for your son. You must live somewhere warm. I've only done it in Colorado in melted snow...I was a popsicle.

I've done that a few times in my life. Hey, I live in Idaho, we're kind of known for our whitewater. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) It's really fun. I'm not an Adrenalin junky and I enjoy the trip. You can find whitewater trips that vary according to your experience and what level of rapid you want to encounter. I like to do medium sized ones. Big enough to say you've done it but not so big it's that risky. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) Congrats to your son! He's going to have a great summer as a river guide. Sounds like he did a great job and is ready for the adventure.

The river is the state line between us and Alabama down this stretch. It was HOT Monday and the water was very refreshing after all that exertion!

Great photos I did lol at my bolded above, but honestly I bet showing he could get through that and recover you all went a long way in showing his boss he was ready to be fully certified. YES! His boss said he did the best he could with what he had to work with, and was impressed at how quickly he gathered not only all of us bobbing about but several of the stranded ones from the flipped boat before us (and their guide), then he jumped back out and went to help release the stalled boat. Then yesterday at work, his boss had DS take down a boat of new trainees and rode with them - DS said the boss hardly ever gets on a boat with anyone else guiding. Boss told him to 'surf' a medium rapid and he was so nervous he would flip him out, but he surfed it perfectly. He was stoked and the boss was impressed. This is definitely a great summer job for a college kid that loves adventure. He's strong and level headed - good combo for this work. Still scares the hell out of me though!

All of the pictures that were taken from shore were taken by the whitewater company - they have a photographer that parks at high points down the river and takes as many pictures of each group as he can before they pass, then goes to the next point to get the next big rapid. They do a great job! I have a waterproof camera so I had took several (like the ones of DS) but my hands were too busy most of the time to get many! I really wish I'd had a Go-Pro for when we ate it on that big one!
