We are planning a very spur of the moment weekend trip because dh has a business meeting in Lakewood Ranch. My very brief research says the beaches at Siesta Key are nice - would you recommend staying near there or is there a better/nicer beach? Also, is it a reasonable commute between the two locations? Mapquest says 18 miles = 30 minutes but I'm not sure what the traffic is like and whether that really means 2 hours. TIA for any advice!

That's gonna be a heck of a drive during rush hour, I gotta tell you. There's no really good East-West road, so you only choice is really University, and it does back up, even on the weekends around the mall and shopping centers, etc. My guess is hour, hour & a half.
That being said, we stay at Longboat Key. Nice, quiet, long beaches. Anna Maria is great too. Really any of the beaches in that area you can't go wrong with.

I love all of the Siesta Key/Anna Maria Island/Longboat Key area. I don't know the traffic patterns going inland though. The beaches all over that area are some of my favorites in the state.
