I don't have a recent model, but I loved my Canon Powershot when I did a big trip several years ago. Pocket sized. Great pics. ETA Oops-just checked. It's a Sony Cybershot I have. Have not used it since I got a phone.
I am also looking at Canon and Nikon. I have read a lot of recent reviews as I am considering a new camera. Lots of good reviews in general compared to others.

I have a Sony A6000. It's not a point and shoot but a mirrorless DSLR. It's small enough to stay in my purse. It takes great pictures.

I'm a fan of Kodak point-and-shoot cameras, mainly because the batteries aren't proprietary.

(Side track: Patter - I love your new avatar and your hair! ) I agree about the Canon "G" series camera. They are great. I have a G9 from years ago and still use and love the camera. On the "con" side to the Canon G series is the cost - it's a bit pricey (but totally worth it) and it's heavier than I would like. But like I said, mine is older, so maybe that's no longer true. In the last few months we have purchased 2 other point & shoots: We bought our 9 year old grandson (and well, it's for his mom - our daughter - too) a waterproof camera to take on vacation to the Bahamas. They took it scuba diving and swimming with the dolphins. For a relatively inexpensive camera the pictures were very nice - much better than a cell phone. Plus it had a floating camera strap to keep the camera from sinking to the bottom of the ocean. ha. www.costco.com/FujiFilm-FinePix-XP90-Weatherproof-Digital-Camera-Bundle.product.100248064.htmlWe also purchased a point & shoot for ourselves. We have a lot of $$$ invested in dSLR cameras, but my DH is going on a Fly-in Canadian Fishing trip and doesn't want to take the weight of the dSLR with him on the plane (there is a weight limit on fishing, food and gear). So we went with another Canon, this time the older version of a Canon Power Shot. It hasn't had a lot of use yet, but my picky husband seems happy with it. Duh wrong camera. We have the Canon SX 710 www.bestbuy.com/site/canon-powershot-sx710-hs-20-3-megapixel-digital-camera-red/3651143.p?id=1219593475161&skuId=3651143HTH

I just got a new [to me] G9 two days ago. I am obviously still working with it, watching tutorials, etc. Any tips/tricks you care to share? I am new to this "in between" type camera. I have a DLSR and a pocket-sized point and shoot, but I wanted something that had a little more control. TIA!

Restless Spirit, agh, thank you! That photo was taken last week in my new dress. Loved it so much had to buy 5 of them in different colors. LOL! keithurbanlovinpea, hmm, not sure what kind of tips you are looking for. However, I will highly recommend the laminated cheat sheets. I have them for all of my cameras. My uncle recommended them to me years ago. Easy to take with you on the go and have the info with you. Here is the one for the G9. But he has them for MANY cameras. www.photocheatsheets.com/cs.aspx?pr=86

Canon Powershot. The one I have now isn't available anymore but I love it. Their customer service has been phenomenal when I had an issue with my last Canon and I'll be a customer for life.

I've had a Canon Powershot for several years now. I use it when I don't want to carry my bigger Canon DSL It's a great camera for loading in my purse and pocket that takes great pictures.
I'm intrigued by the Canon "G" cameras you all are talking about. Though there is nothing wrong with my Powershot I'm going to check this one out.

Another vote for the Sony A6000. It's not as cheap as a traditional point and shoot, but IMO the pictures are fantastic.

So glad you asked this question, I am going to South Africa in the fall and I want to get a camera. I'm thinking about picking up a throwaway phone to take instead of my smart phone plus I want to take really clear photos. I'll be following this thread.

When I don't want to carry my bulky dslr, I use a mirrorless camera. The one I'm currently using is a Samsung NX3000. I love it, and I find that I'm now using it more than my dslr. Before that, I was using a Panasonic Lumix. I loved that as well.

I have a Canon Powershot S95 and it's a great little camera. It will fit in a pocket or purse. I wouldn't hesitate to get a newer version. This thread is great, because I am debating getting a new P&S and was going to stick with Canon. It's good to see that reinforced.

I have an Olympus Tough www.getolympus.com/us/en/digitalcameras/tough.htmlbest small camera I've ever owned. waterproof, dust proof, crush proof. Takes fabulous outdoor pictures, wonderful color - not much of a flash so low light indoor pics leave a little to be desired. It's small and handy. Takes great underwater pictures too if the water is clear and you're pretty close to the subject! When it dies, i will replace it with another - I really love how versatile and sturdy this sucker is!

We loved our Panasonic Lumix. We had the DCM-TZ1 model. We've had it for about 12 years. It finally died last week. I think I will replace it with the same camera. It took great photos and was easy to understand how to use.
