I feel like there's been a huge shift. It seems like the republican party is more democratic than it was before by moving further from the right to the middle and that the democratic party has moved so far to the left, it now resembles a socialist party. Hillary has been dragged to the left by Bernie, even though I don't believe for one second that it is really her ideology.
As for Trump, if you study American history, there have been several Presidents who were elected to shake things up. President Reagan was hated by many. His tone and personality was very different from Trump's but he was also seen as an outsider who wanted to change the status quo.
As for Trump's popularity, a large portion of the US, what is known as the silent majority, feels like government has abandoned them. Many of these Americans have not voted since Reagan was elected, many of which were democrats. Many are hurting financially. They don't want a handout. They want jobs. It's really as simple as that. People want to work. They want to take care of their families. Yes, they are gambling on Trump but anything would be better than the status quo.

I am concerned with Mr. Trump's comments and stance with foreign leaders of both our allies and our not-so-allies. I worry that some of his rhetoric will cause irreparable harm to relationships and cause conflicts-it won't be Mr. Trump or his sons or daughters who will end up fighting in those wars, it will be mine. I agree. I don't think it would be long before we are In a war with no allies. That is exactly what many terrorist groups are waiting for.

This election will be one for the history books! Arent they all? To an extent. Some are more memorable than others, though. I think that this one will fascinate historians.

God help us.
I still don't get who is voting for him. I saw a sign on someone's house today but it is the only one I've seen here anywhere and our state went for Trump back in March. There were 15 other candidates more qualified than him at the start (I'm leaving out Carson because I actually think he would have been a worse choice than Trump). I get how a lot of people don't want to choose Clinton over Trump but to choose Trump over all the other Republican candidates is just beyond my comprehension.

Gar, I think it's so cool that this news reached me from across the pond. I've had painters at the house all week and my hubs is working 12 hour days so my life is in turmoil. Thanks for letting me know.

Reagan loved America, Trump ONLY loves himself. I can't stand the comparison and I would guess if Reagan was still alive and cognizant, he would not like it either. Reagan didn't discuss the size of his penis or say women must just be on their period of he didn't agree with them. He didn't make fun of those with disabilities. He didn't single out groups and hate them. He wasn't so arrogant to think that he was the only one to contribute to his success. He wasn't a Narcissist.

Others, I think they're hoping to totally crash the system as we know it. Destroy the Republicans forever. I'm going to hold out hope that a good chunk of the people who voted for him did so to troll the Republican Party. Okay, I hadn't actually considered this theory before, nor read anything that suggested it. Do you really think that it is a possibility that people voted for him in the primaries to turn people away from the Republican party and therefore secure a Democratic win? I can see that as a possibility. I think some people (I cannot even begin to guess how many) vited for Trump to make it easier for whichever Dem to win this election (looking like Clinton at this point). My husband and I tossed around this idea semi-seriously, as did some of our friends. We opted to go ahead and vote for Bernie though, as the thought of actually filling in Trumps bubble sickened us.

I think that he will have a very difficult time "handling" things, he will find himself up against people both foreign and domestic that are much smarter, savvy and won't put up with his bullshit. I hope that is true! Scares me to think of the damage his words will cause.

There's so many more examples but those come to my mind. I know, it's really hard to defend so much of what he says. I just think in this instance, he was responding to what Rubio brought up, and notice Rubio got no heat for bringing up such an absurd topic in the first place. ALL the blame goes to Trump.

The vast majority of people can't tolerate him. Where are all of the "level-headed" Americans? At the Democratic conventions and polls. Just kidding...I'm registered as an independent so I get to make fun of both parties!

I've said from the outset that Clinton & Trump as the major parties' candidates would be confirmation that our country/society has "gone to hell in a handbasket." As an independent, I'm uncomfortable with either person potentially nominating THREE justices during their tenure...UGH!

I'm not sure if this is seen as news across the pond or not, maybe it was seen as all but assured anyway, but I'm seeing reports that he now has the required number of delegates to make him the Republic nominee. I really didn't think this day would come. The TelegraphYep it made the new in New Zealand as well.

But she's still the better option than Trump, because at least she's not a racist, xenophobic lunatic.

Me neither. When did it become American to support a vulgar, racist, Narcissistic, angry man. For so many reasons he would destroy America, at least the America we know! This! It makes me sick and I have to mute the tv every time he comes on. His voice is like nails on a blackboard to me. Still not sure who I am voting for, but is the exact way I feel every time Obama speaks and I have survived the last 7 years and if Trump becomes president you will survive as well

Trump wasn't my choice but by the time the primary hit my state I voted for him because I thought Ted Cruz was a choice I could not live with. I could never vote for Hillary Clinton. Her face should be next to the word "shameless" in the dictionary. She and Bill will rape and pillage like nothing else we have ever seen if she is elected. I will vote for Trump without reservation. I now believe he was from the beginning the only person who could beat her.
Although I am not a believer in socialism and don't agree with his politics I think Bernie Sanders is a good and decent human being but when he said he didn't care about the "damn emails" he effectively handed her the democrats nomination. But it was always in the bag with Debbie Wasserman Schultz (another vile human being in my book) by rigging the process in Hillary's favor. Democrats should also look at the super delegate issue and Republicans the unbound delegate issue.

I'm a Republican and this just baffles me as well. Especially with all we had to choose from starting out. I think one of the problems is so many of the original 17 (18?) candidates were essentially the same candidate. There really wasn't much to choose from between most of them. They were clones of each other and that candidate type didn't have the support of most Republicans and fewer independents. Add that to the general dissillusionment to the status quo in Washington along a little bit of celebrity worship and Trump rises to the top. Last summer I thought this was just a complete sideshow and said there was no way he was going to be the candidate so I'm eating my words now and refusing to predict the future. I was enthusiastically following this election and can barely get through news updates now. I stopped watching the news updates months ago.
