I read this article on the NY Times a couple of days ago and being kind of thinking about what it said since. Today I decided to share it with you all and get your take on it.
The article is "How Facebook Warps our World" by Frank Bruni.
It was written in response with Facebook and did they or didn't they only trend liberal issues but sort of went in a different direction and talked about how the Internet affects us in general. After reading the article I'm wondering if this guy is correct in his assessment of how the Internet affect us in general. That instead of expanding our thinking to different points of view we use the Internet to reinforce what we already believe.
From the article.
"And one of the things we want is to spend more time with people who think like us and less with people who are different". Haidt added " The Facebook effect isn't trivial. But it is catalyzing or amplifying a tendency that was already there."
and
"Carnival barkers, conspiracy theories, willful bias and nasty partisanship aren't new, and they haven't reached unprecedented heights today. But what is remarkable and sort of heartbreaking is the way they're fed by what should be strides in our ability to educate ourselves. The proliferation of the Internet promised to expand our worlds, not shrink them. Instead they've enhanced the speed and thoroughness with which we retreat into enclaves of the like minded."
and
"Technology makes it much easier for us to connect to people who share some single common interest" said Marc Dunkelman, adding that it also makes it easier for us to avoid face-to-face interaction with diverse ideas."
There is a lot more in the article but I think these excerpts give the general idea where this guy is going. I think this guy might be on to something. I think we can all agree the country is divided and has been for some time. I think we can all agree it's difficult to discuss issues for a whole host of reasons. Not only on this board but out there in the real world. And I think what happens on this board is reflective of what is happening out there.
My question is do you agree or disagree with this guy?
I know some have said on this board "that the other person isn't interested in listening to what I have to say" or "dismisses what I have to say".
But isn't it possible the person who is saying that does exactly the same thing to the other person who has different views then theirs? That we all are guilty of shutting down others views one way or another at some time?
Thoughts?
