Video of thievesThis video is from the Michaels in my hometown. I can't believe the nerve of some people! Walking into a Michaels store and pushing people out of the way to steal merchandise, in the broad daylight!

I've heard that Michaels not only doesn't try to stop shoplifters but won't even call to report the theft afterward. When that gets known as your store policy, the word gets out I guess.

@journeyfan I understand not confronting customers who are potentially stealing to avoid a scene, but why wouldn't the managers call the police after the theft? That doesn't make any sense.

Maybe they are trying to cash in on the coloring book fad. Pretty gutsy of them. I hope they catch them!

I wouldn't expect staff to put themselves in danger, but doesn't the article say they were approached by a team member? I don't understand not reporting it to the police. Theft means legitimate customers are paying more to cover the costs on lost stock...why wouldn't they treat it seriously.

That's disgusting. I don't understand that kind of thievery. They're not starving and stealing bread. They're taking art supplies.

Yuck, that makes me sad. If people keep it up, we will have no good crafting retailers. I rely on Michael's for my kids' school projects, when I need some emergency adhesive, etc.

When I worked there, we once had a woman come in and try to exchange (with no receipt) a package of prismacolor markers or pencils (been a while, so not for sure) for a cart practically overflowing with merchandise. Called my manager up when I advised we probably wouldn't be able to honor that and sent her on her merry way...and then proceeded to provide her general description to every other store in town so they would also deny the attempt for an exchange.

I don't remember but think I read it on a message board (here?). It seems like the clerk when questioned about it said they were told not to call the police for thefts but idk if that was per Michaels' direction or the police department.

I bet they are selling on eBay. I remember years ago someone stole basically the entire sizzix / sizzlet alpha end cap within a few days are our local Michael's. So it's been happening a while.

I was reading a business book this weekend. The author has a big company now but started out as a shoplifter.
She told of one trick where she'd go into a chain craft store, buy their most expensive pencil or pen set, chat the clerk up about how her mom really wants them for her birthday and she hopes her sister doesn't buy them as well.
Meanwhile, she has a set she's stealing in her bag, so 2 sets total. She comes back in a few minutes, goes to the same clerk, says oops her sister did buy them for her mom, she didn't get or can't find her receipt, and the clerk returns her money because she remembers speaking with her.
Then the thief/author would go to the nearest branch of the same store and return the set she stole with the receipt. There are sure some "crafty" people out there!

people are just foul. I've never liked the idea of stuff being locked up at a craft store but seeing stuff like this reminds me why it has to be done.

A few of the Michaels stores in my area still have the Copics out for anyone to help themselves. Some stores moved them behind the register, after they were initially in front of it. When those cashier's get busy whose going to notice? Or what about kids playing with them? Just doesn't make sense why they are still out there.

Yes, I've been struggling with that as I read the book too which, other than her checkered past, is full of great info and inspiration. The book is #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso.

That's actually ridiculous haha. People lose receipts, you have no idea whether she stole the markers or not. I get that people do try that type of thing but many others just lose receipts and there is a policy on store credit for merchandise without receipt for a reason. Sounds like you guys had way too much time on your hands that day.

How does someone even end up finding such a specific a 2-year-old thread? Someone Googles" Michaels Prismacolor theft with fraudulent returns", and ends up finding a place to post their snark right here? Ok then... Welcome, I guess?

I was in Tuesday Morning last week and the clerk watched a lady walk out with merchandise. She said they had all been watching her. Pisses me off that they don't do anything about it.
