My goal this summer is to organize all our family pictures. Currently some reside on CD's, an external drive, the cloud, and on my laptop hard drive. Where do you store your pictures? Anyone pay for cloud storage? I'm thinking I have way too many pictures for me to be able to store them online for free. Maybe I should just go external though? Tell me how your pictures are stored.

External on a huge Kodak Picture Mate. And on Cd's. And on my computer.

On my laptop plus EHD (Time Capsule) with back up through Time Machine (I have a Mac) plus all uploaded to Flickr (1TB free) and Dropbox (I pay $9.99 per month for 1TB.)
If you're an Amazon Prime member I believe you can get free cloud storage.

My pictures are on my hard drive, backed up to an external drive, and backed up via Carbonite as well.
My picture library is at 120 gig and I'm still scanning...

I now totally believe an external is not the way to go.
The recent fire evacuations in Fort McMurray with over 2,600 lost homes, no way to even go home to grab pets, let alone externals, I think cloud storage is the way to go. I'm trying to figure out if paying for Dropbox is best, some have recommended Amazon prime which I don't have, some Google photos.

I pay for extra Apple storage and also have them backed up to a separate hard drive, as well as a lot of them are on my computer. Triple back up! I added the online storage a few years ago and it solves the problem of a fire or loss of the house. The remote hard drive is good for storing pictures from events I may not need again, such as DS's old football games or DD's plays. I take tens of thousands of pictures during a season and put them online. I keep just the pics of my kids on my computer.

EHD and a SmugMug paid account are my primary backups. I do use Amazon Prime, too, just because it's there. But, I haven't figured out if it's easy to recover your files. I've had SmugMug account 2007 or so. It's easy to use. There is an app that automatically transfers my phone photos it fits my needs for storage, access, ease of downloading a photo, and sharing only what I want shared by steering albums to shared or private. Amazon has neat features, too. Every day, I get a notification of photos taken on that date in years past. It's always fun to look through those.

I have been in tears over this tonight.
Long story short: don't just use an external hard drive or your computer hard drive.
My MacBook crashed and died last month and my photos of my mom while she was in Hospice are gone. While I have everything else backed up I can't find any photos from Jan 2014 when she passed.
I have also had external hard drives fail.
I now store on EHD and the Cloud.

We pay for cloud storage. I'm not in the details but I don't recall it being that much of a monthly fee.

I have all my photos on an external hard drive and also backed up onto DVDs. I now totally believe an external is not the way to go. The recent fire evacuations in Fort McMurray with over 2,600 lost homes, no way to even go home to grab pets, let alone externals, I think cloud storage is the way to go. I have to agree with this. Well, not as the only option anyway. I had 14 years of digital photos backed up onto an EHD. I had taken the photos off my computer because they took up too much room. Then my EHD broke (the part where you plug the USB into got pushed inside the unit). My brother took the guts out of the EHD and installed it in my computer so I was able to retrieve all the photos. But then when we downloaded Windows 10 the (now internal) EXD did not work and actually prevented me from being able to boot up the computer so I had to take it out. Even though I had saved all my photos onto another EXD before this happened, I still lost about 7 years of P365.

Whatever you choose to use you need to have the files in two different place. As in, one set on an EHD and the second identical set in the cloud, or on a set of cds. No one way is fool proof which is why they need to exist in two places. EHD can fail as can jump drives, cds, and internal hard drives. On line storage places have closed with no warning to its users.
Ideally the two sets will be stored in separate places as well. Not just separate rooms in a house but one at home and one at a relative's house.
I have two ehd I use. I don't trust having my photos in someone else's control which is what happens if they are in cloud storage. They are on someone's server that can crash or be taken offline or be hacked.

Carbonite, backblaze and smugmug. I like to be extra careful. LOL. The reason I keep using smugmug is because a while back a bunch of my pictures and files disappeared without my realizing it and if I hadn't discovered it within a certain amount of time, they would have also been removed from my cloud based backups. Since they mirror my hard drives.
Also, I like that the smugmug app automatically uploads my phone pictures and videos.

I pay for Dropbox which is about $10 a month for unlimited storage. I have set my PC and iPad to auto upload anytime I connect my camera or phone and it gives me great piece of mind. I also have most of my pics on a couple of EHD but I've heard of so many people that have had them fail that there is no way I'd just trust one of those. The other thing is, print those pics! I am going through and printing all the ones that I couldn't bear to lose plus having some displayed, they make me happy

I use smugmug and EHD. My laptop died and since I had a current backup I did not lose anything, thankfully. I would like to place an a second EHD in a safety deposit box and update that once a month. I do print my photos out as well. ?

A combination of CDs, DVDs, EHD, on the hard drive of the computer, and also on a PictureKeeper EHD. All printed photos are stored online at Costco as well.

I save them on my computer, and then use carbonite online backup to backup my business files, docs, fonts and pictures. and believe me, there is a TON of space used with my 600+ of PSD (photoshop) files! and thousands of pics! I have not exceeded the $5/mo price tho. I've been a happy customer for years now, and it saved my butt when 2 computers died and I could just download my stuff from carbonite.
ETA with carbonite you never have to tell it to backup your files, or tell it to, in any way. if you did, I would forget for months. every time your computer is online, it runs quietly in the background and backs up any new files. you don't even have to think about it. this is why it works best for me.

Another smugmug and EHD user. I have some older pictures on Shutterfly that were transferred there when the Kodak gallery shut down.

I use Google Photo, an external hard drive and upload to Shutterfly (just to have them somewhere to print in case something happens to the other options).

We'll start with I have for more photos than the average bear That said I have 1 4TB my book for mac, 3 2tb passport external hard drives ( I take one when I travel) I also pay for storage at Smugmug which a lot of pros use. I use smug mug for a couple of reasons, one I can download my photos in full resolution though they are not set up for raw photos I can down load what I have uploaded in jpeg form in full resolution It's also easy for me to share, I send a link and my friends/family can download or order photos of their choosing I can lock up,password protect any album, gallery I choose. It works for me and has worked well for several years. They have varied prices depending on your personal needs I think the basic is about $40 a year

I use Backblaze. I accidentally deleted stuff when I transferred over to my new computer. They had me restored within a day.

We have two EHD. One here at home and the other at DH's office. Once per week they are swapped.
I have some pictures on Smugmug and Amazon cloud.

We have a RAID array that stores our thousands and thousands of photos (last count we were around 70,000) and then we back up to Carbonite.
