Lol. I've always wished I could get that one, except that I never answer the phone unless the Caller-ID says it's someone I know. lol. But just now it rang and ID said "District of Columbia". My dh's cell phone says that although this wasn't his phone number. But he's been having some trouble with his cell so I thought maybe his work had given him a new phone. Anyway, I answered it. It was an Indian/Pakistani type accent, a woman, from Microsoft. She let me know that they had detected some "unauthorized downloading" on my computer. They would help me fix it and it would require me to be in front of my computer. So I said okay, I'm in front of it. And I asked if she could really see my computer downloading something... ? She said "yes ma'am." She said "now we'll need you to go into your control panel..." (or something like that). I said okay, how do I do that. She started to tell me but at that point I decided just to fess up. But first I asked her why she thought people would fall for this scam today when we have all these warning out there. She said "Ma'am this is not a scam." I said "oh but it is, definitely. And I can be sure of that because you told me you could see unauthorized downloading on my computer, except that I'm using a MacBook." Silence. Then "click", she hung up. hahahahaha scammers make me mad! My parents got the IRS one and my mother actually believed it and called me about it! Thankfully they never answer the phone either so the "IRS" message went to their voice mail, and she never talked to the guy in person. omg.

I love getting this call, mostly because we have a Mac too.

I received those calls a couple of times and they end up stammering when I say I don't have a computer. Ha!

I got that call about 2 weeks ago (or rather my father did, I just happened to have answered his phone)
I strung the guy along for a while pretending on I was on my computer before I told him he should be ashamed of himself for trying to scam people. That made him hang up fast.

My mother likes to string on those sorts of callers also. She flusters, doesn't take direction, and answers questions with confused other questions. She provides misleading and wrong answers. I asked her why she liked talking to criminals. I just hang up.

LOL. I love it! I can't believe anyone actually falls for those scams anymore, but then again I know some pretty gullible people! We only have cell phones now so unless I'm expecting a call from an unknown entity, most of those calls never make it through my filter.

I got that call for the first time about 2 months ago. Normally I don't answer the landline unless I know the number, but this was a CT number and a friend had just moved there so I thought it might be her. It was a guy with an Indian accent who didn't take no for an answer. Even after I told him we only had Macs he kept talking. I just hung up on him. It is really surprising that they are still using that scam considering that nearly everyone knows about it.

I always ask them which computer they are referring to, which brand? We have several. They then get flustered and hang up.

We are still receiving those calls as well. As previously commented one would think that they would think up something new by now!

I wouldn't volunteer truthful information, like I use a Mac, because I am paranoid. They'd probably target me once they develop a Mac script They must still be successful or they'd stop. It's hard to believe there's a person with a computer and phone unaware of this.

OMG...one of my friend's hubby got one and believed it and gave them access to the computer...of course they wanted $150 to reset it (they locked their computer remotely).... They didn't pay, but had a friend set it back to factory reset and lost everything else.
Needless to say he lived in the dog house for awhile.

Ha, I was feeling left out because the IRS wasn't coming to haul me to jail. Thankfully, I had a message this week that they were on their way.

I haven't ever received a call from "Microsoft," but I have received several messages from the "IRS" saying they are filing charges against me. I'm still waiting to be hauled off to the clank.

We got the IRS call about 2 weeks ago. I let it go to VM but hubby was listening to the msg upstairs. He was ready to call them and the work comp lawyer on his case. He thought there was something wrong because the msg said if we didn't respond to them in x # of days, good luck with the case in court. I had to tell him twice it was fraud

Hanging my head in shame. I was really stressed one day when one of those guys called and I went on a tirade that embarrassed even me. It ended with me saying I hoped he died a thousand painful deaths. Yep, not my finest moment. He retaliated by calling us back about 20 times and hanging up. DH hadn't heard the tirade so he was confused until I admitted what I had done. I was afraid the guy was going to come to our house and kill us but then I remembered he was probably in India.

I always ask them why they don't get a real job and make money like everyone else instead of scamming people!
I got one about FREE pendants for the elderly in case they fall. This is about the 8th I have received about this same pendant and every time I tell them to take me off their list. So this time I told them they could remove us because no one older than 28 lived at our home. They thanked me and I haven't heard from them since. I'm going to use that for the "reverse mortgage" calls I get. Maybe they will leave me alone.
I have a phone in my scraproom, but it doesn't have caller id. It's an old push button...an antique! So I always answer if I'm scrapping.

I love playing along with this on my Mac. I am usually on an iPad at the time. Where is the start button anyway? I once told the person off. Someone got mad at me for getting mad at the idiot from "Microsoft". Then the idiot started getting mad at me for talking in that tone of voice.

Lol I always want to have fun with that call but no landline and I rarely answer unknown numbers on my cell. Shucks.
Sadly I think a lot of people don't know about this scam. Especially older people who don't have the general computer knowledge that most of us that hang out here have. I told my mil about that scam a couple years ago when she and her aunt both got new computers, I was worried that they might be targeted, she'd never heard about it.

My favorite was when a friend got that call at work. "Sir you have reached the IT help desk for the WI dept of corrections...now, would you really like to continue?"

Oh we get at least two calls a month like this. If we have the time, we go along with what they are saying. We'll stall and say we have to reboot our computer. We continue to stall with things like, let me have your talk to my husband - we keep them waiting for husband to pick up. We kept them on the phone for 15 minutes one time. At the end, I'll nicely tell him/her that they are losers.

we get these calls too but I just hang up. I wonder though, do they do it to get people to divulge that they have a Mac and somehow use that info for something else?

These scammers seem to think of all sorts of angles. But they won't get anything from me, or any Mac user I don't think, because we already have the best customer service out there. If we have something "unauthorized downloading" on our computers we'll just go on over to the Apple Store.

At my last workplace, where I worked for almost a decade, we got the copier toner scam calls every week for the entire time I worked there. At one point, we had an incredibly aggressive guy who would not stop calling and trying to trick us into giving the copier information. I had a new assistant and I grabbed the phone out of her hands because she was about to give the guy the info. I told him to stop calling us. He kept calling back to the point where he recognized my voice and my assistant's voice, so he then tried different numbers to try and get around us. At one point, he was calling over 20 times per day.
That same assistant almost fell for the Microsoft scam -- had to rip the phone out of her hand that day too.
Super intelligent woman, but incredibly naive.

I generally let them go on and on, telling me how terrible the issue is, then casually mention that it's good that we don't have computers then.

We had an issue with our internet provider and went on their website. But it was a fake website and they messed with our computers. They told us they would fix it and then pick up their $700 check by sending FedEx. They ran a bunch of scans that you get for free on the internet. Thankfully my son figured it all out and the real internet provider was called. She said to never call a number off there internet and only call the number on your paper statement. Needless to say, FedEx showed up and was looking for the $. My husband explained the scam and he went on his merry way. They called back for weeks looking for their money.

One day in a playful mood I told them I didn't have a computer...they guy argued with me for a good 5 minutes insisting I must have a computer, how do I get on with life? how do I pay my bills? converse with friends and family?...he had all sorts of questions. I finally said "well I have to go, we have talked long enough for the FBI to trace your call" He had to have pulled something hanging up so fast!!!

We've gotten that call at least twice and the first time my sister answered it and started going over to the computer to mess with I it. Good thing I was there to realize what was going on! She was only about 14/15 at the time, but jeez it could've ended up badly for our computer.
