.....received a call on Saturday from a state's attorney general's office. I didn't answer it because it was from "unknown". They left a voicemail and we called the number and it actually was the state's office and got a recording that we owed $8K (state's office was closed until Monday). I still wasn't sure if it was scam or not. I looked up the state's phone number and called them on Monday. We moved from that state in 2006.
Someone attempted to file a state return in 2013, they stopped it. However, when they got information from the IRS they decided we owed them money. They were only one week away from filing a lien on our credit. Thank goodness I didn't dismiss this as a scam. I spent all morning talking to different people in an attempt to stop the lien. I pointed out that we never received a phone call or letter. They said we sent you a letter and since the USPS didn't return it, they assumed we received it. Ummm, whoever tried to file gave 1556 Any Street as our address. We never lived there in in fact, if they looked up the county's property tax, they would see 1556 Any Street isn't a property, it doesn't exist.
I began to realize we had received the same phone call months earlier and I dismissed it because we hadn't lived in the state for ten years. I thought it was a scam.
Scam or not, be prudent about denying or accepting it is a scam. Never call the number they leave, look up the number online and check there to see if it could be legitimate. A $8K lien would have destroyed our credit. It would have taken months to get it cleared.
ETA This happened last Monday, not yesterday (Memorial Day).

Wow - glad you got it sorted out. Why was somebody trying to file a tax return in your name? Did they have all the pertinent info like social security numbers?

Wow, I'm so glad you sorted it out and caught it in time.
I'm sorry that some POS messed with your information, potentially screwing up your credit. I don't understand how people who do this kind of crap can look themselves in the mirror.

I would have dismissed it also since the call came on a Saturday from a governmental office.
Glad you worked it out!

And what were the people trying to do - filing in some way to get a refund? In your name?

And what were the people trying to do - filing in some way to get a refund? In your name? The IRS sent us a letter last year saying their system was compromised and gave us one free year of fraud protection. The state wouldn't go into details, but fortunately whoever attempted to get a refund, was denied. I am sure they (criminals) were trying to get an automatic deposit refund and if the state wants to take action, they will. We gave them enough supporting documents to satisfy the stopping of the lien. BTW the free fraud protection from the IRS allows us to monitor our credit.

How successful is that scam even? Because doesn't the IRS automatically get reports of things like W2s and such - so the scammers have to generate a bunch of info that seems hard to replicate/verify. At any rate, I'm glad you got things sorted out. What a PITA.

Whew! Glad you got ahold of them before the lien. I suspect that would have been ugly.
