A couple of weeks ago, I was shopping, with my phone in my pocket, and I got a call from an unknown number. I do not usually answer unknown calls, but it was a local area code, so I thought it was from someone at church or something.
The man claimed that I had called him and not left a message. I assumed my phone had somehow initiated a call from being in my pocket and apologized. The conversation was brief. After the call ended, I realized that there was no record in my call log of my phone having called that number. It was also locked, which means it should not have been able to make any calls till unlocked, even if bumped in my pocket. It seemed odd, but I got no more calls and thought no more about it. Till today.
My phone was in the shelving next to my bed. I haven't slept well lately, so I took a nap. I was awakened two hours later by someone calling. Again, it was a local number. Again, the person on the other end said that I had called him and he wanted to know who I was and why I had called. This guy had a foreign accent, so it did not appear to be the same guy as two weeks ago. I told him that my phone had been sitting untouched for hours and there was no way that he had been called by my number. I probably sounded grumpy. He had awakened me from a nap, and I knew there was no way my phone could have called him. He said, "Oh, okay," and hung up. I checked the call log afterward, which shows both calls sent as well as calls received. My phone definitely had NOT called him either.
I have a "wrong numbers" entry in my phone book, and when I add a number, I can check a box that makes all calls from that number go to voicemail. The voicemail message gives no clue as to my identity other than the phone number they called. I added the last one. I'm not sure if I added the one from a couple of weeks ago.
So what do you think? I wasn't bothered by it except this has happened twice in about two weeks, and it has never happened to me before. Is it something weird or creepy, or nothing that I should be concerned about? I'm not sure what to think, but has this happened to any of you?

I would call you cell phone carrier, Verizon or who you have, ask for technical support and have them check your line and they can help you.

Personally, I would just stop answering calls from unknown numbers and forget about it.
But then I don't usually answer calls from known numbers either.
I detest talking on the phone under any circumstances.

Something like this happened to my DH a few weeks ago. You know how scammers can "spoof" the caller ID number? Turns out they had spoofed DH's cell number. They use a random number generator, so there was nothing he did wrong. He got 2 calls back, both from the same guy, and now it has seemed to have stopped.
We looked into it, and there is really nothing you can do if this is what is going on.

Well if people are calling from the same number, you could block them. Or you could block calls from anyone not in your contacts.

I have the same situation going on. My phone is making calls I did not make, and I am also receiving calls from people that did not make them. I called Sprint customer service, and they were as helpful as a turd flavored Tic Tak. It's been going on since Christmas! I just stopped answering numbers I don't know, and if they leave a message saying I called them, I block the number.

Someone else is probably calling people with software that allows it to register on the receiver's caller ID as if it were your number. That is how telemarketers are now getting around call blocking. You can call your carrier, but I don't think that they will be able to do anything about it.

I once got about 25 phone calls all in one day from people calling to tell me I called them. After the first few I knew something was seriously wrong, and I let them go to voicemail.
Many angry people claimed they received calls from my number and apparently were getting political messages. It went from about 10am until about 6pm. Thank goodness it only lasted one day. I thought I was going to have to change my number.

I asked someone who used to work for a cell phone company, and he thought it might have been an attempted phishing scam, or the start of one. They were trying to find out my name by asking who I was, under the pretense that I had supposedly called them. I never gave them my name, just insisted that I had not called them.
I don't usually answer numbers I don't know, but most crap calls have come from other area codes. From now on, I will just let the unknowns go to voicemail, but I wondered if this was happening to others, and if so, what was behind it.
Edited to add: It did occur to me that my number might have been spoofed. My call log proves my phone is not calling people that I don't know, so it's not my phone. And yes, I do block questionable numbers.

I had it happen on our home phone. Someone I knew was calling saying I just called nope no one home to make the call I just walked into the house. It was weird and I thought it was probably spoofed but weird since it was someone we knew but not a number had ever called from that phone.

I think companies who do "spam" robo calls use random numbers to show up on our caller ID. I get a lot of spam calls and one day I was so sick of it, I called the number back to yell at the guy. It's was a stranger who had no idea what I was talking about. The robo call company had stolen his number.
The spam calls drive me crazy. When I get one, I add the number to a contacts list in my phone marked "Spam" that I have attached a silent ringtone to. The list must have 50 numbers on it now, and the same number has NEVER called twice.

I think the @#$^%*@( telemarketers are spoofing numbers. The number of unknown callers I get with my area code and even local exchange has risen exponentially. I just keep blocking numbers from unknown callers.

I don't get many local spoofed numbers, but if an unknown number does come up (they're usually out of state phone numbers), I don't answer. If I get a chance, I Google the number to see what I can find. There are several reverse phone number lookup sites where people report spam callers. Then I block the number.

I get that occasionally on my phone. I just keep my phone on Do Not Disturb and only let calls from my favorites list come through. The others will go to voicemail. If they don't leave a voicemail, then it must not be that important. I also hate talking on a phone.

Thanks, everyone. Based on the replies, I am guessing my number was spoofed. I will wait and see if it continues, and then see if I need to contact my cell carrier. I can change my number if I need to, but it sounds like the scammers don't keep spoofing the same number most of the time.

The spoofers are getting crazier! I sometimes receive a call n my cell phone and according to caller ID, I am calling myself. I never answer.

I agree it's your number getting spoofed. I've received calls spoofed from our local hospital and even my own number!

So, a girl I work with would randomly call me. When I would answer it would disconnect. I showed her all the calls on my end and hers would have no record. She had a glitch according to ATT. I wasn't the only one her phone was calling. It could be as simple as that. If it keeps up, call your cell company.

yep, spoofed number. We regularly get telemarketer phone calls at home from our OWN home number - it's really gotten out of hand.

Spoofed number, apparently I'm Rachel from cardholder services. I call myself all the time on my house phone and my cell phone. I hate it, but there really isn't anything I can do.
But people are dumb to call the number back, that's how they get you on the hook for stuff, because you initiated contact. The way I look at is, if you are legit you will either be a human on the other end or leave a message if I don't answer.

This was happening to me a few months ago. Three incoming calls from three different people telling me I called them when I didn't. When I googled it a bunch of sites came up that my number was spoofed.

Not familiar with that one, yet, but I have noticed an uptick in local area code numbers.
What I AM tired of though are the ones about vehicle warranties. The 30K I gave you for my van isn't enough for you to not sell my information, dealership?!

Same thing happened to me yesterday. The third time my phone rang with a number I didn't recognize I was driving. I wasn't going to answer it, but DS said "get it mom" so I did. So glad I did - it was the radio station telling me I won concert tickets to see Miranda Lambert & Kenny Chesney!
