It is horrifying. I remember the first time I hear of this and the article I read said that it is often performed with broken glass or aluminum tops. How on earth do you justify that??

I graduated from an all woman college in 1989. One of the papers I wrote was about genital mutilation.
The sole purpose for a clitorectomy was to ensure that the woman would not experience sexual pleasure during intercourse.
The purpose of male circumcision is for sanitary reasons and to ensure the man gets pleasure.
DISGUSTING.

Did you read the article? It's about a case where it was done in a hospital. I did read the article, and you are right, in this instance it was done in a hospital. But I also know that the in the vast majority of cases it is not done in a hospital, not done under sanitary conditions, not done by any sort of medical professional and not done in the best interest of the woman. So I will stand by the fact that it isn't the same. In this case, for no other reason than the only reason the surgery is performed is based on the idea that by cutting off a woman's clitoris, the man of the family-be it father or husband-is solely done to control a woman's sexuality. |

Intentionally or not, you have called many people here dirty, disgusting and filthy, or crappy parents, by labeling common household and parenting practices as such. Maybe you don't care, but it doesn't endear you to most of us. Responding to a legitimate thread someone else starts with an immediate negation of their statement is rude. We already had a whole thread for those who wanted to condemn the mother in the gorilla story; when I started a thread to show some solidarity with moms who had lost track of a kid before, you had to jump in and reaffirm your criticism of her on that one, too. When I started this thread about something I thought most of us could agree is repugnant, you had to come in and post your controversial statement on purpose to draw attention away from the topic at hand and to attempt to minimize or denigrate it. When I did my research in college the articles I read said circumcision was originally done for sanitary reasons and also found to increase pleasure. I no longer have my research papers to site from but I do remember the conclusions.
Whatever. This isn't about circumcision. It is about female MUTILATION. I guarantee if this was about cutting off a male penis, the conversation would garner more outrage.

In my perfect little life I assume (I know,I know) that this is happening with the uneducated folks, who may not know or consider the risk because that is the way it's always been done. But if I read the article correctly, the mother is a nurse and the late father was a surgeon. In my world that equates to education. It just goes to how deeply ingrained traditions are in society.
