This is the first time I've ever had a "fight" with anyone here. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. that is SO not true. It's hilarious! you fight with everyone! over ANYTHING. You've become sort of a joke.

I am very judgmental and rigid IRL and I don't have a problem with that. Some people are dirty and gross. Some people do make bad parenting decisions. If they don't like being called on it, that's their problem. "Common" doesn't mean good. Why would anyone strive to be "common"? I don't think my statement here takes away from your thread. I agree with you and go further. Again, it was on topic. I really don't think I deserve to be called a troll at all. This is the first time I've ever had a "fight" with anyone here. Since you are so careless about the words you use to describe others and the negative tone you take towards so many on this board, I'm quite surprised you reject -- or even care about -- being called a troll. I truly thought that's the effect you were going for: the mean woman who doesn't care about anyone's feelings and just wants to show how perfect she thinks she is. If that is not the case, you would benefit from social skills training. If it IS the case, you are succeeding.

I caught up on a lot of podcasts at work this weekend and one was a very interesting (and moving) first-hand account from a woman who had had a form of female circumcision. It was Act One of This American Life Who Do We Think We Are?I heard this too and thought it was really well done (and it came to my mind too when this thread first popped up).

I didn't read all of the comments, but I read this and was horrified. I looked up what they do and apparently there are 3 versions where the worst is essentially leaving the woman with a hole smaller than an anus. I think the 'benefit' that one is a tighter feel for the man, no benefit at all to the woman and that in itself can cause complications and death during childbirth.
I really don't understand the mindset of maintaining fidelity in doing this procedure because there isn't anything to support it...as a woman, I see no problems in 'controlling myself'. A woman who likes sex is no more likely to cheat than a man who likes sex...so I presume it's okay to screw around if you're a man in that culture. We believe the opposite in this country. Hence victim blaming after a rape. 'She was asking for it, dressing like a slut'. I mean, look at the Duggars...women are supposed to dress a certain way and be uber modest so boys aren't tempted.
I'm a very alpha personality and I just can't wrap my head around the idea that, in many cultures (ours to a degree, too) women are subhuman, need to be controlled, incapable of independent thought, etc. And the fact that there are women who support men that think like this or even WANT men who think like this. I just can't fathom.
I am thankful that my children are being raised by people who will not perpetuate such awful stereotypes. I hope it results in my daughter being a strong woman who is confident in who she is and sons who are respectful of women and don't treat them as conquests. If they turn out anything like my husband, we'll have done our jobs well.

My point is I view male and female genital mutilation as the same. Ah, but no matter how you view it, they are decidedly not the same. Male circumcision removes the foreskin only: "According to the World Health Organisation, circumcision of male babies results in a "very low rate of adverse events, which are usually minor" – between 0.2% and 0.4%. There is also evidence that circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexually-acquired HIV infection in men, by as much as 60%." [Source] Further: "There is no evidence whatsoever to support the notion that it affects function, sensation or satisfaction." [Source]FGM "involves the partial or complete removal of the genitalia, is a crime because it is abhorrent by any measure. It subjugates women, makes intercourse extremely difficult and painful, and can be the cause of a number of serious medical complications, including not only haemorrhage [sic] but also urinary retention, urinary infection, wound infection, and septicaemia. Sadly, in the countries where it is most widely performed, hygiene is poor, and thus both hepatitis and tetanus have also resulted." [Source]
