How do people handle their allergies if they go away to college?
In the work force?
On vacations?

I developed a tree nut allergy in my 30s. When I'm at a restaurant, I read and ask questions. When I'm at work (or a friend's house or a potluck) and someone brings in something homemade, I ask before I eat any. If there is nobody to ask...I don't eat it. (Works great for weight loss.) When I serve nuts to my kids, I wash my hands well.
I've found nuts in odd places, so I ask about everything. Someone brought in home-made irish cream coffee creamer...and I was drinking it the person who made it remembered they used almond milk in place of the booze. With all the gluten-free stuff...they often substitute almond flour.
You just have to be careful and vigilant.

you are an adult, hopefully understand your med situation and just handle it. avoid foods or other allergens, stay on top of meds and be a self advocate.
the worse was when my brother (allergic to many common foods and plants) ..even with documentation, could not get exempted from the draft. basic training would have killed him. then he got a high draft number and didn't have to go.

Take Zyrtec in ragweed season Add Flonase if necessary Avoid melons and anything that has touched them Take Benadryl when you discover melons touched the blueberries your aunt brought

Zyrtec everyday Nasacort everyday Asthmanex everyday Neti pot everyday Epi pen everywhere I go
Acupuncture, 1000 MG of fish oil and local honey have kept my symptoms mild this season. Food allergies are a whole other issue. I have to ask and ask again before I eat anything someone else makes. And always keep Benadryl handy.

How do people handle their allergies if they go away to college? In the work force? On vacations? I assume you are referring to those who have had schools be declared nut free for their safety? They have learned to ask what is in foods. Be vigilant for their own medical needs. They have learned to be proactive, carry a container of wipes and clean surfaces that may be contaminated. Carry a lunch to work. Not share food. THey are allowed to keep their epi pen on them instead of locked in the nurses office 10 minutes across campus and the nurse may or may not be in that office. But, also the world around them has grown up and is less likely to eat pb sandwiches for lunch, less likely to smear it on a table/chair, more apt to wash their hands after eating so sticky food residue isn't passed around the office.

Are you talking about allergies to foods or pollens, etc?
I have one sister who is severely allergic to shellfish. She has to be hyper vigilante and aggressive about it because so many people do not " believe" in allergies. She had one boyfriend (so obviously someone she trusted) who tried to sneak shellfish into a salad he made for her and which he highly seasoned to try and cover the taste. Luckily, she happened to see the discarded package in the trash. He defended himself by saying that "Surely, you are exaggerating. You wouldn't really get sick if you didn't know you were eating." Sadly, she's had so many people with the same attitude.

I think the answer is going to depend on what type of allergies you're talking about.
I take Zyrtec every single day. Without the Zyrtec I become a disgusting mess that can't stop sneezing. My eyes become red and watery, my throat will hurt. All day, every day, regardless of what time of year it is or where I am. Before I started taking it I nearly got into a car accident because I was having a sneezing fit and couldn't see while driving. That was a scary wake up call.

I read labels and ask lots of questions. I pack a lot of my own food and sometimes I don't eat.
Traveling can be difficult sometimes.
I'm grateful my allergic reaction is slow and painful vs likely to be fatal.
I had an acquaintance tell me allergies were all in your mind once and served me guacamole with fresh lime juice. He realized what a complete ass he was as I was coughing up blood the next morning.

WTH!! Allergies all in your mind?! I'd be tempted to throat punch him so he was coughing up blood too after he pulled some bullshit like that.

How do people handle their allergies if they go away to college? In the work force? On vacations? As someone who developed several food allergies in adulthood I mostly decline food and at restaurants I read and ask a lot of questions. I carry meds and will be likely carrying an epi pen after my next allergist appt. Because they continue to get worse and my reactions to new foods keeps expanding. My son's good friend has been allergic to many foods since he was a baby and he is very well adjusted in middle school and good about reading labels and asking questions and bringing foods he can eat when he goes places.

Allegra and Flonase daily. I should do allergy shots and be done with them but I haven't wanted to make the commitment.

I sent my husband to work with a peanut butter sandwich and it made me wonder how people who have the severe peanut allergy ( the type the touching a surface that peanut person has touched) deals with the real world.

It is honestly amazing how many people do not believe in allergies. She recently spent a week in the hospital after her boss forced her to attend a banquet at which he knew they were serving seafood and put her right next to the buffet. In 15 minutes, she was on the floor with someone stabbing her thigh with an epi-pen and her boss still says she "over-reacted." So now, she is even more aggressive about it. Because people are idiots.

Not sure if you mean a food allergy or seasonal allergy, we have both in the house. I am allergic to all/any nuts and peanuts, vanilla beans. Out daughter is asthmatic. College and vacation advise- don't keep this silent. The person of concern needs to tell roommates, and circle of friends where rescue medicines are kept. Epi pen or inhaler, pills whatever you need to be able to get to the ER if symptoms are that bad. Reaching out and teaching the people that surround you is very important. A simple cake pop at a birthday party gave me a bad reaction just a few weeks ago and I am 53, even when I ask the questions people don't get it. Any nuts in this dessert? Nope......The flavoring in the icing was almond extract. Frustrating. Daughter with asthma has mild seasonal allergies, but is also allergic to alcohol. We found out a lot of asthmatics are, just part of the disease that doesn't get talked about too much. Good luck hope our comments give you some help.
