I've never had a terrier before, or even a dog I've had to groom. But i have one now, she a mix and is 4 months old. Are there special tools/brushes for terriers? Right now her coat is cute and soft and I don't see a need for grooming, but maybe in the future. Her fur "puddles" down around her feet, it looks real cute right now. Might be a pain when it's wet and muddy in the winter! Oh, and her face looks "scruffy". Here is a pic of her from about 6 weeks ago. How do you know if you need to trim or groom a terrier? I'm thinking at bare minimum I need to get a brush and get her used to that.

Does she shed? If not then she needs to be groomed. If she sheds them you can just brush and bathe.

She is adorable. I have a terrier mix. We have her groomed about every 4 months. Her beauty shop visits are more expensive than mine, She is not wiry but not super soft either. She does not shed.
They trim everything and clean out her eyes. Nails etc. I have trimmed her face in between visits and I have trimmed her nails at home but she can go 4 months, I would recommend getting her used to it as a puppy. Even if it is a bath or a bottom trim.
Have fun with the pup

Both of my girls are terrier mixes. They go to the groomer monthly for baths and nail trims. The blonde one's hair grows a lot longer and she gets trimmed about every other month. The darker one only about twice a year.

I would google grooming styles.
You will have to wash and dry her paws during the winter.

Definitely get her used to being brushed. And if she doesn't shed, she will need periodic hair cuts. I think Piper was close to 6 months old for her first visit to the groomer and goes about every 3 months now.
