I have had panic attacks for about 10 years now. I get very hot and sweaty. I also get an overwhelming sense of dejavu...like I have seen that particular scenario play out before. It is almost like I am not in my body, but I am watching from a higher advantage in the room...from a corner. And the weirdest thing is that I smell the same odor each time...but I cannot for the life of me tell you what it is. I always ask the people around if they can smell that and they look at me like I have lost my mind.
Sometimes I am in a stressful situation and other times not. There seems to be no common denominator. Well...that is not true. It is usually when light is refracted in a room in a particular way. I am very light sensitive and even wear sunglasses on cloudy days to avoid light glares.
What are your panic attack experiences?

I get hot. My heart races, sometimes I get very agitated. And occasionally my head and my feet will feel like they are a million miles away from each other.

I always woke up through the night with mine. I had an overwhelming feeling of fear and the need to get to the kitchen and sit at the table.
I felt like I could not get enough oxygen. After no sleep for over a week I went to er on a Sunday (only place in my small town) and found out that I was suffering from congestive heart failure. So I had a reason to feel a lack of oxygen and fear and sitting up helped me feel better.
So I suggest you have yourself checked out just in case your symptoms are something that can be treated.

I had my first when I was in hospital. They removed the cannula from my hand and I swear that the tiny little hole suddenly expanded and became massive. I have never had a hallucination like it. I was breathing normally (I thought) but my hands became claws and I couldn't move my fingers. I later found out that this is because of the carbon dioxide in your bloodstream due to breathing shallowly. Because my breathing appeared normal, the Dr didn't realise what was going on and it took this happening a few times for someone to tell me it was a panic attack.
My migraines are triggered by light, and if there is a certain 'glare' or light shining in my eyes. My DH says he can tell when I have a migraine because I smell a certain way, but I can't distinguish it myself.
These days my panic attacks are fewer and further between, usually caused by my anxiety and often when I lose something (like my car keys in the supermarket). I try and take them as a sign to slow down.

My heart races or my chest tightens. A feeling of being overwhelmed. In the past I think I've felt lightheaded. There was something that made me feel like "I'm either having a panic attack or a heart attack."

Tightness in my chest and difficulty breathing. My internal dialogue alternates between 'calm the fuck down' and 'no, no, NO, NO, NO!’

My lips start to tingle and my throat squeezes shut. I get an overwhelming desire to go outside cos I just know I will be better if I can breath fresh air.

I feel like someone has a wide belt around my rib cage and is squeezing it closed as hard as they can. Then I can only take smaller breathes, can't get lungs full of air.

When I have a panic attack I am usually crying and freaking out. I then shut down and don't talk and or listen to people. My heart rate soars to a not healthy number. I have a hard time catching my breath.
I usually have to listen to music to pull myself out of a panic attack. I don't usually have any warnings. They usually hit fast and hard. But I have to be in a pretty stressful situation before I get them.
I used to get them often and I used to have signs like itchiness, nervousness, heavier than normal breathing and then I would run as fast as I could to get out of the situation. but I have learned how to work through them like they aren't panic attacks.
I used to get them standing in line at a check out stand at any store. and Banks. for many many years I couldn't walk into a bank. I would have panic attacks every time. and I would count in my head the seconds that it took me to get business done and get out.

I've only had two...both while driving in snow storms. I got hot, sweaty and thought I was going to puke.

I only get them when I am in a very scary (to me) situation. Getting onto an airplane was impossible. Long tunnels, yikes There is no air and I am extremely claustrophobic at that point. Get me outta here !

I get immobilized. I can't move forward or leave. I just stand there in fear.
My son has an overwhelming need to get away. He has superflight syndrome (my own description).

It is interesting to read all of the different symptoms. Mine only last for about a minute but in that minute life really sucks for me.

I shake uncontrollably--usually in my legs. I clench my jaw very tightly together. I have to be careful in the winter, because if I shiver, my body will sometimes think it's panic attack time, because it feels very similar, and then want to go into one. It's actually been quite awhile since I've had one, but occasionally they would just start out of the blue, for no reason and once I woke up from a sleep with one.

When I first started getting them, I used to confuse them with the start of an asthma attack because they always made me feel like I just couldn't breathe. My heart would pound, I would feel nauseous, and I always felt like I was shaking terribly all over, but if I held my hand out in front of me to check, it never was actually trembling. And when they were at their worst, I would think that something was desperately wrong with me and that I was in real medical danger.

When I used to get them, I felt an overwhelming urge to run away, from myself I guess. And a feeling of being unable to breathe and a sense that I wanted to save myself, but unable to.

My adrenaline kicks in - fight or flight response. My heart races, and my mind races. In my head I am sure that I am dying or having a stroke. That makes the symptoms worse, and the cycle can only be broken when I take my medication. Thankfully, it only happens a few times per year. I'm not even sure what my trigger is.

It's actually been quite awhile since I've had one, but occasionally they would just start out of the blue, for no reason and once I woke up from a sleep with one. Me too! I have found that in the days before I get one, things feel like they aren't "lined up" properly. Like they're just a bit off. It's weird. Then when it hits, I start shaking, heart races, nausea, diarrhea. If I throw up, it's over. If I fight it, it will go on and on. I have found that I need to just ride them out by counting objects, looking for things for each letter of the alphabet, anything to sidetrack my brain. I used to have Xanax to take as needed for them but Xanax and pregnancy and nursing are not a good combination so it's been 6 years this month since I've taken any. I miscarried in June 2010 and I think it was because I had been taking it. So, when I'm finished nursing my current little, I will be filling a new prescription for it. I hate them! DH says that I have a certain smell when I'm having one. I can't smell it. He can't describe it but says he can smell it on my breath before the panic ever sets in. My DH jokes that we saved money by not buying a vibrating bed since I shake so badly when I get one! Lol.

I get cold and uncontrollable shivering. My chest tightens up and I experience nausea and/or diarrhea. My mind races like crazy. Like others I will sometimes feel a bit off beforehand. To treat it I find deep breathing, meditation (mental imagery of a 'safe place'), relaxation exercises and if necessary an adivan work well. Deep breathing is hard to do when having an anxiety attack but it makes a big difference.

seaexplore, that's what I do as well--like try and think of all the words that start with "A", etc. If I can concentrate on something, I can--most of the time--stop or at least slow them down.
